Ubuntu Multimedia :: Opening Images In Gimp And Controling Their Relative Size?
Jul 27, 2011this should be easy but I dont know which option to use. I want to make a flier with Gimp, learned how to add fonts that are better than the crappy ones that come by default, but now I want to add images but want them to automatically scale to a size that I specify with a square I create by left clicking. I dont want to have to resize the entire image after measuring, I just want it to shrink/expand to fit an area that I specify for it.

Edit: I found it. As a reference: Open Nautilus, go to Edit-> Preferences -> "Media" tab -> Photos -> Your choice.

Jun 16, 2010I've had this odd, stubborn problem that seems to be related to the nouveau video driver and certain kernel builds: opening or saving full resolution jpeg image files using GIMP takes from 1-5 minutes and causes xorg CPU usage to reach almost 100%.This also occurs when using UFRaw to open Canon raw image files. The problem is not intermittent, it happens each time I open a file. Opening photos in the default image viewer works fine.This bug has vexed me on and off for the last couple of months, and seems to be triggered by a combination of kernel version and the Nouveau driver. I switched to Debian Squeeze from Ubuntu 10.04 because I was experiencing slow image open times in Ubuntu 10.04 (using the Nouveau driver).I did not experience the bug running Squeeze with the nv driver and kernel 2.6.32-3.
I did not have the bug running Squeeze with the nouveau driver and kernel 2.6.32-5 backported from Sid.I began experiencing the bug again after the Squeeze updates on June 14th (still running nouveau and kernel 2.6.32-5). I update daily so it's likely to be that day's updates which caused the bug to reappear.Just for grins, I installed the Liquorix kernel. The bug does not occur using kernel 2.6.34-0.dmz.10-liquorix-686 and the nouveau video driver.I have a Nvidia FX5500 video card. I prefer the nouveau driver to nv as my display seems to behave better. The Nvidia proprietary drivers are not an option because they produce X freezes when I am doing photo editing. The liquorix kernel seems to be working fine, but for long-term stability I'd rather be running a mainline Debian kernel.

Now Kmail will only open mp3 files attached to incoming mail with the Real Player.Outside of Kmail I have VLC set as my default player for mp3 files and that works fine but Kmail isn't respecting my system choices and I can't find any means, or reference to, changing the default media player in Kmail.This is so incredibly frustrating that it's almost like being stuck with a Windows system again.As a full-time Linux user I've lost my sense of martyred patience.

I just thought it was kind of funny, while browsing the software center for an image viewer that could handle it, I noticed the description of the one installed by default and thought it was kind of funny, so I snapped this screenshot and thought I'd share it with you guys. By the way I have 4 GB of RAM and can view the image just fine in GIMP, just thought this was kind of funny.

May 24, 2015Another thing that's always worked before but now I'm struggling with in Jessie, if I open a smb:// url it just says "Not supported", is it possible to add support in Thunar? Some googling says to install gvfs but it is already installed, gvfs-open just says "command not found" though.
Strange thing is that I have tons of those little problems that seem to be regression since Wheezy but somehow I'm the only one hit heh. I actually think all the problems are caused by choosing "XFCE" on the installer because I can reproduce them 100% on any PC as long as I install XFCE, it's better to install entirely default (Gnome) and add xfce afterwards is my theory but I don't feel like reinstalling the whole system again.

When you open a new tab or window, whatever is the cwd of the current tab becomes the cwd of the new tab or window. This always used to reset to ~, which is what I want. Is this a new "feature" and if I can disable it?

I find this selection dangerous because it's easy to paint over an image that I do not want marked up. There must be some sort of config file that can be altered. Software :: Opening MS Word Does Not Recognize .docx Files By Default
Jun 21, 2011The OpenOffice word processor can open and read Microsoft Word files containing XML (.docx) perfectly well, but it--or KDE--does not seem to recognize a .docx by default. To open one with OpenOffice, I have to manually tell OpenOffice to open it, by going through the "open with" option on the right-click menu and specifying soffice. That's obviously not a problem, but it's a minor curiosity. Haven't Word XML files been around long enough that KDE and OpenOffice should recognize them immediately?
I'm not quite sure which to blame this on--KDE or OpenOffice--but KDE seems more logical. And is this a small limitation of KDE 3.5? because I'm still using 3.5. (I'm trying to switch over to Trinity, but have not made the switch yet.)
Ubuntu :: Change Default For Opening Mounted Volumes In Unity Launcher?
Apr 29, 2011I automount two NTFS volumes on login. These display in both the desktop and the Unity launcher.
The first time I clicked one of them in the Unity launcher, it asked if I wanted to use Nautilus or Thunar. I chose Thunar.
Now, when I open the volumes in the Unity launcher, it always uses Thunar. When I open the volumes on my desktop, it always uses Nautilus.
Is there any way to standardize these, so that I use either Thunar or Nautilus, but not both? And how do I switch back and forth? Where can I reset the Unity launcher to use Nautilus again?

Apr 15, 2010When I try to playback a sound file in aucadity just after having played one in rhythmbox or totem or vlc (or presumably any other media player), I get the following message :
"Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."
When I try again 2 or 3 seconds later, playback works fine. In fact if I wait 2 or 3 seconds after having stopped playback in rhythmbox or totem before starting playback in audacity, audacity doesn't give me the error message at all. Just wondering what causes this delay (as there are no delays when I go from rhythmbox to totem or vlc or anything else).

May 26, 2010I just started using FireFTP instead of FileZilla because I got fed up with FileZilla not opening remote files and not recognising the default editor Gedit.
I really want to use keyboard shortcuts with FireFTP, which is possible according to the help docs on-line, but there is no option to use shortcuts anywhere even having enabled FireFTP to open in a new window. I tried it in Shiretoko 3.59 and Firefox 3.18 with no luck.
I just tried removing FileZilla and it does not appear in my list of installed apps. It appears in the full list as uninstalled but when ticking the box to install gives this message. FileZilla FTP client cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type. I already have FileZilla..so how is that?

May 13, 2015I have a problem on a fresh install of Jessie with KDE. I have three soundcards. In Wheezy I used pavucontrol once for each application to change the sink from the internal to the external soundcard, and that setting would stick each time I rebooted the system (audio would go on the external soundcard). Now each time I reboot the audio gets routed to the internal soundcard and I have to use pavucontrol each time to route the audio back to the external one. URL...
putting this line in /etc/pulse/default.pa
set-default-sink alsa_output.usb-E-MU_Systems__Inc._E-MU_0404___USB_E-MU-0E-3F04-07D80A14-027A8-STATION_01-00-USB.analog-stereo
as well as this one, and issuing:
pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.usb-E-MU_Systems__Inc._E-MU_0404___USB_E-MU-0E-3F04-07D80A14-027A8-STATION_01-00-USB.analog-stereo
and none of them has worked. I don't know if it's a related issue, but the settings I choose in the for Phonon in the KDE multimedia settings don't stick either. I select the external soundcard as default device and upon reboot the internal one is on top on the preferences list.

Jan 4, 2016I decided to switch from chrome back to iceweasel as my default browser. However, when I try to do that (as I used to) via Details -> Default Applications -> Web, iceweasel is not listed as choice.I tried to do it then from the shell with
