Debian :: Mount Multiple External Hard Drives ?

How to mount multiple external HDD's. I'd like to link or mount the music, torrents, and general files from several external hard drives and apply permissions (in some cases I only want the mount or link to be read only).
My setup:
- Seagate Dockstar running Debian squeeze (it's headless so I don't have a gui running)
- Two external HDD's with one partition on each (250GB and 400GB)
What I'd like to accomplish:
1. Mount the external HDD's to /media/HDDs as read/write (this is already working using udev and autofs and it's available in samba)
2. I'd like the MUSIC directories on both external HDD's to show up under the same mount point. In other words I want the MUSIC folders (from both HDD's) to appear as one large library of music. And I only want this to be readonly. It will be used as the library for mpd and/or squeezebox.
3. Mount a directory used to download torrents to. I'll probably pick on HDD as the target for torrent dowloads. But let me know if you have any other ideas regarding this.
Since I have the first one done, how would I accomplish 2 & 3?

I just switched to Debian 6 from Mepis 8.5. When Debian loads, it doesn't recognize or mount my external hard drives.

I want all my external drives mounted when I start OS.I don't want to do it for a specific external drive. I want my external drives mounted by default.o you have an idea? Does linux have such a configuration I can change?

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

I have a new install of debian on my laptop. When I plug in my external hard drive (usb) I get the message. Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume 'External Drive'.

I recently had issues with the latest version of the Linux Kernels and I got that fixed but ever since that has happened none of my Drives will mount and they aren't even recognized.

I can't mount my external hard drive with the graphic interface of my Xfce desktop anymore, since the latest upgrade.
The disk does show up, but when I try mounting it, I get a pop up window telling me that :
Failed to mount "My_Passport". Not authorized to perform operation.

I am trying to mount an external USB hard drive. I'm using Debian Lenny 5. I tried to right-click on the hard drive and then select the mount command inside the gnome desktop environment but it gives me an error. Is there an easy way to mount and unmount this hard drive? The hard drive itself is formatted from the factory in NTFS. I'm going to leave it in this file format is a need to use it with Windows machines as well.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine as dual boot using WUBI but on a seperate partition to Windows. Loving it so far, but i cannot get any external drives to mount - i've tried pen drives, camera memory cards and hard drives but nothing comes up.
I have just tried restarting with a pen drive plugged in, and it finally showed something in the computer folder - "memory stick drive" is shown (and my internal CD drive, which i'm not sure was there before.), but i still can't access it and when I try to unmount it gives me the message

I am trying to figure out how to get the UUID for some of my external hard drives.the internet revealed a couple of promising leads, this is what I have tried so far:
ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid -> didn't list the hard discs
blkid -> didn't list the hard discs
lsusb -v -> listed the hard disc but no uuid
A normally formatted usb key is listed with uuid. The external hard discs are fully encrypted by truecrypt(realcrypt). I have been reading not so great things about that itself, but for now I don't have a promising alternative that I can use with windows as well.Any google searches don't seem to cast any new light on this for me,I'd be open to suggestions if there's a better way to get a definite ID for a hard drive... I just need to be able to mount it with realcrypt

I currently use Ubuntu Lucid, and I'm curious if there is a program that I can install and run through it which will defragment an external USB hard drive.
My 500GB hard drive is used a lot, and I often add/remove stuff on and off of it, and I'm sure it's slowly starting to get a little fragmented with the amount of deletion and addition I do on it.
Does anybody know of a way to check and potentially defragment just it through linux? Or am I gonna have to just find a windows computer and do it there?
FYI, I don't care to nor know I really don't need to defragment my Ext4 drive to which Ubuntu's installed, its' just the external I am curious about.

So me and my friend our on my network and we have done a bit of hacking and have managed to get music off of pandora and have it sort it by forlder /media/...../artist/album/song and it won't redownload a song that we have already downloaded (this is done by our code that we stripped from pithos and modified a bit) also we wrote a bash script that renames all of our files correctly and tags them with .mp3
I was wondering if I could link our two hard drives to make sure that we aren't both downloading the same songs. I am also having issues getting my external accessible on the network i have it formatted to use a FAT32 file system.

I have an external hard drive that contains some 600 GB of files and folders. I use this external drive frequently and so the files and folders in it change on a daily basis. I want to back up this drive on another external drive. What is the best way to sync these two external hard drives on a daily basis?I have been trying to sync them through the Grsync software. But I think either I am not choosing the right options or else Grsync is not the best/right software for my purpose because the second hard drive does not ever become completely identical to the first one. What am I doing wrong? Should I go with another software? If so, are there suggestions for a good one? Or am I doing something not right?
When I run Grsync, I choose the first external hd as my source and the second one as my destination.Then below that I check "Preserve time," "Preserve permissions," "Preserve owner," and "Preserve group." Below that, I also check "Verbose" and "Show transfer progress." Other options are all unchecked.Should I reconfigure these options?FYI, I frequently rename, edit, modify, or else completely delete files and folders in the primary hard drive. Hence, my need to back it up everyday so that the change would be replicated in the second hard drive.

I have a second hard drive that I plan on placing in a computer I wish to use this computer as a server so my question is how could I use these 2 hard drives as one lets say one is 80Gb and the other is 40GB how could they be shown as 120GB instead of being seperate The installation of server planned on being used is 10.04.

I am running Ubuntu on a box with a couple of hard drives, and on a network where we have another Ubuntu machine and a couple of windows boxes. I use filezilla to upload files to other web servers but filezilla will only access files on my main hard drive, not on the second drive and not on the rest of the network.

I am just trying F-Spot because a novice ubuntu friend needed help. ubuntu 10.04.2. As a test, on my PC, I have pasted some photos into a particular test folder in my current Ubuntu (in my user folders). I have also nominated a folder as a destination for imported photos. After starting F-Spot, I try to use the test (source) folder in F-Spot with the intention of importing the test photos.
I am using a PC with three hard drives. One has various distros installed, mostly ubuntu versions, all in their own partitions. The other two hard drives are ones I use for data, including backups. They are both continuously mounted. However, the import 'file finder' facility only lists the two data drives, it does not list the current home user folders, which is where my test (source) folder is(!!!)

I am thinking of building a new computer. I have been using Ubuntu for a couple years now, but I am not good with the terminal usage. Nevertheless, if I was to go back to Windows I be lost. My Computer would be:
Motherboard = Micro ATX
Hard Drive 1 80GB = Operating System
Hard Drive 2 250GB = Home (my documents)
Hard Drive 3 500GB = Media (videos, music & pictures)
I would like the file to end up on the desired hard drive automatically. And my main menu to display accordingly. In other words, when I click over music, under places in my computer menu, for the computer to know which hard drive to go to. The reason for wanting this setup is, to provide security for the OP, separate my private documents from my music and videos. Now I am using external hard drives. But, it just do not look right, besides the menu is funky.
Would I have to use a RAID set-up or just the partition tool. Does anyone knows of a post or tutorial on how to accomplish this? (plain English would be better).

I have a problem that i have tried to solve for a couple of days.server with some internal disks. Those disks are for the core-system and some file server related stuff.Beside the server i got two external LaCie boxes that contains 4x1tb disks each. The disks inside the boxes are RAID5, so the system sees every box as one whole "disk".Now to the problem. I just can�t get those "two" RAID cofigurations two be auto mounted at boot. I have tried to put them in /etc/fstab with a whole bunch of different options but nothing works. The system sees them but don't auto mount them, and i can manually mount them without any problem at all. I have tried to "google" the problem but can't find any similar

After some googling I found out that there might be a problem with highspeed external USB drives in Linux in general. Im using Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit and have now this problem I think. My external hard drive is working fine but when I type dmesg in a terminal I can see message errors that appear randomly with all my external hard drives. The problem is now, I have all my music on this drive and randomly I will have hangs while listening to music and the performance while tranferring data between my notebook and the USBs is poor. Anybody know a workaround for this problem or have the same experience or have more details about it? My principle USB device that I use is an iOmega 500 GB what I use on my Compaq 6730s. The other USB device is a Toshiba 1 TB. I tried to transfer the files into my homefolder to avoid this problem but there is no chance as on my notebook is no more space.

I have a FAT32 external USB hard drive with a bunch of stuff I want to copy onto a RHEL server. Is it as simple as it is on a Mac or PC where I just plug it in and it will show up, then I can copy all the files off of it?If it is, how do I safely remove the drive after I'm done with it?

I have been trying to install Ubuntu on my new computer as a duel boot with Windows 7. My computer has four 1TB hard drives, One with Windows 7 installed, two that are used for storing media (both are independent, not in a RAID or anything like that) and one empty hard drive. This hard drive contains a 901.51 GB NTFS partition, and 30.00 GB of Unallocated space, I wish to install Ubuntu in this unallocated space; giving it 20 GB (the 10 GB left over might be used for installing XBMC Live). But when I boot Ubuntu's Live CD the installer doesn't show me the unallocated space, and doesn't really show me any of the extra Hard drives.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Zotac nettop. When I boot up normally, all my external USB drives are recognized and mounted properly in /media.
But when I boot up without Gnome (i.e. there's no monitor attached so Gnome doesn't start) they don't mount right: I see directories for them inside /media but normal users don't have access, and root only sees an empty directory.

I have set up two external hard drives to automount in fstab with the following lines:
/dev/sdb1 /media/DownstairsBackup ntfs-3g rw,auto,user,exec,sync 0 0
/dev/sda1 /media/UpstairsBackup ntfs-3g rw,auto,user,exec,sync 0 0
And right after I restart, all users have permission to read and write, and everything is fine. However, I have an automated backup utility (BackinTime) installed to back up particular (mounted network) directories every night, but whenever I check up on it the next day, I get the error "Unable to mount ..... Authorization required". (These network directories are mounted into the local filesystem in fstab as well.) Oddly enough, if I run BackinTime by hand as the users, it works fine. I'm running 10.04 LTS.

I have been trying to move away from Windows2000 on Ubuntu for months. I have a few applications that I run on Windows that I have been unable to find usuable equivalents on Ubuntu eg Outlook/Mobile sync application required for my job and a DVB TV card application for home. So it looks like I am stuck ruuning W2K and Linux for at least a while and indeed I have been using GRUB2 to select between W2K and Ubuntu.
I need some basic advice about setting up GRUB2. My philosphy when it comes to PC data is you can never have enough backups and I avoid any single point of failure. So I have always used two hard drives which I keep in sync almost daily with FreeFileSync. I also swap my most critical encrypted data between a laptop and desktop. Then I also alternate external USB drives stored away from my home.
My current partions are
When I installed on the Ubuntu 500GB I let it & GRUB2 take the default options so it boots from Hd1 and I assume certain executables are stored at the begining of the Ubuntu partition as well as configuration files in its file system.
Now I'm replacing the 500GB with a 1.5TB and the old 500Gb will become my backup drive. I want to keep the backup drive bootable in its onw right. If either hard drive fails I want a bootable system and acccess to my data.
So my plan is to use the following partitions.
I can install W2K on the 1.5Tb from scratch or use Acronis to restore an image file. Then I can install Ubuntu from scratch.
OK now for my questions.
1) Can I get GRUB2 to put its executables and configuration files on a small partition of its own? I see no reason why they should be dependant on a specific Ubuntu partition. I have read posts mentioning this but not sure if this has to be a bootable Linux or just a file system with the config files.
2) Can I run update-grub on any Linux and store or copy the config files to the partition in 1?
3) I will use BIOS to determine which hard drive is first to boot. When I run update-grub (or when it runs during the new Ubuntu install on Hd1) I dont want GRUB2 to do anything with Hd2, not even know Hd2 exists, it that an option?

I have 3 hard drives installed to my system, 1TB, 2TB and 500GB drives with the following configuration:

I can boot to the Ubuntu installation in the 2TB drive. My problem reversed when I reinstalled grub to one of the Ubuntu installations in the 1TB drive. I can boot to any of the OS's in the 1TB drive, but not to the Ubuntu in the 2TB drive. The error message is the same as above. I have no idea what am I doing wrong and I would be really grateful for any assistance.
