Debian :: Install Dbus - Missing /etc/rc0.d ?
Aug 25, 2010
Debian and running Lenny on a server. I'm trying to install dbus and get an error:
So it seems I'm missing the /etc/rc0.d directory. I checked and all the other rc directories are there, from rc1.d to rc6.d, rc.local and rcS.d.
I don't know how deep these things go and I don't know why I'm missing the rc0.d. Can I just create the directory myself and that's it? It doesn't break anything somewhere else if I make it up myself? Or do I need to do something else to get this working?

I'm using handbrake to encode some dvd's and am trying to use the autoshutdown feature. It does not work.However, handbrake does not seem at fault here. When I check in qdbusviewer, there is indeed no shutdown method in the org.freedesktop.PowerManagement interface. This does not seem normal, although I have the same problem on 2 suse 11.3 boxes.Through this post, I started fiddling with policykit settings, but it doesn't change anything.Does anyone know a solution to this problem? Do you have these canShutdown/shutdown methods?

I cannot boot my 9.10 system as of this morning. I see these messages:
insserv: warning: script 'dbus' missing LSB tags and overrides
insserv: warning: script 'gdm' missing LSB tags and overrides
insserv: warning: script 'K20acpi-support' missing LSB tags and overrides
insserv: warning: script 's99webmin' missing LSB tags and overrides
/sbin/insserv failed, exit code 1
I then hear 2 or 3 faint clicks and I get a blank screen, with 2 faint lines at the top. I have been searching and trying to figure this out, but to no avail.

DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus). The weird thing: after looking in var/log/messages it appears that it is trying to be used by NetworkManager. And when I lookin NM, i can see iPhone as an ethernet device (cable unplugged).

I use Debian Squeeze with Banshee 1.6.1 and I'm having a problem with some commands in Banshee via terminal:
$ banshee --play
$ banshee --stop
$ banshee --next
$ banshee --previous
Instead of changing the playback, these commands open a new Banshee window, and then I get 2 banshee processes running. I tried to get some help in Banshee's forum, and they said it's a problem with Dbus, more specifically, the variable DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS is not set. If I run the following command, I get an empty line:
login@host:~$ echo $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
login@host:~$
I searched in google and I found some solutions that worked for other distros, but in Debian they are not working.

I'm not sure what when wrong since I have a few DVDs and they all play well in my normal DVD player, I later attempt to mount it in my Ubuntu 8.10 I'm presented with the following message:
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
May I know what does this really mean?Is there something in my computer that require a fix?

I had my laptop turned on. The battery turned out low and my pc shut down (not in the correct way obviously)! Plus: I was running apt-get upgrade but it should have done before shutting down. Now, I restarted my pc and under nm-applet I see: "wireless network: device not ready" and at login I get the message: "Network configurations failed. org.freedesktop.dbus.error.spawn.PermissionsInvalid: the permission of the setuid helper is not correct" and that I could not be able to connect via bluetooth (but actuallyu I can't use wireless!)! What to do guys? I use debian squeeze. I read from someone using kubuntu that he solved the problem reinstalling all the packages with "dbus" in their name. But I don't know if my ethernet will work yet!
Update: if I run dpkg-reconfigure dbus, it tells me that dbus package is corrupted or not complete: could be the issue?

I'm attempting to install Debian (Stable) from a business net install disc. The problem? I can't load/install the packages I need to connect to my USB 3G modem. When I load up a shell (tty2?), I'm brought to an 'ash' prompt, and there's no DPKG for me to load the necessary packages.
how I can do a total net install, including the base, from an USB 3G modem? Actually, I'm very surprised that current Linux distros don't seem to include support, for this growing market share type of internet connection.

What the heck do I do now? 2 times I've re-installed suse 11.2 and this is what I get every time it tries the first update. I just had a perfectly fine working version of 11.2 that was installed using the network install just 3 days ago but I messed up and couldn't access mySql. Today I blew it away thinking I'd just start over and now it doesn't work. I installed it exactly the same as 2 days ago, whats changed? How do I fix this? I can't access the software repository settings in yast, nothing happens when I try to start it.

I have a laptop with 2 HDDs, 1x SSD (/dev/sda, Windows 10 Pro x64) and 1x HDD (/dev/sdb, 3 primary partitions: boot, root, swap; 1 logical partition: home).I used the Debian Stretch Alpha D1 Netinstall ISO x64 by transfering it to a USB stick with DiskImage Writer.The installation went perfectly fine. I chose GRUB to be installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb, as I want all my Linux Stuff on that second disk. The plan is to boot the second disk manually through the BIOS whenever I want to work with Debian. My Windows disk is kept unaware of anything "linuxy".
After the install was complete and I booted my /dev/sdb through the BIOS, a blinking cursor on a black screen was the result. And I don't mean a GRUB Rescue prompt.IMHO, Grub appears to not have been installed, although I chose it to be installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb at the end of the installation.
I've been reading a little, searching for a bug in the installer, but I found only a vague mentioning of such an issue: Grub missing if Debian installed on a multi-hdd system through USB stick. The solution was to get Super Grub2 Disk, and use it to boot my Debian. It worked as expected and the system booted.

Trying to install an XP Pro virtual machine as a guest in VMware Workstation 7.1.2, fails with the error: "Could not open /dev/vmmon. No such file or directory. Please make sure that the kernel module 'vmmon' is loaded".Host OS is Debian-Lenny. Was able to specify the new virtual machine configuration, but VMware failed to create the new image (because of the error specified in previous paragraph).
Is the problem that Debian is not loading/executing a needed process? Should I be directing this problem to either Debian or VMware? I searched the VMware documentation, and it mentioned something about chkconfig (Redhat), or the rcconf/ksysv utilities to change SUSE configuration levels. I am unfamiliar with the syntax, don't know why this is necessary.

I want to try Debian on my Asus Eee netbook and I'm trying to follow the instructions in URL... But just copying the ISO file to the USB drive then trying to boot from it doesn't seem to work. I just get "Missing operating system".
The Eee can use an external optical drive as well but that failed also. I'm sure I need to do more to prepare the USB drive or CD? Can I prepare the USB Drive or CD on my Windows system, and make it boot on the netbook (which has another Linux distro on it now)?

I'm trying to install The Sims 2 (which I'm aware currently does not run properly in wine anyway), using the multi-CD version. The installation goes normally, up until it comes time to switch from disc 1 to disc 2. The installer prompts me to insert disc 2, but it seems that Ubuntu still believes that the installer doesn't want me to open the drive, because, when I try to open it, it doesn't open, and a window pops up with the following message: Unable to eject CD-RW/DVD RW Drive DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending

I want to be able to connect to the dbus session bus on my box from another box. I've done this before on previous linux installs by adding
Code:
<listen>tcp:host=0.0.0.0,all_interfaces=true,port=5550</listen>
in my dbus config file, but today this isn't working. nmap shows that port 5550 is open and the box can connect to this address from itself.
ie.
On the box where dbus-daemon is running (ip address 172.16.0.1):
Code:
dbus-monitor --address tcp:host=0.0.0.0,port=5550
dbus-monitor --address tcp:host=127.0.0.1,port=5550
dbus-monitor --address tcp:host=172.16.0.1,port=5550

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but here goes anyway.
System:
ASUS Pro50n Laptop
Distro: Arch Linux
WM/DE: Gnome
I've recently installed Arch linux with the gnome desktop environment, and everything is working fine apart from HAL and DBUS. I'm not sure why this problem is happening and I have no idea about any settings for HAL and DBUS all I know is what it says in the wiki.
The problem I have is that HAL and DBUS fail to start. I have tried /etc/rc.d/hal start and get the message BUSY.. then FAIL. I have tried /etc/rc.d/dbus start and get exactly the same. I have tried restart and that also fails. *EDIT* I have just tried /etc/rc.d/dbus start again without changing a thing and dbus has started successfully but HAL still fails.
The further problem, which I think is related to HAL not starting... possibly... Is that I can't watch DVD's / anything in the DVD drive. I can see it in Places >Computer as "CD/DVD Drive: 3_MEN_IN_ANOTHER_BOAT" but when I click to load it or if I open Totem and try and load it all I get is the error: Unable to mount location: Not Authorized. Is this related to HAL or is this a completely different issue?
*EDIT* fixed the HAL problem, reinstalled xf86-input-evdev package and it seemed to fix the problem. However I am still having a problem with watching DVD's

I am running 64-bit current. I have not identified which update started the Dolphin crashes, but it recently has been happening very often, usually within a few seconds of starting it, but not always.
Googling suggested that it might be a dbus issue, so I rolled my own package using dbus-1.4.0 and the slackbuild from the 64 bit current source.
Dolphin has been rock solid since. I noticed that there was an 'allow root globally' patch which I commented out. I am guessing that this may affect applications that I have not used yet or the issue has been fixed in version 1.4.
I have not seen any evidence that other current users have had this problem, but maybe Robby would consider an upgrade?
