Debian Multimedia :: Shortcuts For Changing Workspaces Don't Work
Dec 18, 2010
I installed a new login theme and I noticed that my shortcuts for changing workspaces don't work anymore. When I went to my keyboard shortcuts menu I found a completely different list of shortcuts, so I believe that I'm using a different Windows Manager than I've been using since installing Debian.
Guess I was wrong, I went into gconf-editor, went to metacity's keyboard shortcuts, and found mine disabled. I set them up again there and now they work again, even though they don't show up in the Keyboard Shortcuts menu.

I am running ubuntu 9.04, and need to change the number of workspaces to 1 from the command line. I am using this command in a script:gconftool --set -t int /apps/metacity/general/num_workspaces 1I can confirm in gconf-editor that the value is changed, but I can still scroll over to the second workspace with the mouse wheel

I have upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze. Aside from a few installation issues, the upgrade went relatively smooth. I had a problem with the graphics proprietary driver not being installed after the upgrade but I was able to solve the problem. I also successfully upgraded the filesystem from ext3 to ext4. One thing that did break on the upgrade is that now I do not have the capability to add and switch workspaces. I went into compizfusion and added for horizontal workspaces, but clicking on them does not switch to them. If I right-click on the preferences, it does not let me allow to add any more workspaces. I can change the number workspaces displayed through Genetal tab in compiz but the graphics appeared that they exist, but when I click or try to even switch between them it does not work. I was able to send a window to workspace two but then I lose all access to it. So it seems it might even exist but the applet in bottom right corner does not let me switch between them. Also draggin a window of the edge to another workspace does not work.

for a month or so I have had a problem with the way that a programme interacts with (I think) KDE. If I go away to a different vitual desktop/workspace, the programme in question locks up, using 100% of CPU and I have to kill it. I thought it was due to a buggy update and that it would get sorted in time. The prog is a windows prog running flawlessy under Crossover, at least it was until this started. If is put all my open windows on the same desktop,

I ran the command in my terminal:
Code:
$setxkbmap dvorak
And everything is fine. But when I go back to the US keyboard by typing:
Code:
$setxkbmap us
I cannot do Alt+left Arrow to go back in Nautilus or in Iceweasel. Alt+home (in Iceweasel) does not work.
Why won't they work anymore? They only work with the dvorak keybindings.

I'd like to change the keyboard shortcuts for switching between workspaces. I have compiz enabled. In Ubuntu I see entries for these keyboard shortcuts in the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences app. They are not there on my Fedora 14 system. How can I add them?

I have a Logitech G11 keyboard with additional function keys from G1 to G18 and I added those keys to my XKeysymDB and ~/.xmodmaprc accordingly. According to xev, all those keys are working properly, eg.:
$ xev
...
KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x3400001,
root 0x15d, subw 0x0, time 3518287, (167,-33), root:(1501,366),
state 0x10, keycode 175 (keysym 0x15000001, G1), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False
Now, if I try to bind any of those keys to global shortcuts in KDE I got a dialog telling: "The key you just pressed is not supported by Qt." these keys were working perfectly well in Lenny and KDE 3.5. I did some research, and it really seems that this is a some kind of "feature" in KDE 4.2 or Qt. So, is there any way to fix this easily in Squeeze without switching to Wheezy or even Sid?

There are these shortcuts in the GTK3 file chooser: [URL] ....
With the exception of "desktop" which I included in the red box by mistake, I don't want those shorcuts to be there. I've even deleted most of those folders from my home directory because I have no use for them, but the shortcuts remain even after the folders are gone.
How to remove/disable these shortcuts? And while I'm at it, I notice that it's not using my selected icon theme for those icons. Any way to make it use my choice of icon theme?

I had composed about 4 meticulous paragraphs and when I went to submit it all, the forum had logged me out and all the entire post got blown away. Don't have the time to do it again. Hope the abbreviated version makes sense.
Trying to write scripts to change keyboards on the fly (my wife is a luddite and either I automate it or she won't use the machine.)
Wrote a file named "ChangeKeyboardToUS" which reads
#!/bin/bash
# Change keyboard layout to standard US
chmod 755 setxkbmap us intl
All that syntax is as per [URL] ....
I put that file into my local bin (home/bj/bin) and in terminal add that to my path with the command:
export PATH=$PATH:/home/bj/bin.
When I run the script in a terminal (by typing "ChangeKeyboardToUS" I get "Permission Denied". Even running it as su, still get the same response.

I'm a user of Kicad, a schematic/printed circuit design suite. Kicad uses the extension '.mod' for its component module library files. When I view these files in Nautilus, (or one of my other file managers), they are displayed with a music note, and the file type is shown as 'Amiga SoundTracker audio'. I've never had such a file on any of my computers, and I'm fairly certain I never will. However, I have lots of Kicad module files on several computers. How can I make Nautilus report the correct filetype, or at least report an unknown filetype so my PCB libraries don't look like music files?
Here's what I've tried so far. I searched my whole system for files containing the string 'Amiga SoundTracker'. The only files that came up were three XML files: freedesktop.org.xml, mime.xml, and x-mod.xml.In each of these files I found one line that referred to both the extension '.mod' and the phrase 'Amiga AoundTracker'. (Also, in each case the line of code was the only one in its file that referred to the extension '.mod'). I commented out only this line in each of the three files, saved, and re-booted. After re-boot I confirmed that my changes to the files had persisted, yet my file managers still report my library files as 'Amiga SoundTracker'.Can I correct these filetypes, or am I out of luck?

I want to give some of my directories special folder icons. For example, I have a Projects directory and I noticed that there is a special 'projects' directory icon available in my icon theme; I think that it would be nice to use that icon instead of the default directory icon.Google informs me that the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs can be edited to give certain directories special properties, including special icons. However, all my changes to the file get reverted after restarting my computer. Is there a way to make changes to user-dirs.dirs permanent?

This is probably a stupid question, but is there any way to change the location where gphoto2 dumps the photos it downloads from the camera? Right now it just dumps the them in the current directory.
I've looked through the man page and nothing jumps out at me. The only thing I can think of doing is moving the downloaded photos to a new directory via a hook script, but before I go down that route, is there some kind of option I missed?

I changed my user name with the following commands:usermod -l $newname $oldnamegroupmod -n $newname $oldname usermod -d /home/$newname -m $newnameAlso replaced every instance of /home/$oldname ith /home/$newname in ~/.config.Now gdm3 hangs with a black screen and wristwatch icon. (I can move the icon with the mouse.) This worked fine with gdm. I've looked for gdm3 files that have /home/$oldname in my home and in /etc and couldn't find anything significant.Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this or where to look? For now, I've disabled gdm3, and I'm using startx. This is an installation in virtualbox. I just tried using ctrl-alt-F1, but it dropped me to console in the host system. (Nice rush of adrenaline came with that.)
The only errors in Xorg.0.log are there even with a successful startx. (EE) Failed to load module "xboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directoryCouple more bits of relevant information - this was a live-build that I installed using refractainstaller. I also changed /etc/inittab to disable auto-login. Here are the changes, original lines commented out, new lines look like the inittab in my regular squeeze install, but I don't think this is the problem (see below.)
#1:2345:respawn:/bin/login -f user </dev/tty1 >/dev/tty1 2>&1
#2:23:respawn:/bin/login -f user </dev/tty2 >/dev/tty2 2>&1
#3:23:respawn:/bin/login -f user </dev/tty3 >/dev/tty3 2>&1

I would like to set the default text editor in Xfce to gedit. The only solution that I found on Google was to right click on a given text file, select 'open with other application', sleect gedit, and make sure that the "use as default kind" button is checked. Unfortunately this only works for text files with the same extension as the original file. Is there a way of setting every text file to open with gedit by default that doesn't involve repeating this exercise for every possible text file extension (.c, .py, .h, .hs, etc.)?

Basically the Alt-Left and Alt-Right shortcuts in my Nautilus don't work. The Backspace shortcut does work. Reason I am needing them is that I have bound my mouse side keys to them for easier browsing but the original shortcuts don't work. I checked Compiz shortcuts, but those two are not used there (at least I didn't find them).
Any ideas on the subject would be great. Below is some info:
Linux: Debian 5.0.4
Kernel version: 2.6.26-2-686
Nautilus version: 2.20.0
Gnome version: 2.22.3

Recently I installed MPlayer with its default gui and its interfaces SMPlayer and GnomeMPlayer. When I'm using GnomeMPlayer it responds to multimedia keys as configured in Gnome shortcuts, even if it's minimized or running in another virtual desktop. But it doesn't happen to the other two gui's mentioned above. I have also noticed that native Gnome applications or with Gnome support like Banshee and Rhythmbox rspond to multimedia keys even when the gui is closed and they are running only in the system tray. But it never occurs in non-Gnome applications like VLC, MPlayer and others. Jetaudio wich responds to these keys in MS Windows running under Wine doesn't even recognize them.
So I came to the conclusion that only native Gnome applications or with Gnome support recognize multimedia keys because, as it seems, they receive the signal from Gnome configurations. Others applications doesn't do so. Here is my question: Is there some way to make all applications recognize the configuration of Gnome multimedia keys shortcuts? (Of course it would not be fine if they recognized ALL Gnome shortcuts because they could conflict with shortcuts from another applications. The idela would be that they recognize ONLY Gnome multimedia shortcuts.)

1. I open an application e.g. terminal
2. I close the application's window
3. Keyboard shortcuts do not work at all and if I want them back working, I have to click on the desktop's background I bet it has something to do with focus or compiz settings, because I've already had some problems with those in Unity. Now I'm on the "classic" ubuntu desktop. It didn't happen before upgrade..

I've started using the keyboard shortcuts in Linux Mint with the Gnome desktop, and I've found that they don't work unless I first click on the desktop with the mouse.
The problem occurs if I start with no application windows open, then open a single application, and later close it leaving an empty desktop. If any other app windows are open the keyboard shortcuts still work. But if there are no other windows open the shortcuts fail to work until I click on the desktop. It's as though the system fails to return the input focus to the desktop when the last remaining app window is closed.
