Fedora :: Gnome-terminal Doesn't Recognize Root Pw?

Oct 16, 2009

I have been using Fedora 11 for some time and I ran into a major problem today. I had installed some packages by yum (especially bacula-related) and erased them. Now I can't use gnome-terminal as root. Quote:

[webman@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
su: incorrect password

The password is correct, but it is not accepted as such.

General :: Start Gnome-disk-utility From A Terminal (as Root)?

Feb 8, 2010

I have a real newbie question. I want to edit my disk partition table. Mount some drives etc. I like gui tools and gnome's disk utility seems to be able to do everything I want to. My problem: When I want to create a new filesystem on an empty space, I'm not allowed to. I guess I need root access, but I can't login as root to my gnome session and I know no way to start the disk utility from a terminal where I'm the root user, so my question is: How do I do this?

Fedora :: 12 Doesn't Automatically Recognize Any New Device?

Feb 22, 2010

I recently updated from Fedora 9 to Fedora 12. Everything else works fine, but the situation with Fedora automatically recognised new devices when plugged in has changed to the exact opposite. Under Fedora 9, all devices I plugged in were always automatically recognised, whether I liked it or not. Under Fedora 12, nothing is ever automatically recognised any more. Whenever I plug something in, the system just ignores it. If they devices turn up as block device descriptors in /dev, I can manually mount them and access them through the mount points. Otherwise, I can't do squat. Now I can only access my digital camera by manually mounting it and copying the files. This works, but is cumbersome. Under Fedora 9, I used to be able to use GPhoto to download the pictures via PTP. Not any more. GPhoto acts as if the camera wasn't even there. So does F-Spot. What has happened? Have I missed installing some kernel module or service or something?

Fedora :: Get Shortcut For Root Terminal?

Aug 10, 2009

how to get a shortcut for opening a terminal as root? I mean something I could put in my gnome panel and then just click and get a dialog asking for the root password. Or maybe just open the terminal and automatically do "su -" (maybe this is easier actually). In Debian/Ubuntu this can be achieved doing "gksu gnome-terminal". In F10 I got it done using beesu, but it doesn't work anymore in F11:

Code: $ beesu gnome-terminal
(beesu:17788): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_x11_atom_to_xatom_for_display: assertion `atom != GDK_NONE' failed
(beesu:17788): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_x11_atom_to_xatom_for_display: assertion `atom != GDK_NONE' failed

Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)gedit opens fine but it seems really odd. My exposure to linux is not vast but this has never happened before Fedora12 It doesn't happen if I just use the terminal as an ordinary user.It also has nothing to do with the Bad & Ugly Gstreamer plugins as this happened from the moment the system was installed from the DVD and before the plugins were loaded even after removing them and rebooting I still get the ream of GConf errors if I start Gedit after su,

Fedora :: Can't Run GEdit And Other Tools From A Terminal By Logging In As Root?

Jul 20, 2011

Everyone is wondering why we can't run gEdit and other tools from a terminal by logging in as root(e.g"su-"), I understand that by making changes they are trying to force us as users of Linux to learn better habits that are more secure, but the issues are driving people nuts!

I for one really like being able to log as root and open gEdit to make drive changes without having to login as root, I would normally still have access to all my things like email etc. So changing Linux to force everyone to not use tools like gEdit as root is becoming more of an inconvenience than they realize, there must be a safe way to do this!

Fedora :: ANSI BBS In Gnome Terminal ?

Sep 24, 2010

I am a former Sysop of a BBS and currently resurrecting the BBS. I have been looking for a way to get Gnome Terminal in Fedora 13 configured to support ANSI BBS emulation.

Back in the DOS days, we just loaded ANSI.SYS and ran our terminal software (like Procomm Plus or Qmodem), but I am hoping someone has done this and can help me set it up.

I have already tried Qterrm and the "latest" syncterm. Neither of these worked right. Syncterm hasn't been updated since 2009, so I really don't want to mess too much with that one.

I know you can terminal.app in Mac OS X to do it, so I figure we can too. I REALLY want gnome terminal to be the way to do it.

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.I use su in my terminal I get the colors for ls. So there must be something up with my user profile? I have tried to edit my terminal profiles and my desktop themes neither worked. Please help! I know this is a trivial issue, but now I am on a mission to figure this out.

So with the two that are there by default, that's 5 total panels... None of the newly created panels where displaying at all. But after creating the last one the system froze up. Now when I try to boot into fedora my system locks up as it's trying to load GNOME...

Is there any way for me to remove those panels through BASH? So I can just boot to a prompt and get them removed. After that I imagine GNOME will load correctly again...
