Debian :: Get Flash To Work On Lenny?
Jan 24, 2011
Just installed Lenny. As usual flash doesn't work. Anybody can point me to a stepwise solution how to get flash to work on Lenny? I tried everything I could google, no go. Cpu is intel 32bit and flash worked fine with previous older Debian version, so it must be Lenny-specific.

I have read tons of articles on how but none work. I have edited the source.list file with what they say and I have used all the terminal commands that are becoming very repetitive.

I have tried these approaches (atleast these two) as mentioned in the following
url
url
I have used other approaches as and when I found them and have used them in a haphazard manner. I am currently not sure about all that I have done.
I can see some flash videos ( presently only some on .....) while I cant see many others. I would want to configure flash so that I can enjoy the videos.
Here is some details about my system

Well being a newbie I have discovered something (or so I think!) regarding abode's flash plugin (flashplugin-nonfree): As per instructions from this same forum I had installed and used successfully in my Lenny 64, ever since it came out, abode's flash by first adding in my /etc/apt/sources.list the following repository: deb [URL]. Lately and for quite some time flash would misbehave and I had to reinstall it continuously and more often until it would work in the end only for some hours.
I reinstalled Lenny believing I could get over it but instead I ended up without any flash working at all! No videos only sound. Next step I deleted etch backports (#) and installed the sid repository: deb [URL] unstable main contrib non-free and went:#apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree which downloaded and installed flash 10 (I had flash 9 through backports) and consequently deleted (#) after that sid's repository to avoid updating Lenny, placing backports again in place although I do not know why ! Now I have videos working.

I've already went through the regular process of installation, adding the backports repository and doing the debian way installation, but somehow the system isn't assuming the plugin.
I've rebooted the web browser and even the entire system, but still the plugin does not work.

I just installed debian lenny. I'm looking forward to getting some work done with it, and I'm learning loads. When I was installing it, the GUI screen showed me three network interfaces, so I chose wlan0, the wireless card, so it did pick it up?
I tried to configure it with the necessary information (I wrote it down on a pad) but it still wouldn't configure, so I said, continue with the install and do it later. When I got to the desktop I added a new network to in network manager and set the ESSID and password, but still nothing. Even a list of other networks don't show up.
So what do I have to do to get this working? Here are the stats:
Atheros Communications Inc. LAN Express AE IEEE 802.11g PCI-E adaptor.

In reply to my last question about Wireless incompatibility in Debian 5.0.3 'Lenny', I found out it was because of missing drivers that I chose to ignore, despite the notifications. Now I've got this problem again, this time with different hardware and a different distribution of Debian (Debian Testing 'Squeeze' i386). As well as asking me to load up ipw2100-1.3.fw (of which I already have), it asks me to load tigon/tg3_tso5.bin. Loading the firmware is no problem. Finding and downloading nthe firmware is the problem here.I've searched through packacges and bug reports for a dowload link, but I've only come across a bundle with the driver I need, as well as a few unneeded extras. IT doesn't work at all.

i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

After using testing (now Wheezy) for almost a year and breaking my machine (latest nvidia broken packages), I went back to vanilla Squeeze (after updates, now at 6.02).Nothing from outside the stable repos; not even the nvidia driver (kept it at default and nouveau)Repo "deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main non-free" enabled. It seems flash is not working with iceweasel; I either have a message which says "Cannot play media: you do not have the correct version of the flash player. Download the correct version," with a link to Adobe's site, of media appears in broken pieces. In order to keep my system "clean," I haven't downloaded anything from Adobe, and a search on this forum suggested installing flashplugin-nonfree or flashplayer-mozilla. Did both (can't have them at the same time), restarted, no joy.
~$ apt-cache policy flashplayer-mozilla
flashplayer-mozilla:
Installed: 2:10.3.181.26-0.1

I enabled java and flash in Iceweasel 3.5.16 via the related/required packages in the repository so flash-nonfree (or whatever it is) and the related java one. I didn't install either flash or java manually so no plugins that way. Flash and java works in Iceweasel. If I wanted to try Swiftfox, what do I do? I have it installed but both flash and java don't work.
I assume that one has to do the manual installs for both so go to both Flash and Java official sites and install the related Linux package. Will this conflict with my Iceweasel-based java/flash packages? Or do they go in separate directories and files? I don't want a conflict or interference and thus, don't want to break what's working.

I have worked with it for some weeks when I installed it over the summer on my PowerPC. I am now trying to decide whether Debian (vs. Ubuntu) is the right OS for my brand new Toshiba Intel Core i3 with 3 GB of RAM.
1. Flash -- it is true that Debian doesn't support flash on the web? It certianly did not support flash on my PowerPC. I would appreciate if someone can give me a straight answer on this.
2. Languages -- can I simultaneously work with two or three different languages on Debian? I frequently have to type in several languages (e.g., English, French, Persian, Turkish). I am writing a dissertation, so this is very important to me.
3. Finally where can I read a little about comparison between Debian and Ubuntu? My understanding is that Debian is faster than Ubuntu and generally better. Ubuntu is after all based on Debian which means that it's secondary in stability, features, speed, etc. to Debian. Is this generalization correct? Or am I completely off the wall?

I have the latest version of Debian Lenny AMD64 installed on my brother's computer. I am trying to get Adobe versions of flash to install on his computer. It seems no matter what I do I get the freeware version installed which unfortunately is not up to the task. If I try to remove the freeware version the package manager tells me it needs to remove the gnome as well. How can I keep the gnome and at the same time get Adobe version to install. Yes I have a multimedia repository installed and I tried reinstalling Mozilla Adobe package with no success.
Searching forums did not result in any helpful ideas.Things I have already found out from reading this forum.-I have to purge all freeware version of the Adobe flash plug-in. I can't seem to find a way to do this without removing the gnome desktop. It seems that the plug-in is a dependency for the gnome desktop environment. Yes I want to continue to use the gnome desktop environment. I have to install flashplayer-mozilla package from the Debian multimedia nonfree repository. That I can successfully do, and have done so without success. It installs successfully, but it still shows version 9 of the plug-in. I believe version 9 is the free version. What I would like to use the free version, it's just not compatible with the websites I go to.

I recently switched from Windows XP to stable Debian w/KDE on my work dell B120 laptop. I have been trying to diagnose freezes. In the evenings I have been leaving an SSH connection to my home computer. I leave a command running that writes the current time to a file every ten minutes. The past two nights it has stopped writing the time after a couple hours (not at the exact same time), and I am no longer able to ssh from my home computer to my work computer.
When I get back to work, the work laptop is frozen. CTRL+Alt+Backspace does not help, neither does CTRL+ALT+F1. Ctrl+Alt+SysRq works sometimes. It has not yet frozen while I have been present.
I tried disabling the screen saver and monitor power controls in KDE, thinking that those only come on when I am away, so they might be the cause. But it did not help.
I took the last time recorded by my ssh connection and looked through the logs trying to find something that happened at that time, but the only event occuring around the time the SSH connection dropped was a chron job that runs every hour. As far as I can tell, the chron job does not actually do anything but write to the log each hour.
So obviously I need to post more information. What would be helpful? Which log or configuration files might contain clues?
I see these lines in my logs:
kernel: Kernel logging (proc) stopped.
imklog 3.18.6, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
It appears at 6:25 AM each day between when the SSH connection drops and when I arrive in the morning. Do I need to restart logging?
