General :: External Wireless - Installing Drivers For Mint
Aug 9, 2010
I have a DWA-130C (external wireless) and am trying to install the drivers for us in Linux Mint, I'm assuming this is done with ndiswrapper, but I have no idea what I'm doing. I am a begginer to Linux though I know the basics of using the console, packages and such.

I have recently installed Linux Mint 10 on my laptop. When I look at the Device Manager in Windows 7, it says I have an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter. Right now, I am unable to connect to wifi with Linux. What drivers am I able to install, and how would I install them?

I am using a thinkpad R61 and wireless is okay a livecd. Installed ubuntu 8.10 onto a 8Gb thumbdrive and the wireless is still working perfectly. Hoping to make this thumbdrive be truely portable to any laptop, I started download more wireless drivers (e.g. for rt2570, rt73, broadcom, atheros drivers etc) After installing all those wireless drivers, rebooted and noticed that ubuntu does not activate my wireless at all. (the wireless led on my thinkpad does not light up).

I recently downloaded Ubuntu, with Windows Vista dual booting. I am fed up because Ubuntu won't work with my Broadcom BCM4312 Network Connector. I have decided that I am going to install Linux Mint inplace of Ubuntu. The only thing I am worried about is: Will Mint give me the option of which partiton to put it on? I know this sounds stupid, but I am being very cautious about not deleting my files and Vista.

I cannot get my Sabrent USB wireless adapter to work, please help me as I am a beginner in Linux! In their readme, they have two methods:
1.) Compiling a driver from the source code, but they do not give any instructions and I am lost on how to do that.
2.) Copying the firmware files directly to the lib/firmware folders. I did that but when I ran sudo ./wlan0up and sudo .wlan0down, but everything I do results in a "Could not get interface for wlan0"

I just installed Ubuntu on my Macbook Pro today, and I'm trying to install the drivers.
I ran the command "sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name" and I got "Macbook 6,2"
On [url] it only lists up to Macbook 6,1 so I just went with that.
I'm trying to install the "Brodcom STA wireless driver" However, when I authenticate it and begin the installation, it says: "Sorry, the installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jokey.log"

I have recently installed linux mint 10 Julia on my wife's Dell. I installed off CD from linux freedom website with the ftp download. My wife wanted her own account so I went to admin/users and groups and created her account. Or so I thought. When I tried to switch users (with the boot CD in and out of the drive) I got the follwing error:
1) "The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_mintMenu" do you want to delete applet from your configuration?"
2) "The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet" Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?" Both of these had an orange word bubble with an exclamation point in it.
3) "Nautilus could not create the following required folders; :/home?tina?Disktop,/home/tina/.nautilus. Before running Nautilus, please create these folders or set permissions such that Nautilus can create them." This came in a red word bubble with an "x" in it. One last thing. When I installed linux mint 10 on my ancient compac (it has a pent 4 processor and had win 2K on it) all I had to do was plug in a usb wireless card and I was online. My wife's Dell has a wireless card built in and I can't find it in mint 10. How do I set up the wireless. Sorry for the "2 fer" but I'm pressed for time and have to get to work. I'm a copier tech/electrician and I'm good with the hardware but with the software, not so much. I'm sticking with linux no matter what the learning curve because my Mom gave me the compac evo thinking it was useless and I've brought it back to life with linux.

I wished to know if I can install windows 7 on my system when I am already running Linux Mint 10(as the only operating system on my machine). That configuration is called a dual boot. If you install Win7 first (or it is already present), THEN install linux, you will find that grub notices both and you will not need to mess with the MBR. The better solution is to load mint, add VirtualBox, and install Win7 into a virtual machine. Then you get to run Linux and Windows AT THE SAME TIME!

I installed Nvidia drivers according to the post in HowTos section. It downloaded a different version of the existing kernel, i guess. And the kernel using which I downloaded, when shows up GUI, looks like a Safe Mode of Windows. So I boot the kernel that it downloaded. And there the problem is that in Network Manager applet, it doesn't show me the wireless connections. It doesn't even show the Enable Wireless checkbox upon right clicking it. How to get it back?

I have Fedora11 running in my machine and it has no LAN port (RJ-45). I have a wireless PCMCIA card. The model of the wireless card is NL-2511CD EXT2(ETSI).When I insert that card to the PCMCIA slot a window pops up and ask for a WEP key. My wireless router is configured with WPA but above pop-up has no WPA option. I suspect my fedora installation does not have the necessary driver for my wireless card.I want to install that driver. I can transfer that file to the machine via thumb drive since it has no network connection yet. How do I install this? Please refer below images as I'm still a newbie at linux.

I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix for my new laptop. I've tried at great length to install the correct drivers to get my wireless up and running. I'm currently trying to install the Broadcom driver for my 802.11g wireless card. I have downloaded the headers and tools for ubuntu and am proceeding with the instructions given on [URL].
But when I get to these steps I come unstuck
# mkdir hybrid_wl
# cd hybrid_wl
# tar xzf <path>/hybrid-portsrc.tar
I can make the directory and open it but when it comes to the third step I get a message saying that there is no such file or directory.

Can I use Mint as a Router service, similar to the service in Ubuntu (called: Router Advertisement Daemon?). Does Mint support this and what solutions are available for this?
Have dabbled in Linux very briefly, but almost no experience on how to install or find programs, so please explain in detail!
EDIT: I'm looking for something easy and simple, like what Virtual Router or Connectify does for Windows 7...

I have a pretty decent DSL connection that usually gave me about 105KB/second download speed over wifi. The "official" download speed was 1.5 megabits so I should have been getting a bit more, but that's not my question.
I recently switched to Mint from Ubuntu. Now my download speed is significantly slower, to the tune of 45 KB/second. Since the connection runs at normal speed when I connect via an ethernet cable, my guess is that mint doesn't give enough power to the wifi card. Is there any way I can fix that?

I have a Realtek WN511b wireless card with a BM4321 chip.
It runs on the wl driver but when I boot the system the card won't install.
With help (I am noob) we have figured out that the ssb and the b43 drivers are installing even though I have them blacklisted. I have seen similar problems described elsewhere but no real fixes.
I can boot the system (Dell d630) then pop the card out and re-insert, enter password and it connects no problem.
It would be nice if it simply installed on boot.
Wondering if anyone had a solution?
