Debian Installation :: Get Preseed Working On A Bunch Of Machines With Multiple NICs?

Mar 15, 2011

I am trying to get preseed working on a bunch of machines with multiple NICs but it doesn't pick the right interface and/or gets "no link" on all interfaces. My PXE kernel line looks like so (I have auto=true priority=critical and interface=auto)

label squeeze
kernel debian-installer/squeeze/i386/linux
append vga=788 initrd=debian-installer/squeeze/i386/initrd.gz auto=true priority=critical ramdisk_size=10800 root=/dev/rd/0 rw url=example.com/d-i/squeeze/preseed.cfg interface=auto netcfg/dhcp_timeout=60

Ubuntu Installation :: Bonding Multiple Wireless NICs?

Nov 20, 2010

I have an Asus R1F laptop with a build in wireless card. I also have 2 USB dongles that we used to use old desktop machines. All of the cards work fine in Ubuntu. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, 2.6.35-22-generic-pae.

The problem is that I have really bad signal on my side of the house and the connection is dropped quite often. I've tried just connecting on the devices at the same time, they all connect fine but nothing actually works. I read about bonding interface cards on this blog and that would solve all my problems - if a usb dongle could act as a backup for when the normal connection is dropped and while it is reconnecting.

I tried what was written and also did some Googling, but every way that I try seems to work fine until 2 wireless devices are bonded. When that happens they both disconnect and reconnect like crazy. This happens both with and without network manager running.

Build in card[wlan0]: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
USB[wlan1]: Cisco LinkSys Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter
USB[wlan2]: Realtek RTL 818713 WLAN Adapter
I load the module:
Code:
modprobe bonding mode=1 miimon=100 downdelay=200 updelay=200

CentOS 5 Networking :: Multiple Nics With Multiple Gateway ?

Jun 16, 2009

I have a CentOS 5.3 box with three network interfaces in it. Each interface is attached to a separate VLAN and I want traffic to stay on each network segment. What I cant figure out is why I cannot get each interface to have its own gateway and everything gets sent through the default gateway. The basically takes my possible 3Gb total bandwidth and throws it down a single 1Gb pipe. Then on top of that, if I take down the interface (ifdown) that has the current default gateway,I loose contact to the other two interfaces. When I look at the routes, each one of the interfaces shows the gw as 0.0.0.0 and defers to the default route. So I delete the route and try to add a new route with:

[root@testsan ~]# ip route add 10.1.15.0/24 via 10.1.15.1 dev eth2

but end up with the error:

RTNETLINK answers: Network is unreachable

Ubuntu Installation :: Preseed-file Not Working As Expected On Lucid Desktop Install - Read

Jul 30, 2010

I have a problem to get it to work. The installer seems to read the preseed-file alright, and some of the values defined in the preseed-file are taken into account. The questions regarding locale, keyboard layout and time zone are answered using the preseed-file, but in the user account creation-step the process goes wrong. The Full name-field is obtained from the preseed-file, but the login-name is generated by the installer and not read from the preseed. Also the password-fields are empty and not filled in. Also the script that I've defined with preseed/late_command is never run.

I tried searching the forums but no-one had exactly this kind of problem, so it makes me think that this has to be some trivial error I'm doing. Could someone take a look at these configs and see if there's something wrong with them? How should I continue resolving this?

Debian Installation :: Preseed Hostname Reconfiguration

Aug 25, 2014

I'm trying to create preseed configuration for debian. Currently I'm working with Debian version: 7 (wheezy), Installer build: 20130613+deb7u2+b1.

What I want to achieve is to have different network configuration than during installation.

I have two preseed files, one in intrd and the second that is fetched through http (url argument to kernel)

In the initrd file there are settings required to get dhcp network settings that will be used during installation:

Code: Select alld-i netcfg/choose_interface select auto
d-i netcfg/get_hostname string unassigned-hostname
d-i netcfg/get_domain string unassigned-domain

Then in the preseed file that is downloaded from network i have this:

Code: Select alld-i netcfg/choose_interface select auto
d-i netcfg/disable_autoconfig boolean true

d-i netcfg/get_ipaddress string 192.168.56.199
d-i netcfg/get_netmask string 255.255.255.0

[Code] ....

IP address settings work as expected, at the end of the installation netcfg runs again and when installed system boots it has static address set (.199). However hostname stays the same, it is not reconfigured.

I have tried many different combinations like removing get_hostname and get_domain options form initrd preseed and appending 'priority=critical' to kernel boot arguments but no matter what I do it always fails.

Is there any way to do this? I know that hostname can be set by hostname= krenel boot arg or by using dhcp option but I'd like to avoid this.

Debian Installation :: Preseed : Keyboard Config Not Taken Into Account?

Jul 7, 2011

I'm trying to automate Squeeze 6 installation with preseed.cfg, but the keyboard configuration (fr) is not taken into account.Given the debconf logs, it seems that the language is set before preseed.cfg is read. So I added "console-keymaps-at/keymap=fr locale=fr_FR" to the syslinux.cfg kernel line. That skips the installer keyboard selection page. But in debconf logs I can seed "Setting debconf/language to en".What am I doing wrong ?Here are the related options I set in preseed.cfg. I can't find an exhaustive debconf options list, and their exact meaning ; does anyone know of one ?d-i debian-installer/locale string fr

Debian Installation :: Preseed Install Of 8.2 Amd 64 Fails To Wait For DHCP

Oct 9, 2015

I've run into a situation where when performing a pxe/preseed install the system boots up into the install without issue, getting a dhcp address, then the installer begins to configure the network and it gets to where it request a dhcp address and it instantly fails the install stating that we are either not using dhcp or it's slow.

I've added d-i netcfg/dhcp_timeout string 600 to the preseed file but it doesn't seem to be honoured here since it doesn't wait 600 seconds before failing. I have 2 other identical systems that install using the same preseed file but the installer completes as expected. This system has no issues installing centos just debian fails. I did try, once the install failed, to switch to the console and run udhcpc and the server received the address reserved for it.

Is there a method to force debian installer to wait a bit longer for the dhcp server besides what I've already done?

Debian :: Configure Static Ip For Removable Hard Drive Install For Use On Multiple Machines?

Sep 13, 2010

ok I am using Debian 4 bigmem and I set up static ip for my box. This is for a class and we will be moving the hard drives around the lab to different computers. My question is what do I configure to get Debian to be ok with my using different nics at different times.

My first time I used it, I had eth0, but now I'm on a different computer (same type of hardware on all systems) but my nic is now eth1... And I had to set up static again for that nic. How can I have it just maintain a static ip for whatever nic/mac address on the computer that my hard drive happens to be put on?

Fedora Installation :: DRPMs Versus RPMs With Multiple Machines

Mar 10, 2010

I have a home network with 6+ x86_64 machines, all with similar setups. In the past (FC10 and before), I've had common package repositories (e.g /var/cache/yum/fedora/packages) shared via NFS with all the machines (and with keepcache=1 in /etc/yum.conf). That way, a given RPM only got downloaded once; the other machines would then pull it from my local package repository. And I don't mind the disk usage of keeping one copy of all my old RPMS around.

It seems that while DRPMS is great for a single machine, it doesn't make sense in my case. If I have to download the DRPM 6 times (and take the time/CPU hit to recreate the RPM 6 times), I might as well have downloaded the RPM once and been done with it. Is there a not-too-convoluted method to keep a common package repository across multiple machines even with DRPMS? Or, better, to have that first downloading machine pull a DRPM, generate the RPM, then save the RPM in the local shared repository?

Ubuntu Networking :: NICs On Clean Server Installation Not Working?

Aug 18, 2010

I have a clean installation of Ubuntu Server 10.04 x64 on an HP Proliant DL380 G3. It has two Broadcom NICs in addition to its ILO. During the installation, both NICs were listed... but neither was able to pull DHCP, nor did they function with manual settings. The first NIC is currently connected and is known good. So I left it alone and figured I'd troubleshoot it later (which is now). This server is going to be a VMware Server host. I wanted to install ESXi on it, but it doesn't like the old server's cheap ICH RAID controller.

[Code]...

I noticed here it says they're disabled. so I thought perhaps this was a 64-bit driver issue. So, I booted my trusty Ubuntu desktop 10.04 32-bit live cd, and the NIC works fine. Now, here's where it gets weird. Seeing that, I booted it to Ubuntu server 10.04 32-bit installation from a flash drive, expecting to see the NICs working fine during the installation.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Multiple NICs On The Same Subnet?

Mar 30, 2009

I have a motherboard which has 4 x 1Gbps Ethernet controllers. I would like to use it as a Gateway for my home network. I have a static IP from my ISP which I can use to configure eth0 (I haven't done it yet as the LE-565 is currently sitting behind my Netgear router until I've got DHCP working). I would like to use eth1, eth2 and eth3 for my LAN. How do I set things up so that DHCP is handing out IP addresses on the same subnet (192.168.0.0/24) on all three interfaces?

P.S. I think what I'm asking is: how do I combine all 3 interfaces to behave like a switch (ie. just like my Netgear router)?

In this configuration two instances of the program can communicate and everything is fine. Now, to reduce cost, it want to use only one system with two nics connected to the same switch, running two instances of the above program, each instance attached to two interfaces respectively on the system. I have the following settings:

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

However I cannot ping one from the other.

Neither "ping -I eth1 1.1.2.1" nor "ping -I eth2 1.1.1.1" works.

Ubuntu :: Multiple NICs, Route Traffic Based On IP?

Apr 22, 2011

Does anyone know how to do that? I'm not a total newbie, but I'm also not a linux guru (but usually can google my way to a solution...usually).

ETA: Source and destination IP for routing. We have 1 NIC with a public IP, all public IP's should talk to it.Another NIC with a private IP, all private traffic should talk to this.In practice, I have some devices on a different subnet of the public IP range we have that will only talk to the private IP.

Ubuntu :: Syncing Need To Set Up Multiple Machines?

May 4, 2010

I just installed ubuntu 10.04 x64. I have installed it and set it up the way I like on my server, however I now have 3 terminals and a laptop to set it up on the exact same way. As a result Id like some advice on what can and cant be done and how. Preferably I am looking to use programs with GUIs. Thing the style of ubuntu one, software manager etc, not really too into the command line, or conf editing unless there is no other option.

1. I installed all the software from software centre I like. Now I need the same software on the other computers. I know mint has mintbackup where it just exports and imports a list if installed software. I am looking for an ubuntu equivalent.

2. Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons. I install like 20 firefox and thunderbird add ons. sometimes I can't even keep track of them. There must be a way to sync them so that each computer I install ubuntu on I can simply import the list of mozilla add ons and have it auto download them.

3. Mail Contacts and Calender Syncing. I need to sync between my 3 ubuntu machines and my windows mobile 6.5 device for calender, email/phone/name contact lists. Email is taken care of by imap, but lightnings calender isnt and neither are the contacts. If I input a contact on my phone I want it to sync to the other computers I use.

4. Ubuntu one. I have /storage/workfolder in my root directory on my personal server. I want to be able to work on documents at work on my laptop and sync them so that when I get home, they are synced on the server without causing overwrite changes etc.

5. Desktop settings, icon themes, preferences from ubuntu tweak etc. I know this one is a bit more of a long shot, but it takes 20 minutes each computer, to set up the little maximize minimize buttons on the other side, set up cairo dock the way I like, install the icon theme and backgrounds I like. isnt there a way to back this up so it doesnt have to be done each time or so I can make my other computers the same?

Debian Installation :: Updating Three Machines With One Download?

Aug 21, 2011

I have now got three machines with Debian on in my home. I use Mobile Broadband with a very modest monthly limit and remember somehow using Synaptic to gather either Updates or packages to download on one machine where there was another type of internet and could then move the packages back to my computer. Can anyone here remind me of what I would have done there or suggest a means of getting these three updated without blowing my limit. I'd either use a relative's broadband and my netbook, or do the Updates once at home and move the packages to the other two machines.

I'm using Debian 6.01, Gnome edition, 64 bit, on an Atom N450 netbook, a 3ghz dual core AMD pc and a a 2 ghz single core AMD pc, whatever of this is relevant. They have slightly different programs installed but are at the same stage of not being updated yet, with 252mb of them to add.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Preseed - Incorrect CD-ROM

Jun 4, 2010

I'm trying to preseed a 10.04 install, and it's giving me a lot of trouble. I've been using [url] as a guide, but I can't seem to make it work.

I have ripped the x64 alternate install .iso to my hard drive, inserted the preseed files (details on this later) and remastered and burned the iso. When I put the disc into my test PC, it boots up to the CD, checks for English keyboard, enters my custom install option and then fails. It brings up a red screen that says, "Incorrect CD-ROM detected. The CD-ROM drive contains a CD which cannot be used for installation. Please insert a suitable CD to continue with the installation."

The way I've understood the documentation is that there are 2 files that needed edited, and one file that needs created: edit /isolinux/text.cfg, edit /isolinux/isolinux.cfg, and create /preseed.cfg

Here is what I currently have in those files:

Code:

Code:

Code:

The preseed.cfg is 95% copied from the ubuntu documentation, I've only made the changes that are necessary. I'll admit I do not know what most of the boot parameters in the /isolinux/text.cfg file mean.
