Debian :: Grub Update - Can't Boot From Vmlinuz
Oct 2, 2010I have a Lenny inside a xp. I changed my installation and make a boot partition , a home directory, and a system directory. now I reinstall my xp and do this:
find /grub/stage1
root (hd0,6)
setup (hd0,6)
and grub menu found! but when I clicked on debian, can't boot and I have a message about can't boot from this vmlinuz ( or any thing similar!) , click on any key and then it come back to grub menu. my debian is on (hd0,9) and (hd0,6) is my boot partition.

Jan 10, 2010It is just a question regarding ISO and the lack of -o loop or function of busybox.One can custom the ISO of debian-installer and make a syslinux config file having : vmlinuz of one normally running installed Debian distro, and keep the initrd of the iso regular debian-installer.I think it may be conflicting the vmlinuz kernel version and the installer of initrd.I am learning, so it may be completely wrong or kernel panic.

I couldn't get web pages to load, IRC and ssh weren't connecting, and email wasn't downloading (I still use POP3). I didn't know what to use to check my internet connection. I did a ping, but I didn't know how to interpret the results. So without the internet, I was totally blind.
Are there documents anywhere which install with Debian which I can search offline when my internet connection dies?

So the idea is, take input.txt and search for each line in that file in another file, let's call it rules.txt.
So far, I've been able to do this, to search for individual strings:

Jan 13, 2011I'm using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10:04 64 bit, with kernel 2.6.32-24-generic, and want to use my printer Canon iP1880. I've tried looking on the internet and found: the use of 32 bits drivers for Linux on Linux 64-bit platforms. I've followed the procedure given but still failed to run the printer properly. There may still be the wrong procedure that I did, could you help me again to repeat what procedures I need to do, till now,I still don't know how to uninstalling that drivers? Are there other ways that may be successful so I can use my printer, if I practice?

Oct 16, 2009I have installed Centos 5.3 64 bit version and run yum update so the system is up to date. However, I have noticed the kernel version that is installed is:
uname -a
Linux elektra.chemresearch 2.6.18-164.el5 #1 SMP Thu Sep 3 03:28:30 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
and when attempting to install from ATrpm.net the nvidia driver I get this message:
yum install nvidia-graphics169.07 nvidia-graphics169.07-kmdl-`uname -r`
...
Missing Dependency: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5 is needed by package 1:nvidia-graphics169.07-kmdl-2.6.18-164.2.1.el5-169.07-94.el5.x86_64 (atrpms)
Now, yum says the kernel is up to date so how can I get the nvidia driver rpms to install? The entries in /boot are:
vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5
vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5
I have checked to make sure that the update repo is enabled. There were quite a few updates applied after the initial installation and the initial kernel was updated as the yum log indicates and also the entries in /boot.

Feb 20, 2010I have been learning Debian by using a virtual machine. After fine-tuning my installation procedure, I decided to copy that installation to my physical system. The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot.After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same.Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot simply because the initrd is created for the root partition location on the virtual machine. The initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.

Mar 10, 2010I down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.
Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?

Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application.What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.

May 17, 2010After installing debian 5.0.4 basic from first dvd, I extracted all other dvd images to hard disk and pointed /etc/apt/sources.list point to all these directories.
after refreshing using synaptic package manager, I got list of all 20,000+ packages, and did a
"apt-get -y install ......(all 20,000 names)". It failed due to some conflicts. So I used "--force-yes -f " option as well.
It went on for nearly two days to install everything. (in between due to power failure, something was done half way and was able to login to KDE boot option and see lots of software installed.)
After complete install - it shows a startup screen of Debian EDu - but fails to boot up.
Is there a way to install all softwares + all XWindow systems simultaneously?

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 1355LC that runs on an AMD Athlon XP processor. Also when I install Debian, will it recognise my Linksys WUSB 54 wireless device?
