Ubuntu :: Hard-drive Not Recognised On Other Machines

Jun 7, 2010

I installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago on a spare laptop (on a Serial ATA Samsung 500500JI). It was my first experiment outside the Windows and Apple OSs and all went well. However, I need the hard-drive (and more specifically the files on it) on a new Windows-run laptop. I have attached the hard-drive via a caddy to both a Windows and an Apple laptop. Both recognise it as a healthy drive, but neither will allow me to browse the files on it.

I'm a little out of my depth, but I get the sense that it may have something to do with either the file system, or the assigning of a drive letter. I can't currently change the drive letter in Windows 7 using its onboard drive management control panel. All such options are greyed out. I've now put the HDD back in the Ubuntu laptop and am looking at the disk utility, but honestly don't know what I'm looking to do.

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drive Not Now Recognised?

Jun 20, 2011

Recently I took the internal hard drive from my old desktop PC (Ubuntu 10.04 ) placed it into an external HD Case connected it up to my new desktop PC (Ubuntu 10.04.) and I could access the files on the external HD, that is until this weekend, I now get this error message. Unable to mount 319 GB Filesystem

Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Could someone please advise me what needs to be done , so I once again view and access the files held on my external HD.

Fedora Installation :: Hard Drive Not Recognised During F11 Install?

Jun 11, 2009

I'm reasonably noob to Linux but now seriously confused Installing F11 onto a Dell Precision 490, 4GB RAM and 250GB WD2500YS. I get through to drive partitioning and there is no drive listed. Especially odd as the drive is running F10 quite happily. Reconnect a Seagate Barracuda 500GB and restart, this is seen and is the only drive listed even though it is SATA1 not SATA0. Boot the F10 installation DVD and that recognises both drives! I have tried both AHCI and ATA modes with the same results. Can anyone point me in the right direction or do I go out and get another Seagate drive, no I can't use the existing one.

I have a Samsung TV that can be and is connected via DLNA with my XP machines wirelessly. There is NO WAY I can make it see my Ubuntu machine though.I have the 10.04 and I have tried almost all the available programs for this OS.Name it and I have tried it: Mediatomb, ushare, PS3MediaServer and others that I cannot recall right now. These programs are installed with no errors and they look like they run correctly, their web interfaces work fine but that's all.None of them has been ever found by the TV,-but it can see the native Samsung program PC Share runnning on the XPs.What's the problem with my Ubuntu system and it cannot be recognised by the TV?It's not that it won't play this or that file. It's that it won't see the server AT ALL.

Debian :: Configure Static Ip For Removable Hard Drive Install For Use On Multiple Machines?

Sep 13, 2010

ok I am using Debian 4 bigmem and I set up static ip for my box. This is for a class and we will be moving the hard drives around the lab to different computers. My question is what do I configure to get Debian to be ok with my using different nics at different times.

My first time I used it, I had eth0, but now I'm on a different computer (same type of hardware on all systems) but my nic is now eth1... And I had to set up static again for that nic. How can I have it just maintain a static ip for whatever nic/mac address on the computer that my hard drive happens to be put on?

Server :: 1TB Drive Not Only Recognised As 910GB (before Formatting)?

Mar 10, 2011

Distro=Deb 6 Samsung Spinpoint F3 is only recognised as 917GB. I just partitioned it and formatted it. I would normally expect it so say 1024GB (or something close, preferably larger) and after formatting have 900GB free. I almost have 900GB free, so it's not the smaller space that's the problem; it's the math.

root@localhost:/home/user# df -h /backups
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sde1 917G 200M 871G 1% /backups
917GB - 200 MB != 871 GB

As you can see, this will be used for backups and I want everything working as intended.

General :: Move Smaller Hard Drive To Partition On A Larger Hard Drive?

Mar 16, 2010

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.

Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive. If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 On External Hard Drive Drive?

Jun 19, 2011

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
