This problem has lasted for several months, but I can't find anything like bug report in debian related website.
Basically my problem is after genome-terminal (version 3.4.1.1) is launched, I want to change profile setting such as font, color, etc. However, when I click the button `Edit > Profiles > Edit`, nothing happens (no dialogue pop up). `Edit > Profiles > New` And `Edit > Profiles > Delete` function correctly.
I am having trouble setting up a gnome-terminal to a specific profile. For example, when I open up R-cran I want the title to be 'R-cran'. And when I run Octave I would like the title to be 'Octave'. Pretty straight forward, so I thawt. So...I have been trying to set up and run different profiles for the different terminal windows that I want. I have set up 2 new profiles, 1) for R-cran 2) for Octave, each with their own titles.

gnome-terminal from the Debian squeeze does not use the 'default_size_columns' and 'default_size_rows' from the /apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/ folder of gconf.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
What package provides the utility found in the gnome-control-center for changing the notification themes? There is a gconf key that says slider, so it's possible it can be changed there, but I'm not certain what themes are available/valid
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I was running it before, that was Debian as well, I was able to make my gnome-terminal window decorations completely transparent and/or gone - so the terminal appeared to be typing directly on the desktop.
The method I used before to accomplish this was pretty straightforward, these options could be found in the actual terminal's interface and menu options.
However, now, I get the following result:

I'm trying to launch a root terminal with a profile preloaded, but I'm not yet used to the way gnome handles its syntax, so the default link to root terminal has me confused:

but this did not work, probably because in this case I'm not calling directly on gnome's terminal.
I updated my Jessie system today. Nothing crucial in the apt-get list as far as I can see, perhaps it's unrelated. Anyway, now I cannot open the terminal any longer. Launching `gnome-terminal` shows the app name in the menu bar, a spinning wheel, and then after a few seconds nothing. It doesn't appear in the list of processes, either. I can still log into the text shell via ctrl-alt-F1.
I also added `LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"` to `/etc/environment` to get rid of the American date format. Could it be the cause? I just tried to launch the terminal from the JVM. I get this output:

Under wheezy, I could set gnome-terminal profile to partial transparency, i.e., to display the desktop wallpaper behind the text. (E.g., a picture of my girlfriend.) But after upgrade to Jessie, this option completely disappeared, and now I can only pick a solid color. Do I need to flip a setting or something to get this back? Am running default Gnome desktop (not fallback mode) though I think I only have 2D acceleration.

When you open a new tab or window, whatever is the cwd of the current tab becomes the cwd of the new tab or window. This always used to reset to ~, which is what I want. Is this a new "feature" and if I can disable it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. I did change the icons, but this was after these problems started happening, and so it should be un-related.
I'm setting up my profile in gnome right now, with things like fonts, themes, wallpapers, iceweasel settings, menu settings, and I'm going to be adding a couple new users. Rather than re-do everything again, I thought I'd just create the new user, copy over my home dir, chown it to the new user and then login to make minor final adjustments, like specifiying where the music dir is and such.Just wondering if there'd be any problems with this, since it's just an idea I think should work but have never tried it. Any experience, or warnings?
View 7 Replies View Relatedpart of my current work involves cutting and pasting file names to text files. Double clicking on the terminal should select the "word" (and triple clicking selects the line). Many of my files contain special characters such as a "+" sign, and double clicking only seems to select up to the plus sign. (The "+" is useful information, so renaming he files isn't really an option, plus it would take too long).
Is it possible in gnome terminal (or a different terminal - gnome terminal is the default on this system) to reconfigure this so it selects up to the whitespace, rather than the "+" sign?

I installed compiz on squeeze. I followed the steps on [url] , everything seems fine except my gnome-terminal shows me a white-in-white screen, seems like both the background and foreground are white, I tried to change the gnome-terminal profile, it doesn't work, after I disable compiz, gnome-terminal back to normal. Starting around two weeks ago, Iceweasel began closing at unpredictable intervals for no apparent reason. When I ran it in GDB, it came up as a segfault, though the backtraces were different each time. It would even do this in safe mode, though it generally took longer. Icedove began doing the same thing around the same time.
So, I decided to reset my profile and start over. But now it's still segfaulting, even in safe mode.
A cursory use of memtester didn't turn up anything unusual.
Could it be some browser addon that is causing problems even when it's not activated?
If so, why is Icedove doing the same thing occasionally?
The biggest problem is that it's intermittent, so I would have to use my browser with a new profile for a long time before I could confirm that the problem is actually fixed.
I didn't leave much space for the / folder during installation of squeeze and now I can't seem to copy over old profile folder from a windows install of thunderbird. Any way to change the location of the profile folder?

I have just installed Debian Squeeze on my spare computer (dual booted with Ubuntu 11.04) and I cannot connect to the internet using Squeeze. Due to my ISP, I have to manually connect this computer and on Ubuntu copying and pasting a text file such as this into the terminal works with no problems.What do I need to do to manually configure my Squeeze internet connection?

At first, all seemed normal on the gnome-terminal except for the scroll bar but my theme settings don't seem to have changed. I guess that's because, they haven't as I can see in programs like iceweasel where all is normal.I am using testing/wheezy. I tried removing /home/deniz/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal and restarting my computer but that did not work. Did an update screw things up or what? How do I bring things back to normal?

I've been using Ubuntu with GNOME for the past few years and I'm looking at possibly switching to the KDE-based Kubuntu. I know I can have both DE's on my system and even found a tutorial on the Psychocats site for setting it up, but I have a question for the KDE gurus here. Can I safely use the same user profile between both GNOME and KDE or should I set up a new user for working in KDE? I haven't seen anything saying I can't but I really don't want to hose my GNOME settings in case I end up not liking KDE enough to use it on a daily basis.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI try to change the default character encoding in gnome-terminal. I want to use UTF8, but every gnome-terminal i start uses "ANSIX3.4-1968".
In the menu, when i go in Terminal => Set character encoding i have a list with two items:
[x] Current Locale (ANSIX3.4-1968)
[ ] Unicode (UTF-8)
I don't know why the first item appears, i have another debian box and it has only the UTF-8 encoding available. I cannot remove the first item in "add or remove" sub menu !! Probably because it is related to "current locale"

View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning Gnome on Jessie. Have had Gnome hang a few times over the past few months. The hangs seem to be related to having open and / or closing a root terminal. It has happened on a Gateway AMD Phenom II tower and on my Gateway NV59 lappy with Pentium P6200.
