OpenSUSE :: Changing Desktops/workspaces Freezes App?

Feb 2, 2011

for a month or so I have had a problem with the way that a programme interacts with (I think) KDE. If I go away to a different vitual desktop/workspace, the programme in question locks up, using 100% of CPU and I have to kill it. I thought it was due to a buggy update and that it would get sorted in time. The prog is a windows prog running flawlessy under Crossover, at least it was until this started. If is put all my open windows on the same desktop,

OpenSUSE :: KDE Freezes When Changing Focus?

May 25, 2011

KDE has been randomly freezing/stalling when changing window focus, opening, or closing programs. It does not seem to be restricted to any particular programs. If I change focus by clicking in a new window, often, when the system comes out of it's frozen state, the mouse is still in a button down state even though I've released the click. No errors are generated in /var/log/messages or in ~/.xsession-errors.I'm running 11.3 and here's the output of uname -a:

Code:

Debian Multimedia :: Shortcuts For Changing Workspaces Don't Work

Dec 18, 2010

I installed a new login theme and I noticed that my shortcuts for changing workspaces don't work anymore. When I went to my keyboard shortcuts menu I found a completely different list of shortcuts, so I believe that I'm using a different Windows Manager than I've been using since installing Debian.

Guess I was wrong, I went into gconf-editor, went to metacity's keyboard shortcuts, and found mine disabled. I set them up again there and now they work again, even though they don't show up in the Keyboard Shortcuts menu.

Ubuntu :: Turn Off Touchpad Scrolling For Changing Between Desktops?

Apr 24, 2011

Using Lubuntu 10.10 on a laptop with a Synaptics touchpad. Moving the finger along the right edge of the touchpad acts as a scroll wheel. If the cursor is not in any app window but is in open desktop area - then this scrolling action will transport one to a different desktop. I have two desktops enabled so by moving the the finger along the side up/down I go from Desktop1 to Desktop2 and back.

This deadly for me and causing much hair pulling. I am in the middle of doing something and desktop will change. No matter how careful I am this eventually happens. So for the sake of sanity I have only one desktop.I'd like multiple desktops but I need to turn-off this scrolling feature. I've seen some hacks in config files but they either don't work or have side effects. I want to keep the scrolling in windows were the touchpad scrolling really helps. I just want to turn-off the scrolling between desktops only

OpenSUSE :: Get Plasma Netbook Workspaces In 11.3?

Jul 22, 2010

I've been fooling around with Gnome-Shell for a while now, which fits nicely on my small-screened (12") laptop, but the openSUSE 11.3 version has proven less-than-stable for me. Now I am interested in the Plasma Netbook Workspaces, which looks intriguing... The question is, [ 1 ] to install it (which I can do from Plasma Netbook Workspace - openSUSE, but the documentation is rather sparce), do I need to run MeeGo, or can I take a stock installation of openSUSE?

I don't have much luck installing openSUSE via DVD (or DVD image via USB) so I am thinking of installing via the KDE Live CD and then install the Plasma Netbook Workspace. This is basically how I installed Gnome-Shell (install from the Gnome Live CD, then install Gnome-Shell). Once it is installed, [ 2 ] how do I turn it on? Will it be an option in the login screen? I'll admit, though, I am more of a Gnome guy, but going to Gnome-Shell may be a half-step towards something like this.

Apr 8, 2010

I am hoping I have a simple one to solve here! I've been looking around online, trying to find out how to configure multiple desktops to have their own taskbar. Most of my results suggest that I should be able to click on the menu, choose favorites, and go to Configure Desktop. In the new window, I should see a taskbar section on the left hand side?I am running OpenSUSE 11.2 on two machines and neither of them have this option. I just wanted to see if somebody knows where I can find the window to configure separate taskbars for each desktop?

I use an MS mouse/keyboard combo model 6000 (ver. 2) and for the most part they work great, that is except for a problem with the mouse wheel scrolling through the desktops if the cursor is on a desktop. If the cursor is in/on a window it scrolls through the window as normal.t also scrolls through the desktops if I "side click" the mouse wheel as well. I've run sax2 and the mouse moduledoesn't even appear but my Wacom tablet settings do. Very perplexing to say the least.

Ubuntu :: Freezes Mouse After Changing A Tab (with Ctrl+tab, Alt+#) Or Closing It (ctrl+w)?

Nov 11, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and already am really annoyed by Firefox, which freezes my mouse after changing a tab (with ctrl+tab, alt+#) or closing it (ctrl+w). After about one second, i can continue working as usual. Changing Tabs by just clicking on one does not freeze anything...Maybe some of you would think now if I am crazy because of complaining about such a little thing, but it is really annoying if you are used to work fluently with ff.Edit:I today noticed, that not only shortcuts in firefox, but all Hotkeys freeze my mouse for a second. For examle ctrl+c, ctrl+v, super+e or anything else.Do you have any Idea what causes this behaviour? Reinstalling ubuntu didn't change anything

OpenSUSE :: Map "Present Windows - All Desktops" Action Which Is Invoked By Activating The Top Left Corner Of Active Screens Via A Keyboard Shortcut?

Aug 25, 2010

Is it possible to map the same "Present Windows - All Desktops" action which is invoked by activating the top left corner of active screens via a keyboard shortcut? I basically want to ape OSX and have an expose-like button, the screen edge works fine for now, but I would love a keyboard shortcut also. Is it possible? Also, when I set up a custom keyboard shortcut to run yast, I initially tried using the same command from the KDE menu: /usr/bin/xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2

However, when I use the keyboard shortcut to launch this command, I get problems when trying to use zypper after the initial launch using the keyboard shortcut(from yast GUI or CLI). The error basically states another instance of yast2 already exists. The problem is only with the app/repo management modules though; for instance I can launch yast (using keyboard shortcut or start menu) and access hardware info, sudo users etc, I just can't access software/repo management stuff. Even when I kill the offending PID from the CLI I still get the error and have to restart the box to rectify it proper. So I changed the keyboard shortcut command to : /usr/bin/kdesu /sbin/yast2

and this seems to have resolved the problem. My second question is what is the difference between the two in this particular instance and why does one cause problems (xdg-su) and the other does not (kdesu).

Ubuntu :: Alt-Tab And Workspaces Not Working

Oct 11, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. I've got access to both the Netbook Edition and the Desktop Edition, so I tried booting into the Desktop Edition since I prefer to use this.

Within it, I cannot use Alt-Tab to move between multiple windows. I don't have access to moving between workspaces; rather weirdly, I can move a window to a different workspace by right clicking on the application and selecting to move it to a different workspace but I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-Right or Left to move between workspaces, nor can I use Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Left or Right to move a window from one workspace to another.

I have checked the Keyboard Shortcuts under the System->Preferences side. Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Right/Left and Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Right/Left are all set as the commands for Moving between Windows using the popup window, moving to the right/left workspace and moving a window to the right/left workspace respectively.

I've seen a lot of people saying that they have problems when they've got compiz installed and alt-tab causes problems with this, but I don't have compiz installed.

Since I used sudo apt-get upgrade -d from my old 10.04 Netbook Edition, am I missing packages to correctly run the Desktop Edition?

Note: Within the Netbook Edition, I can use multiple workspaces and Alt-Tab does work, but the UI is very slow and causes the system to lag whenever I open an application.
