Ubuntu 10.10 x64 worked out of the box for me but there is one irritating issue.
I have Xonar DS(Oxygen HD Audio) with analogue 2.1 speakers and spdif passthrough to nvidia GTX260 hdmi output for my tv.
It makes random cracking noise on tv unless something is played, no matter on analogue or digital output, then is noiseless.
Alsa 1.0.23, kernel 2.6.35
I am using the Creative X-Fi Surround sound card and a Samsung 5.1 Home Theater system. When I play back MP3s, or system sounds are played, the beginning of the audio is cut off. The nature of the cut-off is that audio fades in instead of just starting. It's only the fraction of a second, but whenever sound is played after a silence (i.e. also in songs that have short silent breaks, like Roxette's "The Look"), the beginning of the audio quickly fades in. So in "The Look", instead of playing
Na na na na na, na na na na na, na na na na na na she's got the look
It plays:

Any ideas what is causing this? I already turned off the suspend option for Pulse audio, but it happens whether I use Pulse or ALSA for output.
Recently i put a DAC connected to the CL X-FI board via the SPDIF interface. Result is i can listen only one channel, the left one (hedaphone) while using the xmms, audacious.
The thing is that i'm able to listen both channels if i use the VLC configured with the same output, that is hw:2,4.

I've just brought a Asus Xonar DG and put it in my case - and found out that it's about the only card that is not easy to get working.I've updated my ALSA to 1.0.24 using this how-to. Then I reinstalled pulse with all the utilities and got it to look like working, with one problem only: no sound is output.I use Rythmbox for playback. In pavucontrol the bar below the soundcard output indicates that there's something playing, but no sound gets to my headphones. Has anyone encountered that? I've tried nearly all combinations of setting the output devices in various places like Sound settings and pavucontrol, but none worked.

It appears to work correctly in Kubuntu 10.10 as when I open up Sound and Video configuration, I can see it listed correctly and when I hit "Test", I get the annoying Ubuntu tinkle-plonk. But no application I use seems willing to use it. In fact, both Optical Outs (the motherboard's and the soundcards) are working fine when I try playing a test sound from this panel, but neither seems to be output to by VLC, Spotify or anything else I've tried.
I have set the entry "Xonar D2X Multichannel (IEC958 (S/PDIF)) Digital Audio Output to the preferred option for all output. Silence.
How do I convince VLC, Spotify et al, that the card really is there and they're really, really welcome to use it?
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 x32, and after some research I haven't succeed getting my soundcard to work.Soundcard is detected but not sound comming from speakers.This is what aplay -l says:

It partially works but I got a couple of issues (using 10.04 x86-64). I use it with a Stereo headphones and a mic.
1) It only outputs in 7.1/5.1 mode and only on the left headphone. If I reselect 7.1/5.1 while an audio stream is playing then I get stereo back. I've checked with Ubuntu 10.10 live CD and apparently the left channel is mapped to front, while the right is mapped to sub-woofer. How can I fix this?
2) The mic doesn't work. When I select the Xonar D1, I can choose between Analog Input, Analog Line In and Analog Microphone. When I switch between those I can hear a click coming from my pc, as if something HW is switching. I tried playing around with alsamixer but it doesn't work. Any idea how to make the mic work?
I have just installed squeeze 6.0.2 amd64 and noticed when I use k3b to burn/verify a disc, when it has finished burning the media it plays a sound, and rather sound is played which sounds very crackly/muffled.I do not remember this on ubuntu, and I cannot say for sure but I dont recall this happening on squeeze 6.0.1.
Sound plays perfectly in all other applications, no problems whatsoever.This is not a big deal, I just dont remember this happening. For months it was perfect. Simultaneous sound from both SPDIF and computer speakers. Today suddenly out of the blue no sound in SPDIF. If I click Test in KDE System Settings for SPDIF devivce that sound is played, so, I tried putting this device at the top, then sound comes only from SPDIF but not from the speakers!
God, why in Linux something perfect breaks into thousand pieces without any seemingly changes...
I'm trying to get AC3/DTS passthrough working with my HTPC in which I'm using the onboard sound from an nForce 4-based motherboard. I've tested it in Win7 to check that all the connections etc are set up correctly and it works perfectly there. However under Kubuntu I can only get 2ch PCM sound to work through the SPDIF connection. Any DTS/DD sources just result in silence.If I go into Multimedia settings in the System Settings panel, the SPDIF device that shows up there (once I enable advanced devices) produces no sound with the Test button. I can hear a click as the device is activated but no sound is produced. I can also see that a digital signal is making it to my receiver as it has an icon which lights up when it locks onto a signal.Has anyone had success with SPDIF passthrough in 9.10? I've tried twiddling all the settings in Kmix relate to IEC and also tried following the Alsa wiki on digital passthrough without any success.

I just did an install on a new partition to upgrade my htpc. I'm unable to get any sound over SPDIF working. I just installed Ubuntu Lucid beta 2 on my desktop, and I can't seem to get the sound to work. I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 card and the motherboard has built-in sound, but ubuntu doesn't recognize either of them. The only hardware option I have in my sound preferences is for SPDIF, and thats the only thing that shows up in alsamixer as well.
View 1 Replies View RelatedCurrently using an Asrock ION 330 with an SPDIF output and running 10.04It works as stereo but can't get the system to run as surround sound and everything shows as 2 channels only.The hardware itself supports it fine as it works under windows 7 without issues so it has to be a config issue somewhere.I have tried everything I can find via google including upgrading the alsa drivers but so far there has been no change.

After a while I was able some how to get it to work and but my headphones would no longer output sound so in an effort to get sound back to the headphones I maanged to ruin the the settings for the spdif.My question is how can I get spdif back and switch between headphones and spdif.I there no way to figure it out how do I purge every file that has to do with sound and recompile. ( THe comprehensive sound guide showed how to purge the alsa utils but that didnt work if someone know why please let me know and if you could explain.)

I can get audio output on the analog channels but what I'd really like is output on the SPDIF (optical, digital) channel so that I can have better sound quality on my home theater system. What I've tried...-I followed the sound troubleshooting guide.-I tried the 6 stack/3 stack approach suggested on the ALSA website.-Tried compiling and installing the latest version of alsa.-Tried installing the development drivers for alsa that are put out by the ubuntu community.

The audio from the PC comes through ok when listening to music and movies. But unfortunately I can figure out how to enable the audio passthrough from my Tv so that the audio comes out of my theatre kit. In Sound Preferences, the hardware is set to 1 Output / 1 Input [Digital Stereo (IEC95 Output + Digital Stereo (IEC95 Input]. When I click on the audio tab, the Input Volume is at 100% and the Input Level is moving in conjunction with the audio coming from the Tv.
I saw it mentioned in another thread to install Gnome Alsa Mixer which I've done, it seeems to identify the audio chipset as Realtek ALC882, the motherboard is an Abit AB9 Pro. Hopefully I'm missing some config somewhere or there a box I should be ticking but I just can't find it.
I noticed that after compiling 2.6.35.4 that gnome-alsamixer has two new options for my ASUS XONAR D2X: "Dac Filter" and "Dac Oversampling", (I turned them both on and off and didn't notice any difference)

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if old revisions of KDE's oxygen theme are available. Specifically I am looking for the theme that shipped with KDE 4.1 (Kubuntu 8.10), and more particularly I am interested in the kicker theme. I attached a screenshot to show you what I mean. I virtualized Kubuntu 8.10 and grabbed all the themes from /usr/share/kde(4?)/aps/desktopthemes/ and transfered them to my main install, which is using kde 4.4.3, but themes where light colored (i.e. the kicker was light gray and didn't look anything like they did in KDE 4.1).
I don't think it is a compatibility issue because I compared the 4.1 themes with the 4.4 themes and they had the same directory structure and config file format (and the Elegance theme looked the same). So in short, does anyone know where I can download the Oxygen theme from KDE 4.1, or if there is something that I am doing wrong making the old version light colored on KDE 4.4?

Specifically, the window resize icons and the drag and drop (move) icon. All other icons are displayed correctly. For the missing icons, it seems to fall back to the default ugly black x cursors. Has anybody else seen this, or have I installed these cursors incorrectly? Note I want to do this system wide so I have the same cursor even in my sudoed apps.
I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).
I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.
Hence I am looking at Gnome.
I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.

Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.
Today I installed KDE 4.6.3. (OpenSuse 11.4). With this version a modified oxygen icon set was installed. Some icons, e.g. folders, are looking very ugly. They are looking a little bit like Tango icons. This mixture of original oxygen icons and the "tango-oxgygen" ones looks very inconsistent. You can repair this by installing the KDE 4.6.0 oxygen icon set (oxygen-icon-theme, oxygen-icon-theme-scalable) coming with OpenSuse 11.4. Yast is showing some problems regarding KDE 4.6.3. you can ignore them.
