Debian :: Searching For Commands Offline
Jul 25, 2015
Two nights ago I was trying to diagnose what was wrong with my internet connection. I couldn't get web pages to load, IRC and ssh weren't connecting, and email wasn't downloading (I still use POP3). I didn't know what to use to check my internet connection. I did a ping, but I didn't know how to interpret the results. So without the internet, I was totally blind.
Are there documents anywhere which install with Debian which I can search offline when my internet connection dies?

I want to do some sort of emacs scripting. Means I want to write a script with several commands like searching copying etc. and then execute it inside of emacs. I'm sure this is possible, but I wasn't able to find a way to do so.

For testing I made a debian 8 dvd 1 installation on an usb stick. I selected desktop gui gnome and lxde. Both work. An ethernet 100mb cabel connection works. I can open iceweasel an surf websites.
If I open synaptic package manager and select vlc for installation or press 'mark all upgrades' I get this message. Insert disk debian gnulinux 8 jessie official dvd bin in drive.
Synaptic does not try to get packages from the internet.
Is a debian 8 dvd 1 installation an off line installation? The package system will not connect to the internet?

For a project I have had to migrate from FreeBSD to Linux and I have decided to choose Debian because I have had good experiences with it.However, since my main development machines are completely offline I have run into a little bit of trouble. Is there a way to specify a .deb package and get a tool to recursively list (and fetch) all dependency packages that are not included in the base install and put them in a folder?
I do not like to be tied to the internet (Never a good idea) and so this would save me a heap of trouble (and journeys to an online PC)Once I have these folders containing packages, then I can simple cd into one of them, dpkg -i the relevent .deb and not have to rely on the DVDs or worry about connecting to an online repositoryLife will be good!Suffice to say FreeBSD can do this well so I strongly believe that Debian will be able to aswell but since it is not normally done, I havn't found much on google about it

I am using Debian 8, fully updated as of this writing.
I want to find a package or some way to get all my linux offline documentation in one place, be it through the web browser or an application, in the official reppos or not does not matter. I've already tried doc-central with apache2 but I get all sorts of error messages and something about no D-bus daemon started, i dont understand, because I;ve installed d-bus service latest version after the error. when I started doc-central correctly through almost blind luck (only once) I did not get any docs just the welcome message.
Is there an alternative to doc-central, a GUI type solution would be preferable. or at least some advice to properly configure doc-central and maybe that d-bus problem, because I clearly did something wrong, I have even tried to write the configuration through an example file for doc-central, but that did not do much, I've read that DocCentral is unstable so maybe I going at it the wrong way.

How do we perform offline patch management with Debian? This isn't a question about which tools to use on Debian to load the patch once it is on a CD and transferred to said offline computer via sneaker net. More, how do I keep said offline (or strictly firewalled) computer in synch?
Pardon me while I make a comparison to Solaris. I am in no way stating Solaris is better. It just happens to be my baseline of experience. In Solaris, I can download Cluster Patch Updates (CPU). So if I build a Solaris box with a CD that is a year or more old, I can download the latest CPU and get the box patched up to date, and from that point on sneaker-net patches as they appear.

I have Debien 7.8 Wheezy installed on my laptop, along with the GNOME desktop. As I absolutely hate the new GNOME layout I want to install MATE so I can get the classic GNOME 2 desktop back. But I have no internet connection here at home (I only have my phone for internet and I can't tether it).
So I'm wondering if it's possible for me to download all the packages and install MATE offline? I don't even know what all the packages are that I need.I can download the packages with my phone with no issue.
I installed Debian on my laptop with the Debian DVDs in case you were wondering. when I downloaded the Debian DVD ISOs, I only saw three ISO files, but the documentation said that it's a 10 DVD set. What happened to the other 7 DVD ISOs?

I'm trying to search for several strings, which I have in a .txt file line by line, on another file.
So the idea is, take input.txt and search for each line in that file in another file, let's call it rules.txt.
So far, I've been able to do this, to search for individual strings:
Code: Select allimport re
shakes = open("output.csv", "r")
for line in shakes:
if re.match("STRING", line):
print line,
How can I change this to input the strings to be searched from another file?
So far I haven't been able to.

I'm using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10:04 64 bit, with kernel 2.6.32-24-generic, and want to use my printer Canon iP1880. I've tried looking on the internet and found: the use of 32 bits drivers for Linux on Linux 64-bit platforms. I've followed the procedure given but still failed to run the printer properly. There may still be the wrong procedure that I did, could you help me again to repeat what procedures I need to do, till now,I still don't know how to uninstalling that drivers? Are there other ways that may be successful so I can use my printer, if I practice?

This is the command line switch I am using:
Code: Select allwget -p -k -e robots=off -U 'Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070802 SeaMonkey/1.1.4' -r www.website.com
For some reason it seems to be downloading too much and taking forever for a small website. It seems that it was following alot of the external links that page linked to.
But when I tried:
Code: Select allwget -E -H -k -K -p www.website.com
It downloaded too little. How much depth I should use with -r? I just want to download a bunch of recipes for offline viewing while staying at a Greek mountain village. Also I don't want to be a prick and keep experimenting on people's webpages.

The panel plugin from xfce4-mixer has a bug:s icon doesn't update as the volume is changed. This bug has already been reported. One curious thing about it is that, if you right click on the volume icon on the panel, go to 'Settings' (or 'Properties', I don't know, mine is in Portuguese) and then close the window that pops on the screen, the icon is updated. Is it possible to open and close the settings window automatically with a bash script? Like this, I could associate this script with the volume keys of my keyboard, so that the icon is updated as the the volume is changed.

How can one have commands in cron? I do not know much but do know that there is something called cron. I read the manpage[quote=Cron Debian Man page]cron - daemon to execute scheduled commands (Vixie Cron)[/quote] and it says to make files in /var/spool/cron/crontabsWhile I went to /var/spool/cron/crontabs I did not find anything there. I just want to tell cron that it runs $sudo aptitude autoclean at some time in the background. Is this possible? If yes, then how ?

I'm messing around with a new install of Debian 8, trying to get a sandbox of Oracle DB 12c up and running in an ESXi environment.
open-vm-tools was giving me troubles (resizing the window didn't make the resolution change), and Oracle DB was fighting me with environmental variables.
Well, while I was troubleshooting the Oracle issue, I needed to reboot. When it came back up, I couldn't log in. When I attempt to log in using known working credentials, the screen goes black like it should, and then loads the login screen again.
I SSH into the box and try to run commands, but every single command I run returns "Command not found" including "ls" "su" "cd".
I'm able to boot into recovery mode, where the commands work under root, but I'm not sure what to fix....

I use two separate systems both running Debian 8. On one (my main) I can't do some commands including ping, shutdown and reboot without running them as root user, however on my other system I can ping and reboot as a non-privileged user. The permissions on both systems are the same for /bin/ping and /sbin/systemctl (reboot). I thought at first it was something to do with what groups my main was in, but that doesn't seem to be the gase.
I know I can fix it by setting setuid for both, but my question is why is it different on both machines? Is there a global setting controlling this in /etc or perhaps an icmp setting?

I'm not really new to debian. Just never encountered this before. I'm not even sure how to describe that. The first time I realized something was wrong when I tried to create a file with dd:
root@strych ~# dd if=/dev/zero of=1GFile -bs=10M count=100
dd: bad operand `-bs=10M'
I mean what, I've done that many times before! Then I noticed that some commands started to behave this way:
root@strych ~# ls --help
--help: No such file or directory
On the other hand...
root@strych ~# fish --help
fish - the friendly interactive shell
or
root@strych ~# apt-get --help
apt 0.8.6 dla i386 skompilowany Oct 4 2010 11:55:22
Usage: apt-get [options] command
apt-get [options] install
So what the hell is wrong with my shell? This is persistent with any type of access: both ssh and local (physical), it's the same when I use sh, fish, bash or whatever. It also doesn't matter which user I'm logged in with. I haven't changed .profiles or anything concerning terminal really, besides installing fish but even that was long before I realised this problem. Actually, I can't think of anything that I've done that could do this. What am I missing? The system is debian testing with kernel 2.6.32-5-686.

With ubuntu it was possible to clean packages with the commands
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean
All not necesseary packages were removed. Packages who didn't no longer has a dependency were removed.
Can this also be done under Debian?

I've read through your forums and done a bit of googling to see that an automated reboot at a certain time has something to do with cron jobsMy second task is then to run commands like the following command when the machine starts up again...screen -t s5 ./srcds_run -console -game cstrike -port 27025 +ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xx +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 11 -tickrate 100 -autoupdateit seems to me I need to edit the rd.local but when I open my file I don't really understand where I need to insert my command

I wanted to change authentication options in
1) /etc/pam.d directory files common-password, common-auth, common-account
2) /etc/login.defs - PASS* fields
I know the fields that need to be changed but what I could not find was
a) commands that change these options similar to useraddusermod and so on but those which can change system wide settings
b) API that can change these options (C API)
I have almost accepted that there in fact aren't such things. You have to manually update the files. I would prefer not though. So I am asking here as last attempt to find such commandsAPI. Please let me know if they are available.

I have a server in which I'm trying to install Debian into. There's no BIOS, only EFI boot. The vendor locked it down so there's no way to see it or get into it.
The Wheezy 7.8 netinst CD has EFI boot parameters and works on everything I throw it in, except this one server. Booting it up, the code doesn't see the EFI and boots into normal mode, negating every chance to install it (dozens upon dozens of failed installs).
During boot, I press the [TAB] at the Debian Linux installer menu and get the load parameters (/install.amd/vmlinuz vga=788 etc). What parameter can I add to this line to get it to run in UEFI mode so we can install it?
