Debian Multimedia :: 7.7 (stable) System - Intermittent Crackly Sound In KDE
Dec 29, 2014
We recently installed KDE on our Debian 7.7 (stable) system. However, upon logging in, the piano roll was crackly and distorted; similar, if not identical to this [URL] .... problem. However, disabling HDMI output in PulseAudio Volume Control, as recommended in the "solution" in the above link did not fix the issue, and we do not think the other solution of updating the kernel is likely to be a solution, since audio is fine in GNOME. Because of this, it seems likely that the problem is with Phonon, KDE's sound layer.
Here is some of the info about the system:
- Dual-boot Debian 7.7/Windows Vista 64-bit
- AMD sound hardware
- Only analog stereo is used; HDMI is not
- AMD CPU and (integrated) GPU
This seems to be a problem about half the time. Also, sound tends to play better when being played the second time in a row, and adjusting the volume even slightly seems to have an immediate effect on improving the sound quality.

Intermittently after using Firefox for watching You Tube etc, you find that there is no sound from Amarok and probably all other sound applications. Sometimes while using Firefox for multimedia playback ie You Tube the sound gets stuck ie (repeats the same few millseconds of sound ad infinitem) like a stuck record (for those that remember them). One solution is to reboot the system, however a quicker method is to stop & restart the alsa sound system.

When I open an .mkv video file with SMplayer or VLC in Debian Stable, there is no sound, only the motion pictures, and VLC returns an error about alsa. But mkv files play normally, with sound, in VLC and MPlayer on Debian Testing. How can I get the sound from .mkv to work in Stable as well ?

My microphone in skype is crackling on Debian Wheezy stable 7.5 ... It is OK on Windows so it is obviously not the hardware to blame.
I have tried already all the options I could find regarding this on the internet, by changing in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf:
Code: Select all resample-method = speex-float-10
OR
Code: Select all resample-method = speex-float-1
My output was also crackling but I solved it by changing:
in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf:
Code: Select all default-sample-rate = 48000
flat-volumes = no
in /etc/pulse/default.pa:
Code: Select allload-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
I also tried starting skype with
Code: Select all PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 skype
Without any success. Now the output is perfect, but the microphone in skype (haven't tested it elsewhere) is crackling.

Does anyone know where I could find a block diagram of the Squeeze sound system with all the possible permutations thereof. I am primarily interested in OSS4 on a KDE4 desk top. I want something that shows all possible inputs, all possible outputs and all of the component programs in between. At this point I am really confused by all of the possible packages and how they interact with each other.
My present OSS4 installation works with oss4test, VLC, etc. but doesn't work with iceweasel. I have installed all of the recommended packages to no avail. I have an Intel DP55KG mother board with the Intel HD sound system on board.

lxappearance won't let me change themes on Squeeze. It just doesn't do anything, neither preview, nor theme setting. Turns out this is a known bug, and allegedly fixed. Ppl are told to "upgrade" their package. However, in Squeeze it's still the old package, and it doesn't work. So I filed another new bug report, which they closed and told me to upgrade the package.
Upgrade? From Sid? What happened to fixing Testing so it can become the next stable? Not much stable if a major DE can't change themes. Not that it's a real problem, but it's
annoying. I purged lxappearance and manually installed its Sid counterpart, only to find out
the bug is still there.

I am just trying to setup my debian 8.2 stable in my Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N2600 @ 1.60GHz. The installation goes smooth without any issues. For this system , we are planning to use DUAL display with HDMI & LVDS.
We see that that only HDMI is working and LVDS screen is blank. However, we notice that XRANDR is is showing LVDS as connected

I am having a very strange problem with my sound card. I have found that occasionally when I boot up my system the sound card is not detected. I could understand that there may be driver issues if it was never detected but it usually works again after a reboot. I read that it might help to switch to ALSA so I switched the audio input and output to ALSA and thought it had fixed the problem but I just noticed that the sound card was not connected on my most recent boot up.

I've had a snap, crackle, pop coming from my speakers since I put this machine together, even now, with no reason for any sound to be coming from the speakers. Additionally, the crackling only becomes worse when I play ANY audio regardless of player or source, however the sound does just drop for a few seconds and then back and then off again when there is SUPPOSED to be audio. I understand not working at all, but "kinda" working is more confusing.
I'm running slack64 with the with an updated kernel from current, even though the rest of the machine is stock 13_64. The problem was the same with the original 2.6.29.6 kernel.

I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.
System:
OpenSuse 11.2 (it is a pretty fresh install)
OpenSoundSystem 4.2
KDE 4.4 (updated from factory repos)

I have a core i7 machine on which I have dual booted Ubuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14. I am facing a weird problem on both the Linux distributions. Currently, I am facing three major problems which are causing me to use my laptop instead of this machine. Most of the times the sound gets distorted ( like the tempo is very slow and some cracks), but some other times it just works fine. ( I experienced this on both Ubuntu and Fedora)Internet at times is very fast and works great, but suddenly it slows down and takes a whole lot time to load. sometimes it just never gets fast. The low resolution flash videos, gets this very weird high pitch sound
Also, I noticed ( I don't think there is a relation between the two or is there?) that whenever the internet is slow, the sound is also distorted and when internet is fast sound works great. The intermittent nature of the problem is making it difficult to debug.

I've just installed OpenSuse 11.3 on my two Sony Vaio VPCF11Z1E machines (which have a Geforce GT 330M graphics card). Both machines appear to setup correctly and behave normally, but at seemingly random intervals (of the order of magnitude of 15-30 minutes) the whole system locks up for no readily apparent reason. I can still move the mouse pointer around the screen, but I cannot click on anything, and the whole keyboard is unresponsive (including any reasonable ctrl-alt-xxx which might normally help). The only way to get out of this seems to be to press and hold the power button to shut the whole machine off (which is not ideal!)

I'm running 32-bit Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5-686) on an old IBM TinkCentre piece-meal system that runs great otherwise. I have a LITEON iHAS424 Burner attached. As soon as I insert any disk (CD, DVD, Blank, Commercial, etc.) the system either locks up entirely or crawls to a near stop. The drive is about 3-4 months old and I've experienced the problem a couple of times in the past but just about every time I try to use it lately. The CD/DVD drive seems to work fine on other systems, but I haven't had the luxury of leaving in for any length of time to be 100% sure.
I have been able to pull out of the problem in the past by opening up the case and disconnecting/reconnecting both ends of the drive cable, but this doesn't always work and never "feels right" as a fix. Here is what I think are the significant portions of my messages log file:Quote:

I can play sound files with aplay, esdplay, and vlc, but I don't get any sound from iceweasel and chromium.
I installed a squeeze base system (without gnome and without the standard system utilities), then added (using --no-install-recommends) xserver-xorg-core, xdm, fluxbox, alsa-base, alsa-utils, alsa-oss, iceweasel, chromium-browser. Here I checked for sound and there was none from the browsers. I have since installed vlc, esound-clients, alsaplayer-esd, gstreamer0.10-alsa, and other software that didn't look sound-related and didn't change the symptoms.
Setting ICEWEASEL_DSP to "aoss" or "esddsp" doesn't help. Neither does "chmod -R 777 /dev/{audio,dsp,midi,mixer,snd}". snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss are loaded. Both my account and root are in group "audio". Running the browsers as root doesn't help.
This is the output of chromium:
In case it makes any difference, all of this happens in a qemu-kvm virtual machine with an emulated es1370 soundcard. Same with sb16 soundcard.
I would prefer not to install everything vaguely related to sound in the repositories in the hope of things fixing themselves. That's just ugly, plus I have only 200MB free space left.

I made a recent update to my Squeeze system and got this weird problem. mplayer, VLC and firefox (.....) all have sound. But when I try to run Amarok I get nothing. I looked into the Multimedia panel on the KDE4 system settings, and its not showing any devices at all. Previously it used to show HDA Intel etc., etc. Now the entries are completely blank. How do I get KDE to recognize my hardware? Shouldnt it pick things up automatically?

I've been running into issues with VLC crashing now and again, particularly when seeking through the current item using the bar (as opposed to Ctrl-Right Arrow/Left Arrow); it may have happened in a few other spots, but that's usually when I'm not at my keyboard. All files are stored locally on my HD, mostly .avi video. For the most part, when I'm using VLC, I've got Firefox and maybe a Nautilus window running as well. CPU use, Memory use, and System load stay pretty well down (and I've never managed to get my swap usage above 120MiB of the 1.2GiB on the Swap partition).
I've tried removing and reinstalling VLC, no dice; about screen lists Ver 1.0.2 Goldeneye. A side effect of this is that, until I restart the system, the screen is unable to be put to sleep at it's timeout; in the notification bar of the top panel, an icon appears and (if the mouse is left there) a little box will appear with text as follows:
Session active, not inhibited, screen idle.
If you can see this text, your display server is broken and you should notify your distributor.
Please see [URL] for more information.
The URL there listed doesn't have any information that seems to be useful, but, I'd presume that VLC does something to prevent the screen turning off while it's playing (a situation where most folks aren't going to be typing or mousing around), which is undone when VLC ends cleanly (and re-opening, then exiting doesn't fix it).

I've recently managed to get upgraded to 10.10, however I'm having a few issues playing audio from Rhythmbox. I've installed Amarok which is working fine, but with Rhythmbox, the track plays, but no audio comes out, however if I skip through the track, say to halfway, the audio suddenly comes back - however it does this for each and every track, or completely skips some tracks with an error symbol next to it - however if I skip back to that track and fast forward through it, it will play. I've also installed Banshee which has exactly the same problem.
I've been messing about reinstalling gstreamer and various other bits and have finally narrowed the problem down to the hardware settings within sound preferences - If I set to Analog Stereo everything works perfectly - but when set to 5.1 just Rhythmbox and Banshee fail - everything else is absolutely fine - system sounds play, flash videos play, Amarok plays - the sound test within sound preferences also works for each speaker. I've been googling around for this problem but can't seem to find a lot of info on this

I just recently installed ubuntu (two days ago). Everything is working as expected, except the sound. For one reason or another I cant get any sound at all. So I searched around a little on my computer and noticed that sound devices were not enabled for this computer. So I turned it on and still got nothing. Then I went through the comprehensive guide to fix sound and still nothing. Although Alsa did not have my exact audio sound card (HDA ATI and Intel) it did have the generic one, so I tried that. Nothing. I was wondering if anyone knows a solution to get my sound cards to work. Im posting them up here.

I'm having intermittent network failure on my laptop but I can't figure out why. I have a cable modem and a 10Mb/s (bits) connection (at least that's what I'm paying for). The modem is connected to a wireless router, to which my laptop connects wirelessly. Quite often my speed drops considerably-- sometimes as low as a few hundred bytes per second. Other times it fails completely. This will happen with just about any server you can imagine, including the Debian FTP mirrors in the US.
- When I do file transfers over the local network from my laptop to my desktop, they go pretty fast, around 2 MB/s. I believe my wireless card (Intel 3495) maxes out at 3 MB/s (bytes), so that seems reasonable.
- When I download a file from the outside network, it usually goes pretty fast too, around 1 MB/s, which is close to my limit.
So why is it that the connection between the laptop and the external network is so slow? I've tried power cycling, but it doesn't really help. I can't think of anything else to try.

I have been having troubles with having sound from my soundcard "M-Audio Firewire Solo" since I installed Ubuntu, more than 1 year ago.
Today, I have the sound from audacious 2 by using jack which means I can now listen music because audacious supports jack. what about other stuff?
I mean, forexample I cannot hear anything on ...... becouse firefox does not try to send the sound to the jack - or something like that I assume. So I think, there must be a way that I can hear all the sound that my computer produce. (welcome sound, pidgin sounds, video sounds, game sounds etc...)
So that, I am searching for a way that I can direct the whole sound to the JACK which can send the sound to my firewire soundcard and to my speakers.
OR
What the hell is FFADO - Mixer? Is this problem have something to do with that? do I need to use jack always in order to have sound ? I am not going to produce something on ubuntu - I do it with Win. so All I need is to use my soundcard as a regular soundcard
I am now using an upgraded version of vanilla ubuntu to studio Karmic.

Since I can remember, Logout sound never plays in Ubuntu, or maybe the problem is Compiz + Gnome. A very similar problem occurs in KDE (Kubuntu), but here the problem is No Login sound.
Gnome + Compiz: Good Login sound, No Logout sound.
KDE: No Login Sound, good Logout sound.
So, what is the problem with Login/Logout sounds in Linux now? I have used the last 4 Ubuntu releases, and Logout sound never plays in Ubuntu(gnome). How could a fix that?
