Debian :: Cannot Get Wireless To Work After Lenny Reinstall
Feb 2, 2010
After running wireless for years my system crashed, I've had to re install lenny and now what ever I try I can't get the wireless to work. I'm running Lenny, kernel 2.6.26-2-686 but when I start up it doesn't seem to be able to start the wireless, whatever I do from gnome wireless tools,
I just installed debian lenny. I'm looking forward to getting some work done with it, and I'm learning loads. When I was installing it, the GUI screen showed me three network interfaces, so I chose wlan0, the wireless card, so it did pick it up?
I tried to configure it with the necessary information (I wrote it down on a pad) but it still wouldn't configure, so I said, continue with the install and do it later. When I got to the desktop I added a new network to in network manager and set the ESSID and password, but still nothing. Even a list of other networks don't show up.
So what do I have to do to get this working? Here are the stats:
Atheros Communications Inc. LAN Express AE IEEE 802.11g PCI-E adaptor.
I've been trying for a couple of days now to get the Huawei E1750 to work but have had no luck so far. I've installed the packages usb-modeswitch-1.1.4 and usb-modeswitch-data and have edited the usb-modeswitch.conf to include the following:
I managed to break my video4linux module rendering all my video devices useless, can anyone tell me how to reinstall it as per the the one on Lenny. I'm looking for the original one and not v4l2.
2.6.26-2-686 I have a presentation to do tonight and need it working for that.

I recently reinstalled Lenny and I am attempting to save my /home directory. I used the graphical install and when it came to the part about partitioning, I created a new /home partition "hdb1" and told the installer to ignore my old /home partition "/dev/hda9".Following the completion of the install, I logged in and changed my /etc/fstab so that /home --> my old /home partition "/dev/hda9". I then mounted the old partition to /home and rebooted the system. Now, when I go to my /home directory >> properties, I can see that the files I had are on the drive (2GB are used) --- but --- I cannot actually see the files??
I dual boot with windows xp and ubuntu 9.10. When using windows my wireless works fine but when using ubuntu my wireless does not work. The first time ubuntu was loaded the wireless was working and then while I was trying to figure out how to load a program I messed up a grub file. As I couldn't fix it I just reinstalled Ubuntu and since then my wireless is inoperable in Ubuntu only.
Just installed Lenny. As usual flash doesn't work. Anybody can point me to a stepwise solution how to get flash to work on Lenny? I tried everything I could google, no go. Cpu is intel 32bit and flash worked fine with previous older Debian version, so it must be Lenny-specific.
How do I enable suspend in Lenny currently I can shut down or hibernate. In ubuntu on a different computer I can suspend which resumes very quickly can this work on Lenny also it does not hibernate properly anyway, there are error messages.
I'm new here, I hope someone can help me get wireless working on my laptop. This is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C650-EZ1533 (Intel Core i3). The Toshiba site says it has "Atheros Wireless networking (802.11b/g/n)", but does not identify the hardware more specifically.
I installed Debian 6.0 from a netinstall disc, the version including nonfree hardware drivers. In the software selection I went with the defaults: only "Desktop environment", "Laptop" and "Basic system".
Now the GUI looks nice and behaves OK, and the audio, video, ethernet, and optical drive are working. However, I don't know how to configure wireless. It's probably my fault. I was installing and uninstalling file managers, trying to find one I would like better than Nautilus. When I went to uninstall one of them, a message in the package manager recommended using a command like "auto remove" or similar (I did not record it exactly). My understanding at the time was that this would only remove things that were installed because of dependencies but were no longer needed. However, *a lot* of things disappeard from the menus.
Now the only thing about networking in the menus is something about setting up a proxy. There should be some sort of network manager, right? Or an icon on the taskbar, maybe? But I don't know what package to install.
I have been Linux user(Ubuntu)for about 3 years since my switching from Windows. Although I did not have any complain against it, I wanted to try Debian Lenny. I have already partitioned my disk and installed Debian. Everything worked fine according to my expectations except for one thing: wireless.I tried different things to get it works without result. The light indicator of my computer seems to be working but the Network Manager does not detect any signal. In Ubuntu the wireless is detected automatically even using the Live CD.
I use Debian Stretch and I've installed it twice with the same ISO on the same laptop. First just to test a few things, then freshly installed it again.
The first time the wireless card was named wlan0 (as always for me, I've never had another name), the second time though it was suddenly named wlp3s0.
How did this occur and may I change it back to wlan0?
I'm running Debian Lenny. I want to get a wireless card working. Spent ages trying to get my betgear WG111T wireless dongle to work with ndiswrapper with no luck so I'm going to fork out for a wireless card. I've googled extensively but haven't really found a satisfactory answer. Is there a wireless card/chipset that I can count on working fairly easily or even better out of the box with Lenny?
I have a dual boot system. I need dual boot as my dictation software is only available for Windows. In the future I am going to try a virtual machine, but dictation and audio did not work properly the last time I tried in VM. But unfortunately for now I have a dual boot machine with Vista and Debian 6. Unfortunately, I am going to have to reinstall Vista. Or to be more accurate I'm going to install the 64-bit version instead of the 32 bit that came with the computer. I have the 64-bit version that I no longer use from one of my other computers.
Anyway, I have to install Windows which will overwrite my grub2. Is there anyway I can make a backup or reinstall grub2 after I install Windows. I really don't want to reinstall Debian 6 squeeze. Can they make some sort of a backup of gurb2 before I do this. I checked out the Internet and I found something called Super Grub2. It apparently will allow me to boot back into Debain 6 so that I can install grub2 again. Assuming, Super Grub2 even works then how do I reinstall grub2 once a boot into Debian 6? Has anybody tried Super grub2, does it work? It's kind of hard to test it, with a working version of grub2.
In reply to my last question about Wireless incompatibility in Debian 5.0.3 'Lenny', I found out it was because of missing drivers that I chose to ignore, despite the notifications. Now I've got this problem again, this time with different hardware and a different distribution of Debian (Debian Testing 'Squeeze' i386). As well as asking me to load up ipw2100-1.3.fw (of which I already have), it asks me to load tigon/tg3_tso5.bin. Loading the firmware is no problem. Finding and downloading nthe firmware is the problem here.I've searched through packacges and bug reports for a dowload link, but I've only come across a bundle with the driver I need, as well as a few unneeded extras. IT doesn't work at all.
I bought a brothers printer yersterday. And it doesn't work on Debian Lenny. I've tried to install this drivers : dcp195clpr et dcp195ccupswrapper with dpkg command but nothing work. When I try to print nothing happen. But in CUPS, there a printer call dcp-195c.
I recently bought a new Acer Aspire and installed Lenny, I can get a wired network/internet connection however not a wireless connection. I use wicd. Bluetooth doesn't work either though I suspect that it might be the same issue.
Don't know if it helps however when I tpye iwconfig I get: ladb:/home/nigel# iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions.
I have not been able to get my Epson Perfection V100 scanner to work with Lenny. The correct driver files have been downloaded from Avasys and installed.
i am having trouble setting up my alltel wireless in lenny in ubuntu i used modem-manager and usb-modeswitch. but modem-manager isnt supported in lenny is there any other way to set this device up?
For about the past month I have been having a very frustrating problem When I boot the system with the ethernet cable attached it acts as if the cable is unplugged even though the connection light is litWhen I boot the system with the ethernet cable disconnected and wait until it boots all the way to gnome and then plug in the cable everything works fine
i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).
I am running dnsmasq in debian lenny, wvdial connecting but dnsmasq doesn't work, the /var/run/dnsmasq/resolv.conf file is empty this is /var/log/syslog:
The /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf is ok:
I tried to install wicd so I can connect to my wireless internet, but it gives me the following output:
/usr/share/wicd/gtk/gui.py:458: Warning: Source ID 54 was not found when attempting to remove it gobject.source_remove(self.update_cb) ERROR:dbus.connection:Exception in handler for D-Bus signal: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/dbus/connection.py", line 230, in maybe_handle_message self._handler(*args, **kwargs) File "/usr/share/wicd/gtk/gui.py", line 253, in handle_connection_results error(self.window, language[results], block=False) KeyError: dbus.String(u'bad_pass')
I have checked that the pasword is correct. I had network-manager installed but it has been uninstalled. I am trying to connect to a WPA2PSK router. I might be a firmware problem, since I get a 'message' on the start screen that there are some problems with my firmware, but I can't figure out how to check if it is broken, or how to configure it so it is correct.
I have the qualcomm atheros ar9485 wireless card. As far as I can tell, the driver for that is either ath3k or ath9k, both are installed. The message I get when I start the computer is: usb 1-1.1: firmware: failed to load ar3k/AthrBT_0x01020200.dfu (-2).
I just installed 64bit Debian Testing (KDE) on my laptop, HP Compaq 8510p; but I can't get wireless to work.Pressing the wireless button above the keyboard does nothing, no blue light. Also, "Enable wireless" in Network Manager is greyed out. Finally I ran rfkill unblock all and rebooted, but that didn't help either.
I'm new to Debian,I download a Squeeze amd64 installation CD and ready to install it. My laptop is Compaq Presario CQ40-115AU,AMD 780G board with ATI Radeon HD3200 graphic card integrated, wifi chip is Broadcom 4312 14e4:4315. Now I don't have network connection in home,I have to install the Squeeze, and get my wifi work to do the further update at any cybercafe with wifi hotspot. I found this website, provide all the package, but I don't know which to download to get my wifi work.
I decided to start of with Debian. I'm having trouble getting my wireless connection to work. I think i need drivers or something, i can't make a wireless connection. And it is a bit difficult for me, as i am new to Linux, and I'm not sure what I'm doing when i am writing these commands.
My wireless card is a Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n
I have been using Raspberry PI a little, so i am familiar with the terminal.
I'm having trouble getting my wireless card (RNX-G300LX, from Rosewill) working with my Debian install. I had it working at one point in time, but (apparently) something has gone wrong, as it no longer connects. The network I'm trying to connect to uses WPA2. When I try to start up my wireless card as follows: # ifup wlan0
I get the following response: wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801 wmaster0: unkown hardware address type 801 Listening on LPF/wlan0/00:1a:... Sending on LPF/wlan0/00:1a:... Sending on Socket/fallback

I have set up /etc/network/interfaces as follows: auto lo iface lo inet loopback iface wlan0 inet dhcp wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf auto wlan0 and /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf looks like this: ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant ctrl_interface_group=0 ap_scan=1 fast_reauth=1 network={ ssid="apt_102" scan_ssid=1 key_mgmt=WPA-PSK psk="mypassword" proto=WPA2 }
I should also note that running wpa_cli -i wlan0 tells me that it is "trying to associate" with my router, but authentication times out each time.
I have an Atheros wireless USB dongle that will connect to my Wifi network just fine in Gnome but in KDE doesn't. I've read through the http://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse and have installed all packages and tried all methods noted there but still can't get the wlan0 to work at all in KDE. Is wireless in KDE & Debian Squeeze useless?
