I have recently added a new keyboard layout - international U.S with dead keys - so I can type accentes and so in spanish. Ever since that gnome-terminal doesn't recognize the shortcuts keys like <ctrl>r or <ctrl>c and I get my other language charecters instead. thats happen with any keyboard layout I swith to. Furthermore, <alt><ctrl>+F1...F9 doesn't work either.
View 5 RepliesRecently I installed MPlayer with its default gui and its interfaces SMPlayer and GnomeMPlayer. When I'm using GnomeMPlayer it responds to multimedia keys as configured in Gnome shortcuts, even if it's minimized or running in another virtual desktop. But it doesn't happen to the other two gui's mentioned above. I have also noticed that native Gnome applications or with Gnome support like Banshee and Rhythmbox rspond to multimedia keys even when the gui is closed and they are running only in the system tray. But it never occurs in non-Gnome applications like VLC, MPlayer and others. Jetaudio wich responds to these keys in MS Windows running under Wine doesn't even recognize them.
So I came to the conclusion that only native Gnome applications or with Gnome support recognize multimedia keys because, as it seems, they receive the signal from Gnome configurations. Others applications doesn't do so. Here is my question: Is there some way to make all applications recognize the configuration of Gnome multimedia keys shortcuts? (Of course it would not be fine if they recognized ALL Gnome shortcuts because they could conflict with shortcuts from another applications. The idela would be that they recognize ONLY Gnome multimedia shortcuts.)
I have been using Fedora 11 for some time and I ran into a major problem today. I had installed some packages by yum (especially bacula-related) and erased them. Now I can't use gnome-terminal as root. Quote:

Is there any way to disable shortcut keys in XFCE Terminal ? I can't seem to bind the shortcut keys, and F1 especially really gets in the way for some programs. Have no clue who thought it would be a good idea to bind F1 to a stupid help screen, when many terminal programs need this. I am using fluxbox, so maybe this has something to do with it.

So the key keyboard shortcut is:
CTRL+ALT+TAB
With it you change the focus from the desktop to the panel, and vice versa When the focus in in the panel you can move from icon to icon with TAB (to the right) or SHIFT+TAB (to the left). Then Enter key (sometimes F10 instead) makes the same as left-clicking with the mouse, and SHIFT+F10 makes the same as right-clicking with the mouse. ESC key (sometimes Enter instead) takes the menus out.

how to get linux onto an old laptop (dell inspiron 2600, 1GHZ, 120MB RAM). the cd drive doesn't recognize CD's anymore and in boot menu, "Setup Utility" the usb drives aren't recognized. the usb drive or pen drive boots in another desktop just fine. i need to somehow install xubuntu or crunchbang or something lite but must do it using net install. i see lots of tutorials but they are either too complicated or unknown source, like "inslux." and not too complicated of a process. I'm a "techie-tard," i guess. also, i'd like to suggest a new "sub-forum" in "distribution" forum, Called "General Distro."

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. GNOME Do 0.8.3.1
I have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows

Ubuntu 10.04 - Gnome Termainal - BASH pressing cursor keys in certain users produces garbage. For example:
pressing up arrow produces: ^[[A
pressing down arrow produces: ^[[B
pressing right arrow produces: ^[[C
pressing left arrow produces: ^[[D
Naturally, I'd like my bash history instead of this. For root and my main user I have no problems. I have a few system users (who don't have a standard home directory) and this seems to occur with those users. For example, my amandabackups user has a home directory of /var/lib/amanda.
I'm a big fan of Gnome's alt/middle-click to resize a window. However, it doesn't work anymore for me, and I believe it stopped working (or got toggled off) when I installed the Unity desktop package (just wanted to check it out).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 9.10. All of a sudden several of my function keys stopped working and several keyboard shortcuts that I had setup involving function keys stopped working as well.
For example, when I go to preferences->keyboard shortcuts and try to set "Toggle fullscreen mode" to Alt+F11, the text "XF86AudioRaiseVolume" appears where it should just say "Alt+F11". Pressing Alt+F11 does nothing.
All of my function keys somehow got mapped to XF86AudioBlahBlah and no longer work. How do I undo this? I recently installed ffmpeg and gtk-recordmydesktop but I don't think I installed anything else.
I need to use bluetooth, but for some yet unknown reason I don't seem to be able to switch on the bluetooth-card (it should be as simple as to press the Fn+F6 buttons on the keyboard to switch it on though and then the bluetooth indicator should light up, which is not happening, but I don't know if this is because of (X)ubuntu) and Ubuntu says it can't find the bluetooth card. That's not what I wanted to discuss now, but I think some history is always welcome when trying to do fault-finding I thought I maybe might be able to do it from Win7 . So after months of not having booted Win7 I thought to give it a try, but I get stuck right after the grub boot-screen. All I get is a blinking cursor for minutes and there's no HD activity. Then I booted Xubuntu again and it needed to do some check, which I passed and Xubuntu started as normal. This check was done by "Keys". I don't really know what this Keys is, but since a couple of days I always get this word below the word Xubuntu in the boot-splash-screen. This is only after I installed WinFF or DVD::RIP. There was some error during install telling me that it needed something with 'keys', so I entered the command quoted, something was installed and then the rest of the installation went okay. I've been looking in the bash_history files (user and root) but I can't find the command which I entered to install this keys-thing anymore, which is of course strange on itself.
Now I've got the idea (I'm not sure though) that I can't boot Windows because of this keys thing, but I have no clue how to get rid of it. Or could there be other problems causing Windows not to boot?
I really hope someone can help me getting back in Windows again, because losing the Windows partition really is not fun, even though I hardly use it. I can enter the Windows partition from Linux with a file manager though, so it's not vanished. Just wish to be able to boot Win7 when I need it.
Every time I start Ubuntu, I set up an ssh session to a server. In order to automate this I made an entry in startup programs like this:/usr/bin/gnome-terminal -e '/usr/bin/ssh name@server.com'Nothing happens when I log in, and I've checked that the command works.

When you open a new tab or window, whatever is the cwd of the current tab becomes the cwd of the new tab or window. This always used to reset to ~, which is what I want. She is running a pangolin performance which came with lucid while I am running a pangolin performance which came with karmic and i upgraded to lucid (bought before her). For some reason hulu always worked for me, so I was trying to fix it on her computer too, but somehow one of the commands I told her to run made her computer not be able to recognize that her built in webcam exists anymore.
The reason that this is so hard is that I don't remember which commands I told her to run, but one of them was the instructions from post #5 on this page: [URL]. But I don't know how messing with flash stuff could have possibly screwed up her computer detecting her webcam. The drivers are definitely installed for webcam, however when she 'locate uvcvideo' it tells her that permission is denied, so the problem might be that her computer isn't giving her the permission to access the webcam drivers to use the webcam, just an idea.
I have dual boot (winxp) which has been working for over a year now.But for some reason recently, grub wont recognise the keyboards arrow keys. ie cant change menu selection. in fact it wont recognise keyboard at all it seems. Pressing enter wont work either. I have to wait for the timeout.
The arrows work before hand (like in bios settings) and after once ubuntu has booted. Just not in the grub menu
Its something to with the USB wireless keyboard. If i replace it for standard PS2 kybd it works.
I'm unsure as to how I can use keyboard shorts to close the current tab or to switch between tabs. Does anyone know them or know any other keyboard-based options for using the terminal in AWN? I can open a new tab by ctrl+shift+t but ctrl+shift+w doesn't work and i've never known how to switch between tabs

In an attempt to get it back, I deleted ~/.local/share/applications and ~/.gconf/apps/panel, assuming they'd be automatically replaced. I ran the updater today and it updated gnome-panel, so I $ killall gnome-panel 'd just in case, and once again nothing. I have all the custom launchers from ~/.local/share/applications saved onto my desktop, but right now I need all the original launchers back. I don't even have the software management launcher! It just shows me a little tiny black stripe because it's completely empty. BTW, I'm running Lucid 64.

I have recently installed Kubuntu Maverick on my netbook and have decided that I now like KDE again The one bit of functionality that I am missing is the keyboard short cuts of Gnome-Do. So if I type Windows key Em, return and Emacs launches.
The search box in Kubuntu sort of does this. However, I have to click in the box and when I have typed the first few characters I have to click on the icon with the mouse. Is there any way I can do this just using the keyboard and not the mouse? I have searched the help and Googled without much success.
Just got a problem that I've spent a few days trying to get around. Basically, what I am trying to do is create launchers/shortcuts on my desktop that will
a) Launch a terminal with root or sudo access
b) Launch an application.
For example, an application I might ordinarily use as a super user or root user is 'hping3.'
Basically, I want to be able to click on the launcher, and have it open up a terminal with sudo access and launch the hping3 application. I've tried messing around with the 'create launcher' function, and entering in a command to be launched in a terminal window, but to no avail (e.g. something like "sudo hping3" or "su && hping3"). How to write up a simple script to launch a terminal with su access and launch a given application?
I installed gnome-do to see what it was like (useless - doesn't work properly with Unity as far as I can tell). After trying it out for a while I noticed that my browser and email keyboard shortcuts didn't work anymore. I have a Microsoft Ergo 4000 keyboard with dedicated browser and email buttons that I always used to start Firefox and Thunderbird. Now the browser button starts the browser, but instead of starting my home page it attempts to load a non-url number. All settings, like keyboard shortcuts, software preferences and in the browser are still set correctly, but it doesn't work anymore.The email button doesn't do anything anymore.Once again, all settings like keyboard shortcuts and software preferences are still correct, but the button no longer works.

I don't understand why I cannot use Ctrl-Ins and Shift-Ins shortcuts for copy and paste in console terminal. Shortcuts works fine in X terminal (fluxbox) Konsole... but they don't in text console.
View 2 Replies View RelatedKarmic there was a tab inside "System->Preferences->Appearance" called "Interface" which allowed me to modify the keyboard shortcuts. I had <Backspace> to move backwards in Nautilis and <Shift><Backspace> to move forward.
Without this tab can anyone tell me how I can modify the shortcuts to do this? I have spent some time looking at gconf-editor but nothing is jumping out at me, particularly with regards to the back and forward browsing.
I wonder if GNOME have this very cool shortcut feature where, no matter if it is a GNOME-bundled application or a third-party, you can open up the settings/edit/configuration for that particular app by pressing a keyboard combination?
Mac OS X has it in the form of Cmd+, and KDE also has it, although I dont remember what the default is for that. Does our beloved GNOME have it? It would be so rat if it does, or if it is possibly to enable.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, but wanted to use Banshee instead of Rhythmbox. After running Code: sudo aptitude install banshee I wanted to bind my "Media" button on my keyboard to run banshee; unfortunately, it still wants to run rhythmbox. Where can I change the default command executed by these keyboard shortcuts? I can't seem to find them in gconf-editor under apps/metacity/* and googling has proved fruitless in finding where this configuration file is located.
