Hardware :: Migrated To Debian Unstable With KDE 4.4?

May 17, 2010

I've just migrated to Debian unstable with KDE 4.4 and it's all fine except that I have no sound in certain cases. The default settings in the KDE Multimedia section had pcsp (Internal PC speaker) as the first device listed everywhere, so I had no sound anywhere at all (except the sound test button).

After placing the sound card on top, I got sound in JuK and KDE login/logout sounds, for example, but there's still no sound in VLC or when viewing Flash videos (games seem to have no sound, too).Another thing is that unless I mute the Beep channel (using KMix), I hear awful screeching even if nothing is playing. Muting the chanel stops that.I had no such problems running sidux + KDE 4.3.

Debian :: Precautions When Updating Unstable?

May 5, 2010

What is the recommended way to do updates when running sid (especially those involving updates of xorg or desktop environments as they should not be running at that time)? I imagine this would be safe:

1. # apt-get update
2. # apt-get dist-upgrade -d
3. Switch to a text mode terminal (say, tty1).
4. # /etc/init.d/kdm stop
5. # apt-get dist-upgrade

Or simply using init 1.

Debian :: Choosing Between Unstable And Testing?

Mar 16, 2010

I was trying to install debian etch in my laptop, but it seems that the kernel 2.6.26 has a bug related to the ACPIC Timer and the HDD controler, so the installation in some part is freezed, so, I found that in the kernel 2.6.3xx the bugs are gone, it looks that i have to install unstable or testing, searching in the wiki is not enough clear for me what should I choose, so my question is:based in your experience, which is better to choose unstable or testing? I would use the laptop to code in LAMP, postgreSQL, J2EE and do some excercises related to networking services: SSH, DNS, iptables, etc

Debian :: How To Get Rid With Xorg.conf In Sid/unstable

Aug 15, 2010

I noticed that Sid/unstable (Gnome - kernel 2.6.33 - xorg 1.7) does not use xorg.conf file for X driver. The X driver seems to get detected automatically by the kernel and xorg, which is done perfectly even with 3D support. But I noticed that it uses the xorg.conf file for the input devices. When I renamed it, the keyboard and mouse were disabled. Is there a way to get the input devices detected automatically also and get red of xorg.conf file completely?

OpenSUSE :: Evolution Contacts Can Not Be Migrated To Evo 2.32.1?

May 11, 2011

Since I move from opensuse 11.3 to 11.4 Evolution adressbooks do not workI appreciate any tips in howto fix addressbooks or how to migrate address books. Evolution 2.30.1.2 (OS 11.3) has the data in ~./evolution while Evolution 2.32.1 (OS 11.4) has the data in ~/local/share/evolution.These are observations from what I have tried.1. The backup from Evo 2.3O.1.2 does not work under restore in 2.32.12. If copy ~/.evolution and ~/.gconfig/apps/evolution form 2.30.1.2 to 2.32.1 (that was the way to migrate under 2.30 and before).

2.1 the setup is transfer and works2.2 the mail is transfer and works (including the folders)2.3 the contact folders are corrupted: some can not be open, some work, some can not be deleted. I change permission without any success. 3. I delete ~/evolution (which has no effect in the new evolution), ~/.gconf/apps/evolution and ~./local/share/evolution. Then I reboot. (this is key) After I start evolution everything is new. I can make contact folders and they seems to work fine. I can add and delete contacts etc. Now If I import vcards created from evolution 2.30.1.2as way to preserve all the contacts)and try to restore the folders something weird happens: the contacts transfer to the folder specified but they are also transfer to the other folders. If I delete the contacts in one folder all the duplicates are also gone. If I tried to delete the folders I can not do it

OpenSUSE Install :: Migrated To 11.3 - Now Shutdown Freezes Up

Sep 26, 2010

Yesterday I migrated from 11.0 to 11.3 (32-bit version) and began customizing personal desktop settings once everything seemed to be working OK. Today I continued customizing the personal desktop settings. Now everything freezes up during shutdown.

The screen goes blank with the arrow pointer frozen in place. Hitting enter or ctrl-alt-esc has no effect. One time, I walked away for 30 minutes to see if it would resolve itself, but there was no effect.

I saw someone is having a similar problem with the 64-bit version, but there were no responses. Where do I go from here?

Debian Configuration :: Accidentally Dist-upgraded Production Server To Unstable?

Apr 20, 2011

I made the terrible mistake of upgrading my live Debian Lenny web server with the the dist-upgrade option in apt-get. I didn't realize this was actually an unstable upgrade and now I have had to make all sorts of choices of what configuration files to keep or upgrade ect. The apache conf files were actually bad after the upgrade and I had to replace them with the backups (phew) and the system is currently still up and running. However my virtualmin installation is no longer working due to a issue with perl ( but thats another question I guess to ask somewhere else maybe ). Anyways... I'm very scared to restart because my server is co-located somewhere else and Im the only one who has ever worked on this server so I would need to go there and fix it myself if it doesn't restart. Basically I have two questions.. is there an easy way to move back to stable packages..If so is this recommended?

And also I'm currently trying to fix some broken dependencies in the package manager but when I run "sudo aptitude -f install" It keeps telling me it is going to remove all of these packages (listed below), some of which I know are very important to the system and I cannot figure out why it would keep trying to do this. I get an error on "phonon-backend-xine" whenever it tries to upgrade just saying this

"(gtk-update-icon-cache:12343): GdkPixbuf-WARNING **: Cannot open pixbuf loader module file '/usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache': No such file or directory"

I installed some desktop related packages a while back like gnome-desktop and I know the package is related to this, but all I really care about is making sure the server stays online and not about the desktop packages. I tried just removing kdebase-runtime and anything else that is dependent on it, but it wont let me do anything at all without fixing this broken package.

I really would just like to go back to lenny stable again but I know its probably too late since I already had it install a new kernel and grub 2 (auto configuring my new grub.list)..

Debian Configuration :: Unstable Internet Connection Squeeze - Realtek Adapter

Jul 14, 2011

I'm going to start using Debian as my desktop system rather than Ubuntu since I'm not really liking all the crazy eye candy and just wanted a fast and simple system. My main problem is networking, I guess I'll start off with my system specs and other information for problem solving.

My specs are:

- Intel Core i7 2600K CPU
- Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P-B3 Motherboard
- 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM

I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B Ethernet Adapter builtin to my motherboad which I am using, I could only get a basic connection, by basic I mean that it allowed me to connect to my local area network but not the internet. I then modified /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to change to managed=true this allowed me to use the internet, but the problem is, that it is a very unstable connection, the speed is very slow and it drops a lot! I have to carry on running /etc/init.d/network-manager restart twice to get my connection back, which lasts for about a minute.

Debian :: Can't Remove Wine - Apt-get Bricked - Could Not Perform Immediate Configuration On 'wine-unstable'

Feb 16, 2011

while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :

dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb

The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :

dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb

This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. General :: Migrated From Ext3-disk To A Ext4 Disk - Warning: Unable To Open An Initial Console

Feb 4, 2010

OS: Debian unstable 32bit, kernel 2.6.32-2, grub 1.98 from late january 2010 (only have working net-access from work now, so I am grabbing information from memory). EXT3 and EXT4 support is compiled into the kernel along with chipset/scsi/sata support (not as modules), and I have tested to boot ext3 with it before proceeding. Prereq: my old disk started to have too much S.M.A.R.T errors, so I bought another one, put in a USB cabinet, added swap and ext4 partition/filesystem to it, and copied over all data from the old system to the new that was mounted at /dest using the command "find ./ -xdev -print0 | cpio -paV0 /dest". Swiched disks, so I now have the ext4 disk sitting at /dev/sda (partitions: sda1 => ext4, sda2 => swap), and booted into rescue-mode from cdrom, using /dev/sda1 as root with a shell on. After doing this, I performed the following commands:

mount --bind /dev /dest/dev
chroot /dest

modified the /etc/default/grub to instruct the kernel to boot using ext4, ran grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
ran update-grub to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg (which looks as it should) After doing this, grub finds my partition and mounts it. It however stalls with the message: "warning: unable to open an initial console" and does nothing after this point. I have no ramdisk, but my old kernel booted fine from ext3 (and still does if I copy it to a ext3 partition), and since the ext4 support is compiled into the kernel - should I really need a ramdisk?

Fedora :: KVM Has Become Unstable / What To Do?

Jul 30, 2010

Has anyone else experienced problems with KVM in the last few days?
I've been running KVM VMs for the last year. Until sometime in the last few days they've been working fine. I have three F13 systems that I'm running KVM on, an iCore7 with a CentOS5.5 VM, a Core 2 with a CentOS5.5 VM and another Core2 with an XP VM. I haven't seen any problems with the iCore7 system but the two Core2 systems are both exhibiting serious problems.

The CentOS VM is hanging. I can ping it but I can't ssh into it anymore. Prior to that state I was able to ssh in put I couldn't do a ps. Eventually I couldn't ssh in anymore. This is repeatable, I've rebooted the system a couple of times and restarted the VM, it always crashes in the same way.

The XP VM is running but the networking is behaving strangely. Basic networking is working but I can't access the Workgroup although I can access network mounted SAMBA shares that I had previously setup. This could be a SAMBA issue but it started happening at the same time as my other problems.

Another problem that I had was that the virtual disks on multiple VMs on both systems became unbootable. I was able to fix this by removing the disks and then adding them back.

Ubuntu :: Clusterssh Unstable KDE 4.3.2?

Feb 2, 2010

In one of the last KDE 4 updates, or perhaps when moving from intrepid to karmic, using the application "clusterssh" has become completely unstable. Some of the symptoms I have experienced:

1. Window focus problems. Clicking on a single xterm window from a group of xterms controlled by clusterssh does not switch focus to that window. Focus stays on the clusterssh application, so output is still directed to all xterms. Previously, I could interact with a single xterm, or with all of them.

2. Clipboard problems. After using clusterssh for awhile, and perhaps using the clipboard within clusterssh cutting and pasting between other applications completely fails. The only work-around is to completely log out of your kde session, hence killing your clusterssh sessions.

3. xterm window manipulation. At some point during a clusterssh session, all xterm windows become locked in place. You can't move them at all. This also leads to focus problems described above. The work-around for this is to switch virtual desktops, and then switch back to your clusterssh session, and now the windows can be manipulated and re-organized again.

Ubuntu :: Vino 2.28.2 Unstable On 10.4?

May 5, 2011

I have a Linux box with Ubuntu 10.4 that I use basically to play music and download files. It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard, the only way I access it is using Ultra VNC. Yesterday, the automatic update service offered to update Vino (among other things) to version 2.28.2 and, as usual, I accepted.

After the update Ultra VNC has had trouble negotiating the protocol with Vino. The only way I got it to work was to force using Tight as the compression method, which provides a crappy image quality. Besides that, at some unexpected moment, the connection just dies.

Can anyone help me to:
1.- Solve this issue with the current Vino version or
2.- Go back to the previous version that was working perfectly.
