I'd like to change the keyboard shortcuts for switching between workspaces. I have compiz enabled. In Ubuntu I see entries for these keyboard shortcuts in the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences app. They are not there on my Fedora 14 system. How can I add them?

I generally use gnome but with latest hulla-boo about graphics tempted me to check kde. where i found following problem to configure:
1) no keyboard shortcut to launch a terminal
2) my laptops dedicated volume control is not working
3) gnome package manager is not there, though i can use yum
I am trying to start a script via a keyboard shortcut.The trouble is, it runs fine when i start it from the terminal, either by opening a terminal and starting it there or by "double-click", but when I use the shortcut it loads, but doesn't work properly. This is probably because it asks for user input, which would be put in the terminal window.Is there a way to start a script in a terminal window by default?

If I go away to a different vitual desktop/workspace, the programme in question locks up, using 100% of CPU and I have to kill it. View 9 Replies View RelatedIf I change the keyboard shortcut for Open a Terminal in System > Preferences it will not stay in there if i log-out or reboot. When i log back in the shortcut is set to disabled, and I have tried different key combos and they give the same result. I am using Fedora 14 btw and hopefully you guys know of a solution. I tried making a custom command also using the gnome-terminal command but the terminal launches with a different directory other than my home directory when using that method.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a new login theme and I noticed that my shortcuts for changing workspaces don't work anymore. When I went to my keyboard shortcuts menu I found a completely different list of shortcuts, so I believe that I'm using a different Windows Manager than I've been using since installing Debian.
Guess I was wrong, I went into gconf-editor, went to metacity's keyboard shortcuts, and found mine disabled. I set them up again there and now they work again, even though they don't show up in the Keyboard Shortcuts menu.
is everytime i reboot , my keyboard is reset to USA. im in canada & it pisses me off each time i need to change it also.all my options on EMESENE is the same issue always RESET.it's like if nothing keeps the changes once rebooted.

How can I change my audio output (and input) from one device to another?
(Using a Sound Blaster and USB Headphones)
Changing settings in Phonon is a hassle, and it still won't change the sound immediately for the apps... Is there a quick way to just disable one device and enable the other, without having to restart the apps that use them? (For instance, right now Skype and my browser are outputting to headphones and amarok to my speakers - one enabled device that receives everything, bang! output for everything to another device and the first device is having a nap)
I can't see any settings in KMix to facilitate such a change...
what I can do to change sound cards quickly and easily?
I recall doing this in seconds in Ubuntu via their mixer, so would it be similar if I ditched KDE in favor of Gnome??

View 3 Replies View RelatedA few months ago I upgraded one of my Ubuntu boxes to 10.04.1 and haven't been able to switch keyboard layouts ever since. I have US and Russian Phonetic keyboards and used to be able to switch between them using the keyboard switching panel applet back when I was using Karmic Koala. Now the applet is gone and not even available in the list of applets.
I understand the applet has been removed in the new Ubuntu. But why? And what other means of switching keyboard layouts are available now?
The trouble is that I have never been able to switch layouts without the applet -- none of the keyboard shortcuts I tried under Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts ever worked in any version of Ubuntu. Now I can't even test the Russian layout inside the Layouts tab, i.e. when I select Russian Phonetic and type something in the test box below I keep getting US layout characters.
I recently switched from GNOME to xfce, and I can't get working a simple keyboard shortcut to ssh to another machine.
In GNOME, I made a launcher (which gnome-do found); the first time I ran the launcher I'd get an X11 popup asking for by ssh passphrase, and then it would be saved for the rest of the GNOME session, making logins nice and fast.
In xfce, a similar launcher opens a new xfce4-terminal, which asks for the passphrase every time. I made a keyboard shortcut to "ssh -X me@server" -- this open an X11 popup for the passphrase, but no terminal, because there is no "run in terminal" option for keyboard shortcuts.
I'd be okay with running "ssh-add" at every login, but it has to be system-wide, rather than attached to one terminal instance. Passphraseless ssh is an options but a creepy one.

I successfully add a keyboard shorcut to launch konsole manually with khotkeys, but i don't know what command to bind to move to right, left, up, down desktops like in ubuntu.
For example in ubuntu there is ctrl+alt+arrow and ctrl+alt+shift+arrow to move through workspaces and move windows between them. Not so in kubuntu.
I have three keyboard layouts: en, ru and ua. Now I switch between layouts by pressing Ctrl+Shift (en->ru->ua->en->ru...). Here is part of my xorg.conf

CapsLock - switch to en
CapsLock+Shift - switch to ru

I've read an xkb manuals and some articles about it but can't understand how I can setup xkb for non cyclic switching.
I am logging into an Ubuntu 8.04 machine using ssh, so I use a console. The keyboard layout is US-standard, obvioulsy. However, I would like to use french-canadian keyboard layout. And I don't know at all how to switch it in console. Give me Gnome or KDE, and we're done. But this is console only. I guess it has to do with the loadkeys command. Ok. I retrieved from the web a file cf.map.gz. Maybe ubuntu requires a different kind of file? Using "locate cf.map" I get nothing, except the file I have downloaded. Any package I should demand to be installed? (if yes, what do I do once they are in?) I tried using both the .gz and uncompressed files.

They tell us about some program, console-data, using root privileges. Intriguing, but I am only a user, and do not have any root privileges. The system admin. has never used another keyboard layout, and knows even less than I on this matter. I tried similar stuff on my openSUSE at home, on a newly created experimental account, and I am equally unable to change within the console the keyboard layout (similar error messages).
I'm a huge keyboard shortcut fan. I can't stand mice. So this is a big one for me.
My Alt+F10 (maximize) and Alt+F9 (minimize) keyboard shortcuts work just fine. I read everywhere (i.e., [URL]) that the Alt+F5 combo should unmaximize a maximized window. But it's not working. Can't find anything that says Debian excludes that combo.
Is this to be expected or is something amiss? I think its meant to be a default shortcut, so don't want to start playing around with customizations prematurely.
Searched through the forum, couldn't find anything under the following search terms: Alt F5; Alt+F5: Alt +F5: Alt-F5: maximize: unmaximize. Did I miss the magic string?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI frequently need to take screenshots of a game (flash-based, running inside a browser), in particular it's statistics screen which is shown when I hold the TAB key. The problem is, when I take a screenshot, either by pressing PrintScreen key or by pressing a custom-defined shortcut, the game responds to this keypress and hides its statistics screen, so the screenshot doesn't contain the information I need.I figured out how to overcome this using a custom application launcher icon; but this requires using the mouse which is rather inconvenient.define a shortcut that wouldn't be processed by the active application? Or maybe there's some screenshot utility that does this out of the box?

The default AL+SHIFT+K switches from EN to second one and after that it (obviously) doesn't work. saw a few posts (http://www.linux-archive.org/gentoo-...alt-shift.html), but the flag is not changing in the tray.I also tried to go thru "Keyboard shortcuts", but for whatever reason, it doesn't want to accept the combination of "alt+shift" and expects another key ( i guess).I'm using Centos 5.2 and the the keyboard model is "MS natural keyboard pro" with US and two Cyrillic layouts - one of them is phonetic.

I can switch between the layouts, as fbxkb indicates, but instead of being able to type in the said letters, I get the punctuation marks you would normally get on a US keyboard.Yes, I have restarted after configuring the file mentioned above, and yes, I was able to use this layout properly on my last CrunchBang install (which I had to wipe and reinstall unfortunately).I'm on CrunchBang Linux, with Debian unstable repos.
I had debian 7 with GNOM,XFCE and LXDE woking fine. After I upgraded it to debian 8 (the DE mentioned also upgraded to e newer versions) I started having problems with switching between US and RU keyboard layouts. It now behaves as if I have two US layouts and one RU, so when I press CTRL+SHIFT several times the layout changes as follows: US-RU-US-US-RU-US-US-RU etc.
This happens in all the three DEs installed. If I exit a DE using CTRL+ALT+F1 to the command line the layout switches normally. So I guess something wrons is with DEs.
