I then hear 2 or 3 faint clicks and I get a blank screen, with 2 faint lines at the top. I have been searching and trying to figure this out, but to no avail.

Debian and running Lenny on a server. I'm trying to install dbus and get an error:
So it seems I'm missing the /etc/rc0.d directory. I checked and all the other rc directories are there, from rc1.d to rc6.d, rc.local and rcS.d.
I don't know how deep these things go and I don't know why I'm missing the rc0.d. Can I just create the directory myself and that's it? It doesn't break anything somewhere else if I make it up myself? Or do I need to do something else to get this working?
I am trying to find the ip address on my Red Hat Linux box, but there is no ipconfig file in my /sbin/ directory. I did a 'locate ipconfig' in the terminal and the only files I got were plipconfig, sipconfig.py/c/o, plipconfig.8.gz, ipconfig.h. I dont know what happened to my ipconfig file. Where I can get a new copy of it?
I am running KDE from the unstable repos and am having an issue with the Amarok included... output of rpm query on amarok
Code:
When I import my music folder into my amarok library I come up ~3000 songs short. When I load the same music folder into songbird 1.4 I am able to see the full library.
There appears to be no rhyme or reason to which songs' ID3 tags are not being read properly by Amarok and therefore are not appearing in my collection. I have tried removing my collection and rescanning, removing and re-installing amarok.. removing all amarok related folders from my .kde folders and reinstalling... yet I am still unable to get my full collection read by Amarok..
I'm using handbrake to encode some dvd's and am trying to use the autoshutdown feature. It does not work. However, handbrake does not seem at fault here. When I check in qdbusviewer, there is indeed no shutdown method in the org.freedesktop.PowerManagement interface. This does not seem normal, although I have the same problem on 2 suse 11.3 boxes.Through this post, I started fiddling with policykit settings, but it doesn't change anything.Does anyone know a solution to this problem? Do you have these canShutdown/shutdown methods?
I have a lot of avis with annoying metadata that show in vlc. Since I cannot figure out how to configure vlc in a way that it won't show the tags, ffmpeg should strip the tags. This is supposed to do the trick:
The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)
do have installed glib and dbus and can find them manually , /usr/include/glib-2.0/glib.h , but while comipling applicaiton it gives following error messages.
/usr/include/libosso.h:32:18: error: glib.h: No such file or directory /usr/include/libosso.h:38:23: error: dbus/dbus.h: No such file or directory /usr/include/libosso.h:39:32: error: dbus/dbus-protocol.h: No such file or directory
I installed ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition on my 4gb usb with universal usb installer, and when i select my usb drive from the f12 boot options, i get the Missing Operating System message.
I have a Lenovo X60 with Intel Centrino Duo Core @ 1.83GHz 1.83GHz, and 0.99 GB of RAM. I am running a dual boot with Windows XP SP3 and the latest version of Ubuntu desktop. My problem is that after I ran the Defrag my C: drive in Windows, I can into my ubuntu.I was greeted with the following error message when i tried to boot into ubuntu {Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init}
I am still probably of the windows mindset when it comes to security. I ran rootkit this morning and received the following error messages;
[09:43:49] /usr/sbin/unhide [ Warning ] [09:43:49] Warning: The file '/usr/sbin/unhide' exists on the system, but it is not present in the rkhunter.dat file. 09:43:49] /usr/sbin/unhide-linux26 [ Warning ]
After trying most of the solutions I could think of, including reinstalling and upgrading, I'm posting here hoping someone would take me out of this misery now.Laptop:thinkpad t500I was running Ubuntu 10.04 and it froze. I rebooted and it shows the following message and gives me the "initramfs" prompt:Quote:
BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 00f44000 ... ...
i have installed ubuntu in my laptop, heres wat i didformat the drive and set 80g for /, 237gig for /home and 3gig for swapi have successfully installed it, i immediately look for updates and installed it.the update was successful, i restarted it then i installed nvidia driver.. and other applications i need like netbeans, mysql, cheese, sun jre and jdk..after those installations i have restarted my laptop but it wont boot my ubuntu and displays this message
Code: Mount of File System Failed. A maintenance shell will now be started.
I've been stupid, and used kleansweep, which deleted a load of files and in the process killed everything. When I boot I get "file system check failed". Then it gives me a command prompt. I really don't want to have to reinstall ubuntu as I have a lot of stuff installed on it.
When I install a commercial audio into the CDROM drive I get th following: Unable to mount Audio Disc DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Mountpoint Already registered
I am running Lucid Lynx 10.04.3. Sometimes when I boot the computer, my desktop icons are not there. I ended up looking for a solution, and found one:
1. Hit Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor
2. Go to apps/nautilus/preferences and check 'show_desktop'
However, show desktop was already checked. If I unchecked it, and then checked it again, the desktop icons appeared. Weird, but problem solved right? Wrong.
Sometimes when I boot, the desktop icons are gone again. This doesn't happen at every single boot though. When they are gone again though, I just have to go through the process again. Here's where it gets worse.
Also, sometimes at boot, both the top and bottom taskbars/system trays are completely gone, leaving just the desktop. Once again, this doesn't happen at every single boot. I can't really do anything, so I just reboot again and more often then not, things are back to normal. Or the trays are back, but the desktop icons are gone again.
The weird thing about this is it doesn't happen every time I boot the computer. So if there is a problem I just restart and things are usually fine again. However this is very frustrating, and NOT normal.
Also, because the default drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce MX4000 were not sufficient, I had to remove the Nouveau drivers and install nvidia-glx-96, which corresponds to the official NVIDIA Linux driver version 96.43.17. This is the latest driver version listed for my card on the NVIDIA website. I also had to downgrade from 11.04 because apparently the old drivers are not compatible with the new X Server version in 11.04. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not. I'm wondering if maybe i should just get a newer card so I don't have to deal with the older drivers.
Should I have hal and/or dbus services running when my system doesn't have GUI? For example, in case of a mail/web server where I have console applications only on it.
I have a Mac Mini with OS X that I had dual booted successfully with Windows XP for my family. I am a rookie at all this but learned a lot Googling sites that walked me through things. I got bold and tried to triple boot the Mac Mini with Ubuntu 10.04 using rEfIt. I was following this website. [URL].
MISTAKE #1 All was done to the letter until I accidentally realized I had clicked install on step 8 before I clicked "Advanced" to check off the "Install Boot Loader" and changing the device to the partition I had made for Ubuntu (/dev/sda3/). It finished installing and rebooted with the rEFIt screen with Mac / Ubuntu /Windows icons. Mac started, but both Windows and Ubuntu showed a black screen with blinking underscore in the top left of the screen. I went back to the Mac OS and in Disk Utility I noticed that the Linux-Ubuntu name on the partition I had made changed to "DiskOS3".
Mistake #2 I panicked and used "Erase" in Disk Utility on that partition using the Zero Out Data security Erase option.
Mistake #3 Then I reinstalled the Ubuntu 10.04 cd into the drive and did the install boot loader steps. It started up but the rEFIt screen now has Mac/ two Ubuntu penguins/ and Windows icons. Mac starts and works, but both ubuntu icons and Windows leads to the black screen with blincking underscore cursor.

I boot ubuntu-live from a usb flash drive, but i can't mount the partition where i have installed ubuntu /dev/sda6. Either run fsck command. this error appears.... Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?
Click here for solution... http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...99&postcount=3So I just realized how stupid I was being trying to run these commands for a NTFS partition... so I searched and used Gparted to check sda2, and also ran
Code: root@ubuntu:/home/ubuntu# sudo ntfsfix /dev/sda2 Mounting volume... OK
I have been using g4l to do cold backups of my OS partitions for a LONG time. I finally decided to configure a boot USB flash drive instead of a CD for this purpose. Using the EXCELLENT instructions on this page [URL] I configured a Lexar 1 GB Firefly drive and have used it for some time. When a newer version of g4l came out I decided to build another boot flash drive using a Verbatim 1GB drive. I followed the same instructions and...
The Verbatim flash drive will boot my Dell Studio XPS and my Dell Latitude 2100 netbook. It will NOT boot either of my Dell Dimension 4600s. The Dimension 4600s respond with a message "Missing operating system" when I try to boot from the Verbatim drive. The Firefly works on all machines and I configured Kingston 1GB and 2GB Data Travelers which also work on all machines.
i used to use ubuntu 9.04 on my lap compaq 515, it worked well. But on upgrading to the higher versions(9.10, 10.04) the system failed to boot. Whenever i tried to install, the laptop would freeze and just show a blank screen. The Configuration of my system is below
when I connect my iphone (3GS, 4.3.3) to Fedora 15 it gives me this error: Unable to mount iphone DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus). The weird thing: after looking in var/log/messages it appears that it is trying to be used by NetworkManager. And when I lookin NM, i can see iPhone as an ethernet device (cable unplugged).
I have a problem when booting my pc.I uninstaled bootchart and since then kernel goes to panic..saying /sbin/boot:no such file or directory..I followed the Repair Installed System from my dvd but it fails at the end and it just reboots the system..Is there any way to baypass this problem without reinstalling the OS?
