Debian :: Configure Static Ip For Removable Hard Drive Install For Use On Multiple Machines?

ok I am using Debian 4 bigmem and I set up static ip for my box. This is for a class and we will be moving the hard drives around the lab to different computers. My question is what do I configure to get Debian to be ok with my using different nics at different times.
My first time I used it, I had eth0, but now I'm on a different computer (same type of hardware on all systems) but my nic is now eth1... And I had to set up static again for that nic. How can I have it just maintain a static ip for whatever nic/mac address on the computer that my hard drive happens to be put on?

I have a samsung removable hard drive, which have 3 fat32 partitions on it. When I plug into the usb. nothing happened and i just see a sdc was added in /dev/...so, there's nothing wrong with the drive, because i can use it on windows and ubuntu.
I have 4 debian boxes networked together through a basic 5 port switch. I am trying to simulate 2 Local Area Networks joined together by a WAN. I installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago on a spare laptop (on a Serial ATA Samsung 500500JI). It was my first experiment outside the Windows and Apple OSs and all went well. However, I need the hard-drive (and more specifically the files on it) on a new Windows-run laptop. I have attached the hard-drive via a caddy to both a Windows and an Apple laptop. Both recognise it as a healthy drive, but neither will allow me to browse the files on it.
I'm a little out of my depth, but I get the sense that it may have something to do with either the file system, or the assigning of a drive letter. I can't currently change the drive letter in Windows 7 using its onboard drive management control panel. All such options are greyed out. I've now put the HDD back in the Ubuntu laptop and am looking at the disk utility, but honestly don't know what I'm looking to do.
I have a rather large USB drive that I'd like to be able to use across the different machines I own. I'm having a hard time figuring out what would be the best file system to use on it to be able to read/write things from the 3 OSs I'm in contact with: Windows, Linux and Mac.
I have 4 SATA hard drives, and they are named sda, sdb, sdc and sdd. My problem is that the drives always randomly switch between these names when I restart my system. It is not really a problem as far as mounting, because I use the UUID option. I'm using the sensors applet to monitor the temps of the hard drives, and I can never tell which one is which, because the drive names are always changing.Is there any way to have the drives named the same way every time?
Any basic description of how linux assigns drive letters? I understand that a drive letter assignment is not static. If I add a drive between /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, my /dev/sdb will become /dev/sdc and the new drive will become /dev/sdb. I have a hot swap tray and have come into some unexpected behavior. I removed /dev/sde from the hot swap tray and then loaded another drive into this same tray. When I mounted the new drive with options in fstab, it wouldn't mount because the new drive was /dev/sdf, not /dev/sde. Apparently, linux is looking at the id of the drive in addition to it's place in the BIOS chain.
My fstab entry is: /dev/sde /backups auto noauto,rw,noexec,async,user 0 0 I was avoiding using UUIDs in the fstab so that new HDDs would not have to be "registered" in the fstab prior to use. Is there a way to tell linux (or fstab) whatever drive is plugged into SATA channel X mount to /mountpoint?
Recently set up root encryption with a couple of LVM volumes inside one LUKS volume, and I am just a little confused as to how I would go about getting it to automatically unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, I presume I would have to put the drive in the fstab inside my initramfs (if there is one), and add a hook for USB device support.
But I digress, essentially, I want to know what I have to do to enable my LUKS volume (containing all of my partitions sans /boot) to unlock using a keyfile stored on a USB flash drive, rather than a manually entered passphrase.
I am trying to get preseed working on a bunch of machines with multiple NICs but it doesn't pick the right interface and/or gets "no link" on all interfaces. My PXE kernel line looks like so (I have auto=true priority=critical and interface=auto)
If this has been covered before I couldn't find it.
What I'm "Not" Asking... I'm not asking about installing the CD image to a USB hard drive to boot a live install version. I've done that to see is my computer will boot from the USB and it does.
What I want to do is this:
An actual hard disk install of full featured Linux to a portable USB Hard Drive. I want to be able to plug in the USB HHD and go Linux. (Why you might ask? Fair enough. The laptop is my wife's computer and she says absolutely no to Linux.
i just burnt a debian lenny 504 live disk. i don't think there's a way to install it to hard drive. i just did a google search and it appears that the latest debian lenny 504 cannot be installed to hard drive with the live cd. from what i have read, i need to get a "netinstall" iso (this is new territory for me). can anyone supply me with a link for an iso with a hash verification? i would be most grateful. the disk i had previously must be corrupted because the install quits at 5%.
I am trying to install Debian onto an IBM ThinkPad 240X. The 240X will only boot from either an internal IDE hard-drive, or an external floppy-drive. For now, I have decided to ignore the option of using the floppy drive. I have other computers to support the process, an IBM ThinkPad T43p (Pentium M) as well as my primary laptop, a ThinkPad X200s (Core2 Duo). I have tried installing the hard-drive to be used into the T43p, then booting the Debian NetInstall from a USB thumb-drive, installing as usual, then transferring the hard-drive into the 240X. This does not completely work; GRUB and LILO will load, but the computer freezes very early (almost immediately) in the boot process.
Please note, I am trying this on a CF card. The 240X has an IDE-CF adapter, and my X200s has a USB-CF reader.So, I want to try to load the actual Debian Net Install on the 240X. Ideally, it will happen something like this; I will partition the hard-drive into these 2 partitions:
sda1: the Debian Net Installer sda2: an empty partition waiting to have Debian installed onto it URL...
but the part I do not understand is how to get GRUB or LILO installed onto the CF card. I am wary of running commands such as "grub-install" as I do not want to mess up my GRUB install on the computers this command would be run from. If I run a command such as this, I would want it to ingore everything about the computer it is being run from, and only modify files or install onto the CF card. I would not want it to acknowledge the computer it is being run from as far as available installs, architecture, etc.

I've recently tried to installed Debian 8. The problem is that the partition menu gives me these 3 options: 1. Configure iSCSI volumes 2. Undo changes to partitions 3. Finish partitioning and write changes to disk
There are no options for defining partitions or any hard drive during installation. After searching the internet i found that the problem because the solid state disk SSD cache. How I install a Debian 8 with computer which has a hard disk drive and a solid state disk cache.

I would like to build an oem style install partions that is bootable with menu to choose if I want to run install or boot already installed system. I would like to include current source packages on the same dive so if I don't have internet access at time of install, can can still install what I need.I know with Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can get this but how can I do this with Debian?
I am trying to configure grub to be able to boot from any of the four hard-drives that I have, three of which are plugged into an nVidia RAID controller and the other is plugged into a JMicron controller. Grub seems to only see the loan one and not the other three.Is there a way to get Grub to see the disks attached to another controller?
I have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.

I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.
I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.
I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!
BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.
I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.

I have a Debian server that had only one onboard NIC (1000 Gbps) but now I've added two PCI Intel Pro 1000 NIC's into the system to bump up the total # of NIC's to three. My question now is can I specifically assign or force Debian which interface to configure as ethx? I need a script to copy music from a network drive to my local disk. I require the script to auto mount the remote server, then to create the directory path to the mp3's I have a list of all teh songs in the following format, note some have spaces.

I can use the following to mount the directory:
mount -t cifs //7800SPARE4/Users /dest-o username=user,password=pass
I'm thinking the best way would be to get the share name 7800SPARE and the grep for all these in the list, then mount it and do a while read LINE However I would need to creat the folders, I am unsure on how to do this. I think I would need to sed the backslashes to forward ones and then use rsync? Then unmount and move on to the next ones, if I can't mount the share It would be nice to log it and skip it.
I have a Linux application(ProMAX 5000) running in a virtual Machine on my windows OS. I am using an external Hard drive of 250G in ext2 file system as my device for large data read, write & execute file system. I have already mounted the device from /etc/fstab. But i want my application to access this device as a Primary data storage device OR Secondary storage device. What command will i invoke to partition this 250G drive as my primary or secondary storage device.
When you run a Linux live CD it automatically detects your hardware configuration, or at least tries to. Say you got a live CD and it works perfect on one computer, detects all the hardware. If you install the operating system from the live CD to a hard drive, does it only install the drivers you need for your hardware?
If so, say you were to hypothetically do that on a removable hard drive that you lock and unlock with the hardware keys; would that mean if you want to move the drive from one computer to another regularly, the OS would not be configured properly on a different hardware configuration, and wouldn't be able to configure itself properly because it is now on a hard drive? I know that Linux does try to detect new hardware each time it boots, but I guess the short version of the question is: Does installing a distribution on a live CD to a hard drive mean you will not have all the drivers available on the CD?
This is not something I am sure I will ever plan to do, but it would be no different than if you wanted to swap your drive into a new computer. If it could at least still connect to the Internet it might try to reconfigure itself. If installing the live CD means you get absolutely all the contents on the CD, that would answer my question. Maybe someone might know exactly how that would work.

How to mount multiple external HDD's. I'd like to link or mount the music, torrents, and general files from several external hard drives and apply permissions (in some cases I only want the mount or link to be read only).
My setup: - Seagate Dockstar running Debian squeeze (it's headless so I don't have a gui running) - Two external HDD's with one partition on each (250GB and 400GB)
What I'd like to accomplish: 1. Mount the external HDD's to /media/HDDs as read/write (this is already working using udev and autofs and it's available in samba) 2. I'd like the MUSIC directories on both external HDD's to show up under the same mount point. In other words I want the MUSIC folders (from both HDD's) to appear as one large library of music. And I only want this to be readonly. It will be used as the library for mpd and/or squeezebox. 3. Mount a directory used to download torrents to. I'll probably pick on HDD as the target for torrent dowloads. But let me know if you have any other ideas regarding this.

I am doing a new build with an SSD / HDD combo, and I am wondering, is there a way I can install Ubuntu spread across both drives? I know I can do this in Fedora, but I haven't seen much of a feature like this in Ubuntu.
I have a server that runs a minimal instalation of debian 5.0. The server has only 128mb of ram. I am trying to install virtualmin but I keep getting the message: spinner: fork: Cannot allocate memory
I have read that this is because the system is out of memory. I am wondering if there still is a way to get this installed om my machine. After the installation is complete I have methods of reducing the amount of memory the application usses.
I used to have all my mp3s, photos, etc. on a Seagate "Freeagent" removable USB drive and share it over a Windows network. We've gone all Linux in the house and I tried to export the same drive over NFS (got the NTFS support installed, ntfs-3g) but get this error:
