I just updated Nvidia driver with sgfxi to 352.30 (Debian testing), and X doesn't load.
My current display manager is sddm, used with KDE Plasma 5. Is it a known issue? I couldn't find any sensible error messages in Xorg logs.
I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. Right now I'm playing Eternal Lands on the Linux side. Looking to spend $100-$150 on a new card.I have a Core2Duo Wolfdale 3.0, with 2ghz ram and run Lucid 32bit. Also run windows Vista64Ultimate on dual boot (rarely).
I would love to buy a new ATI 5770 or 5830, ATI budget cards seem to be much better for the buck over budget Nvidia cards, but I'm concerned with ATI drivers and long term with Ubuntu.On the Nvidia side I'm considering the GTS 250. The only advantage I can find is lower power consumption with Nvidia and Ubuntu has always preferred Nvidia over ATI, as far as working drivers go.As Far as Ubuntu and Lucid is concerned, which way is best, ATI or Nvidia? Has anything changed with ATI support, that could make theor cards more compatible now and in the future?
I tried to install drivers for my GeForce GT 630M graphic card. At first, I just installed nvidia-detect and there was a suggestion to install nvidia-driver:

I'm still getting used to the system. I've been able to install a couple of packages like Disk Manager and Firefox, and was able to mount my ntfs drive. I've only learned some basic terminal commands, but I'm managing ok so far. That is until I looked into what was involved in installing the video drivers I need for my Nvidia 8400 GS card. (ouch!) I'm trying to follow the guide here: [URL] but I've run into a snag in the 'Overview' part: "0. Make sure APT has non-free and contrib sources (consult the sources.list(5) man page for help on doing this) " The link provided [URL] is dead. With only a basic understanding (next to none) of what the sources.list is for, I'm unsure how to fulfill step 0.
View 9 Replies View RelatedProblem: computer and graphics card had been running for months without problem. For some reason, last night, things locked up...wouldn't think it's related, but happened when I noticed I was locked out of creating new folders on my usb attached My Book storage drive. So, from terminal I tried to sudo change permissions to read/write. Everything locked up. Now, every time I reboot it states needing to use low graphics mode "Screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly."
When I check the error log I see: "(EE) Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module.."(EE) NVIDIA(0): ***Aborting* Screens found but none have a usable configuration. Fatal Server Error - no screens found"
If I try to then start in safe low graphics mode or restart X, I get the Ubuntu splash screen with the 5 dots that turn red to show progress...but nothing ever happens. I can switch to VT 1, login at command line, and type "startx" and then the graphical desktop loads just fine. Video playback, etc. is perfect and fine - not in low graphics mode at all. System seems totally normal.
However, I have to go through these steps each time I reboot. Also, I noticed that when I try to boot from Ubuntu Live CD I can't. I get as far as picking English as a language, then screen goes blank and goes to power saving mode (no signal being sent). This greatly concerns me as even though I have a work around for now - getting to command line then startx'ing - if I ever needed to reinstall from the CD, it seems I can't.
Some info on my pc:Running 10.04 on Compaq Presario SR1950NX AMD 64 GeForce 6150 LE/PCI/SSE2/3DNow! <- believe built onto motherboard on what I can do to fix? Is this a sign that something is wrong with my video card?
Laptop with Nvidia integrated GO 6100. Now stuck in low graphics mode.

"Hardware Drivers" reports that Nvidia drivers version 173 are activated at the moment, but not in use. Got the same report from the 185s. 'nvidia-xconfig' produced no results.
Not sure where to go from here. Please assist.
On a positive note, my onboard Broadcom wireless is working without ndiswrapper.
I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10.SSH, samba, LAMP server, etc etc etc are now failing to start when the os boots. I can start all of these services manually but is a bit of an annoyance.Maybe something simple but am not sure where to look to fix this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a dual monitor system with my Dell E7450 laptop with Debian Stretch and KDE 4.14.2. The graphic card is a Intel HD5500 with xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.99.917-2. The first time I simply connected the HDMI plug, it recognized the monitor and it automagically set up the extended dual monitor. Then I unplugged the HDMI and KDE froze. Now every time I plug in the second monitor the laptop monitor goes black, the desktop goes on the external monitor and the mouse cursor moves only vertically along the leftmost edge of the monitor.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I'm building a custom kernel cuz I want the fbcondecor patch in my kernel. I use the same .config that 2.6.32 debian kernel package comes with. This kernel runs perfectly. I pass --initrd to make-kpkg when building the package but no initrd is built when I install it so I have to make it using "mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.33 2.6.33" to get it to boot. Now when I try to build the nvidia drivers it complains it can't find the source. I did build kernel_headers and installed them also the source is in /usr/src/linux. I also tried to specify the path by passing --kernel-source-path= to the nvidia script but no change. What is going on? I've done this fifty times before and never had any problems. Has there been some changes to how debian kernel packages are built? EDIT: Just thought I'd add some info about the steps I took.

Installed kdeconnect from Stretch repo, and KDE Connect from F-Droid on my phone, but I don't know how to get this working. No KDE Connect options anywhere in System Settings (I also search there for "connect" and don't find anything related to KDE Connect). There's no GUI anywhere, no Plasma 5 widgets, nothing. Only "kdeconnect-cli", which when I enter "kdeconnect-cli -l" (list devices) I get

Got a problem with the plasma network management widget. Let's say I connect to a wireless network at my office called "Network A". I then go home and try connecting to my wireless network, "Network B". Assume each has WEP encryption. When I click on my home network, the wallet-manager pops up first. I enter my password. I then see that instead of adding a new network, it has "Network A" selected for editing. This happens every single time. What is going on here? I don't want a bunch of posts naming WICD either. I want to use the plasma widget because I like it. So what's up with it overwriting other network connections when you try adding a new one?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have just installed squeeze 6.0.2 amd64 and noticed when I use k3b to burn/verify a disc, when it has finished burning the media it plays a sound, and rather sound is played which sounds very crackly/muffled.I do not remember this on ubuntu, and I cannot say for sure but I dont recall this happening on squeeze 6.0.1.
Sound plays perfectly in all other applications, no problems whatsoever.This is not a big deal, I just dont remember this happening. I know this isnt the most detailed posting but does anyone have any idea what this could be? I even tried to reinstall k3b through synaptics and the problem still persists.
After installing the latest upgrades in Testing, KDE will no longer start. After logging in, the progress bar reaches about 80% and then stops. At this point the system is unresponsive, and I have to switch to another VT to reboot.
For the moment I'm using XFCE.
I recently installed Firefox 3.6 on Debian Squeeze. Everything went smoothly, but Firefox looks weird. The interface reminds me of Windows 98 and anytime I scroll through the menus the highlighter is grey and it makes things awfully hard to read. I'm not sure what could be wrong but I'm hoping someone here I'm not sure how to insert small images as url links so I'll just post links to screenshots I took for reference.[URL]Oh, and one other problem I recently discovered, flash doesn't seem to work. It works just fine in Iceweasel but I am told I have to install it in Firefox. I installed libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins but that doesn't seem to have helped. Come to think of it, it probably wouldn't since it's probably the 32-bit version I got from their site, I run on 64 bit.
View 13 Replies View RelatedIt's been mentioned several times in this forum already that downgrading to NVIDIA driver version 256.53 can solve random-seeming plasma crashes (the error dialog box usually mentions a "floating point error").So, I upgraded openSUSE 11.3 to KDE 4.5.5 today and couldn't add a clock - any clock - to my desktop or panel without a plasma crash. I had been using the latest NVIDIA kernel modules (v260.19) from the openSUSE NVIDIA repo. I uninstalled them, installed the gcc, make, and kernel-devel packages, and manually installed the latest NVIDIA driver (270.18). No joy; same crash. So I installed version 256.53. And...it solved the problem.
So, to underscore the point, if you have a recent NVIDIA card and you're having random plasma widget crashes, try downgrading your NVIDIA driver.
I am using an Nvidia GeForce FX5200 card and nvidia hasn't released a driver that seems to work with it in Fedora 13 yet.. However, I decided to do an install of F13 and use the nouveau drivers until Nvidia updates their drivers, however, the nouveau drivers don't work worth a crap with my card I did a fresh install and then ran a yum update. What I am seeing is after a few minutes, all the icons disappear, no fonts, and nouveau starts throwing errors to my message log. Here are the messages I get:

When I activate the nvidia and restart, the desktop disappears. I have tried re-installing Ubuntu and mint and it keep happening. The computer is has a single core amd athlon 64, 1.5gb's of ram and a nvidia 7300gs card.

Downloaded th latest driver for my GeForce 7300 GS vidio card, driver package NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.12.run
Used "method # 2 as described in HOW TO,as it worked perfectly in the past on Lenny. Only syntax I changed was instead of gdm I typed gdm3 as it appears that is the new name for gnome in Squeeze.

Now the trouble showed up, Unfortunatly I can only go off my memory. A question was asked stating that something did not match, it needed a 3 and the driver had a 4 version or somethng of this sort. then it asked if I new what I was doing (and I lied) and selected yes. And whammo, it didn't work. (This question was asked when i did in Lenny and it is working perfectly still on that system). I now can not boot to GUI, I notice when system boots it starts in "S" mode although I select normal boot from grub2.
Not too bad if I got to reinstall as little is on the system. I just want to know what I am missing on the instalation deal or should I be going about this difrently with Squeeze.
I had a my system running KDE4 and my Hard drive crashed. I ahve replaced it with a RAID 1 configuration and reloaded my data and such. However I did not use sid repos so I only have KDE3.5 installed. The big thing I hated about KDE4 is plasma would crash at least 3 times a day and have to be restarted.
Is there a way to install KDE4 without installing plasma?
I'm using Debian Jessie and I'm trying to install some Gnome Shell Extensions from this site: [URL] .....
I click on the extension and it shows a button that I can turn ON or OFF. It's OFF by default. Then I click it, it turns ON and I'm asked if I want to download and install that extension. I say Yes! But then nothing happens. If I visit "Installed extensions" session, it says there are no extensions installed. And if I refresh the extension page, the ON button becomes OFF again. No matter how many times I try to do this, the result is the same. I tryed it with Iceweasel (v. 24.2.0) and Google Chrome (v. 32.0.1700.77) and default gnome-shell (v. 3.8.4).
I run the 2.6.32-5-686 kernel on Squeeze and the bad nvidia drivers. A recent update, and pardon for not noting which, broke 3d games on my box. From a terminal neverputt yields the following error:

I can mv xorg.conf to xorg.conf-pre and nexuiz will fire-up. Without 3d of course. I spent an hour or so last week going over my xorg.conf but it just ain't broke! Someone else saw it, too, and reported it but his post remains alone in the thread as of 10 minutes ago.

I disabled X via terminal and then I ran a Virtual Console. With the virtual console I ran the chmod command and the went through the installation. It did bring up a message with something about my distro not having a pre-configured script (or something like that) and asked me if I would like to continue anyway. I choose Yes and the installation failed.
