Debian Configuration :: Swiftfox - Flash And Java Don't Work

Jan 8, 2011

I enabled java and flash in Iceweasel 3.5.16 via the related/required packages in the repository so flash-nonfree (or whatever it is) and the related java one. I didn't install either flash or java manually so no plugins that way. Flash and java works in Iceweasel. If I wanted to try Swiftfox, what do I do? I have it installed but both flash and java don't work.

I assume that one has to do the manual installs for both so go to both Flash and Java official sites and install the related Linux package. Will this conflict with my Iceweasel-based java/flash packages? Or do they go in separate directories and files? I don't want a conflict or interference and thus, don't want to break what's working.

Debian Configuration :: Java Uses High CPU In Jessie

Jun 24, 2015

I have a relative fresh install of jessie in which I face a high cpu usage of java (top shows about 165% CPU and 12% MEM). The problem occurs right after booting the computer. These values stay constantly high for days if I leave the box running. This happens even if the computer is just sitting there without doing anything.

I have to kill java to go back to normal. So, when I do a
Code: Select allkillall -KILL java
the problem goes away. After that it doesn't reappear and I can use all apps installed without a problem.

Currently I am based on openjdk
Code: Select allupdate-alternatives --display java
java - auto mode
  link currently points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java - priority 1071
  slave java.1.gz: /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/man/man1/java.1.gz
Current 'best' version is '/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java'.

But I have also tried the SUN version with the same result.

Where to look to find more information on what exactly java app is using so much resources and how I can solve it? I guess I could just put somewhere in rc.d a kill java command and forget about it but I would really like to find out whats going on...

Debian Configuration :: Blank Java Window On Squeeze?

All the online Java tests I have found tells me that all is fine. I've browsed around quite a bit, and some are suggesting incompatibilities between Java and certain display drivers, but unsure of how to proceed.

Debian Configuration :: Cannot Open Java Socket - Port (9955) Closed

Feb 26, 2010

I have a java application that I wrote recently. It runs off port 9955. The application runs great on my mac server. When I installed it on my linux box i cant get to it from outside the box. A port scan shows the port as closed. I flushed my iptables, did not help. I can telnet into the app locally, from the server and it works great. I cannot telnet from outside the server. I have a reference to the application in /etc/services as a tcp port (which it is).

netstat shows it as listening

Debian Configuration :: Extremely Slow Transfer Rate On Flash Disk ?

Jul 12, 2011

Same computer and flash. Two results on different OS:

Write speed under debian: 0.4 MB/s

Write speed under Windows: 6.6 MB/s

From what i've been reading on the net I guess it's something to do with the mount - sync option.

I've notice that there are couple of workarounds but all of them are pretty tedious.

Is there any simple (GUI - one/two clicks) tool that allow to mount/unmount flash disk easily using the correct options?

I'm using Squeeze 6.0.2 (Kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64), gnome 2.30.2

Debian :: Flash Doesn't Work With Iceweasel On Squeeze 6.01?

Jul 9, 2011

After using testing (now Wheezy) for almost a year and breaking my machine (latest nvidia broken packages), I went back to vanilla Squeeze (after updates, now at 6.02).Nothing from outside the stable repos; not even the nvidia driver (kept it at default and nouveau)Repo "deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main non-free" enabled. It seems flash is not working with iceweasel; I either have a message which says "Cannot play media: you do not have the correct version of the flash player. Download the correct version," with a link to Adobe's site, of media appears in broken pieces. In order to keep my system "clean," I haven't downloaded anything from Adobe, and a search on this forum suggested installing flashplugin-nonfree or flashplayer-mozilla. Did both (can't have them at the same time), restarted, no joy.

~$ apt-cache policy flashplayer-mozilla
flashplayer-mozilla:
Installed: 2:10.3.181.26-0.1

Debian :: Doesn't Support Flash On The Web - Simultaneously Work With Two Or Three Different Languages?

Dec 10, 2010

I have worked with it for some weeks when I installed it over the summer on my PowerPC. I am now trying to decide whether Debian (vs. Ubuntu) is the right OS for my brand new Toshiba Intel Core i3 with 3 GB of RAM.

1. Flash -- it is true that Debian doesn't support flash on the web? It certianly did not support flash on my PowerPC. I would appreciate if someone can give me a straight answer on this.

2. Languages -- can I simultaneously work with two or three different languages on Debian? I frequently have to type in several languages (e.g., English, French, Persian, Turkish). I am writing a dissertation, so this is very important to me.

3. Finally where can I read a little about comparison between Debian and Ubuntu? My understanding is that Debian is faster than Ubuntu and generally better. Ubuntu is after all based on Debian which means that it's secondary in stability, features, speed, etc. to Debian. Is this generalization correct? Or am I completely off the wall?

Debian Multimedia :: Adobe Flash 10 Consistent Way To Make It Work?

Dec 5, 2010

I have the latest version of Debian Lenny AMD64 installed on my brother's computer. I am trying to get Adobe versions of flash to install on his computer. It seems no matter what I do I get the freeware version installed which unfortunately is not up to the task. If I try to remove the freeware version the package manager tells me it needs to remove the gnome as well. How can I keep the gnome and at the same time get Adobe version to install. Yes I have a multimedia repository installed and I tried reinstalling Mozilla Adobe package with no success.

Searching forums did not result in any helpful ideas.Things I have already found out from reading this forum.-I have to purge all freeware version of the Adobe flash plug-in. I can't seem to find a way to do this without removing the gnome desktop. It seems that the plug-in is a dependency for the gnome desktop environment. Yes I want to continue to use the gnome desktop environment. I have to install flashplayer-mozilla package from the Debian multimedia nonfree repository. That I can successfully do, and have done so without success. It installs successfully, but it still shows version 9 of the plug-in. I believe version 9 is the free version. What I would like to use the free version, it's just not compatible with the websites I go to.

Debian Configuration :: Touchpad Does Not Work In X

Jun 14, 2010

My touchpad just stopped working recently. It works in the framebuffer console, cat /dev/input/mice gives sensible output, X -retro shows a moving cross and it is completely functional during the gdm login prompt. But for some reason, it just stops responding halfway through the login process (roughly at the same time as gnome complains about my old laptop battery, if that is any help.) I run Debian Squeeze with Linux 2.6.32-5-686. The touchpad is a Synaptics PS/2 pad according to Xorg.

I do not understand the problem, actually. X seems unwilling to talk to my touchpad for some reason. When I run X manually from single-user mode, it complains that it cannot talk to my touchpad, but it works in the -retro test mode. As soon as gnome kicks in however, it stops working. synclient -l gives sensible output.

My external USB mouse works just fine.
