The gnome-shell-extensions have been accepted into the stable repository and should appear soon along with an updated gnome-shell. Now, if you installed the extensions for my factory branch whilst I was working on the extensions, you need to remove the repository and remove the installed packages as there have been some name changes to the extensions. I don't recommend the xrandr extension, it will crash the shell! If you do try it, you only need to do a ctrl+alt+F1 and login as root user and zypper rm, logout and ctrl+alt+F7 and login.

lxappearance won't let me change themes on Squeeze. It just doesn't do anything, neither preview, nor theme setting. Turns out this is a known bug, and allegedly fixed. Ppl are told to "upgrade" their package. However, in Squeeze it's still the old package, and it doesn't work. So I filed another new bug report, which they closed and told me to upgrade the package.
Upgrade? From Sid? What happened to fixing Testing so it can become the next stable? Not much stable if a major DE can't change themes. Not that it's a real problem, but it's
annoying. I purged lxappearance and manually installed its Sid counterpart, only to find out
the bug is still there.

We recently installed KDE on our Debian 7.7 (stable) system. However, upon logging in, the piano roll was crackly and distorted; similar, if not identical to this [URL] .... problem. However, disabling HDMI output in PulseAudio Volume Control, as recommended in the "solution" in the above link did not fix the issue, and we do not think the other solution of updating the kernel is likely to be a solution, since audio is fine in GNOME. Because of this, it seems likely that the problem is with Phonon, KDE's sound layer.
Here is some of the info about the system:
- Dual-boot Debian 7.7/Windows Vista 64-bit
- AMD sound hardware
- Only analog stereo is used; HDMI is not
- AMD CPU and (integrated) GPU
This seems to be a problem about half the time. Also, sound tends to play better when being played the second time in a row, and adjusting the volume even slightly seems to have an immediate effect on improving the sound quality.

I am just trying to setup my debian 8.2 stable in my Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N2600 @ 1.60GHz. The installation goes smooth without any issues. For this system , we are planning to use DUAL display with HDMI & LVDS.
We see that that only HDMI is working and LVDS screen is blank. However, we notice that XRANDR is is showing LVDS as connected

I downloaded and installed Debian 6.0.1a last night (CD image #1).
It had no music player, but I could play ogg files and the sound was OK.
Then I installed Banshee and (which installed some more packages). Now the sound is gone.
I installed Debian on my Asus EEE 1015P netbook.

I have a sony x10mini and it is correctly seen in nautilus and shotwell. But nor in banshee 1.6 (testing and sid) nor in 1.9 (experimental) is mounted. Fact is that I know it works for sure in fedora and debian so I wonder if it a problem of some dependency missing, configuration or permissions. I use the testing distro by the way...

I'm having some problems with banshee that started about 6 months ago. Banshee remains idle and does not play any type of music file. I've tried installing and selectively installing Gstreamer codecs with no success. I'm running stretch.

So I recently moved from Ubuntu 10.04 to Debian (I'm tired of Ubuntu assuming everything I want). As much as I like how Debian doesn't result in me uninstalling several hundred MB of packages, it also doesn't have the latest stuff.I'm using sid AND experimental repositories and neither of them let me use the later KDEs. I want the new KDE, its significantly better but I have no idea how to get it with Debian's repos. Also, how am I supposed to install the nvidia drivers in synaptic? I had to download them from nvidia's website and log out into a command line. To make matters more confusing, it asked for gcc 4.4 but I do have that (as well as all other c++ 4.4 related packages). I can ignore the gcc warning and it installs just fine anyway. I can deal with installing the drivers from the command line but its REALLY annoying when you have to do that after every kernel update, so i'd rather have the package manager do it for me.I am so far very unimpressed with the way Debian is maintained. Its missing many packages ubuntu came with too. I have other problems as well but I've managed to fix them or I'll work on them more later.

Are there any efforts similar to Kubuntu's backports PPA where I can only use newer KDE and KDE apps on the current stable platform?Reason: I'd like to keep base OS at stable level (F14) and get new[er] KOffice (2.3.0) components that are of particular interest to me. Obviously I can download packages manually etc, but it feels like last decade.Alternative would be to add rawhide yum repo and try to install from there, but since it's the whole-system repo I could be risking the rest of the system. What is the preferred approach for those cases? In Gentoo there are overlays for projects like KDE, in Ubuntu there are ppa's, what's Fedora's approach? http://spins.fedoraproject.org/kde doesn't provide any info on that subject.

What is the recommended way to do updates when running sid (especially those involving updates of xorg or desktop environments as they should not be running at that time)? I imagine this would be safe:
1. # apt-get update
2. # apt-get dist-upgrade -d
3. Switch to a text mode terminal (say, tty1).
4. # /etc/init.d/kdm stop
5. # apt-get dist-upgrade
Or simply using init 1.

I was trying to install debian etch in my laptop, but it seems that the kernel 2.6.26 has a bug related to the ACPIC Timer and the HDD controler, so the installation in some part is freezed, so, I found that in the kernel 2.6.3xx the bugs are gone, it looks that i have to install unstable or testing, searching in the wiki is not enough clear for me what should I choose, so my question is:based in your experience, which is better to choose unstable or testing? I would use the laptop to code in LAMP, postgreSQL, J2EE and do some excercises related to networking services: SSH, DNS, iptables, etc

I noticed that Sid/unstable (Gnome - kernel 2.6.33 - xorg 1.7) does not use xorg.conf file for X driver. The X driver seems to get detected automatically by the kernel and xorg, which is done perfectly even with 3D support. But I noticed that it uses the xorg.conf file for the input devices. When I renamed it, the keyboard and mouse were disabled. Is there a way to get the input devices detected automatically also and get red of xorg.conf file completely?

I've just migrated to Debian unstable with KDE 4.4 and it's all fine except that I have no sound in certain cases. The default settings in the KDE Multimedia section had pcsp (Internal PC speaker) as the first device listed everywhere, so I had no sound anywhere at all (except the sound test button).
After placing the sound card on top, I got sound in JuK and KDE login/logout sounds, for example, but there's still no sound in VLC or when viewing Flash videos (games seem to have no sound, too).Another thing is that unless I mute the Beep channel (using KMix), I hear awful screeching even if nothing is playing. Muting the chanel stops that.I had no such problems running sidux + KDE 4.3.

EDIT: This thread has taken a different turn, please go down to viewtopic.php?f=30&t=64242#p370832 Below is I originally wrote, now totally irrelevant.:D I am delighted/bored with my one Debian Squeeze install, so I've decided to free up a partition to play with another configuration of the universal OS.At the moment I am liking the looks of the supposedly not so unstable Sid; what's the ideal download/install path to get Sid up and running? Is it:1) I already have a live Squeeze GNOME DVD lying around; should I install that again and upgrade to Sid?
