Any idea if there is a kernel 2.6.37 stable, for Squeeze? Packaged one preferably , if an address is given for download, if there is one.

I'm going to start using Debian as my desktop system rather than Ubuntu since I'm not really liking all the crazy eye candy and just wanted a fast and simple system. My main problem is networking, I guess I'll start off with my system specs and other information for problem solving.
My specs are:
- Intel Core i7 2600K CPU
- Gigabyte Z68X-UD3P-B3 Motherboard
- 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
I have a Realtek RTL8111/8168B Ethernet Adapter builtin to my motherboad which I am using, I could only get a basic connection, by basic I mean that it allowed me to connect to my local area network but not the internet. I then modified /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf to change to managed=true this allowed me to use the internet, but the problem is, that it is a very unstable connection, the speed is very slow and it drops a lot! I have to carry on running /etc/init.d/network-manager restart twice to get my connection back, which lasts for about a minute.

I've just install debian squeeze version, or the testing one, but I am not really happy with it. Is not listening me all the time. If I install the debian stable I don't have internet connection. Is it possible to update the kernel somehow using the testing version?

What is the difference between Sid (unstable) and Squeeze (testing)?
Is it better to download Squeeze(testing) rather than Lenny(stable) because the software is more up to date?
Or would I want to get Sid? How unstable is it?
This is for a desktop by the way.

I searched the forum for this, but didn't find anything about it: when I try to shut down the computer, it returns to the login screen. When I log back in and shutdown again, it shuts down.Squeeze works perfectly, but this is the only thing that doesn't work like it should. Is this a setting I should change somewhere?

After upgrading to Squeeze, which comes with kernel 2.6.32, my system encountered DRM error and booted up with a blank screen. This happened intermittently. Searches on the Web did not give a definite answer. It seemed there was a bug in the kernel and this was cleared since 2.6.31 but I am using 2.6.32.

When I try to run GNOME, X gives me "Failed to start the X-server" etc and something about "not detecting screens." and if I try to run KDE it just hangs with the _ blinking waiting for the next command. I only tried out KDE to see if it was a GNOME problem. I uncommented the stuff in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (because I had them previously commented out) but that doesn't help. I'm stuck with a GUI-less computer now . What can I do about this? If more information is needed, do not hesitate to ask.

I recently did an update squeeze and the next day after I restarted there was only a blank screen.The laptop started, the system installed, the wifi connected but no gdm.I started in recovery mode and tried;
# invoke-rc.d gdm start, and got the response that it was an invalid command or words similar to that.
# startx, gives me a blank screen with an unblinking cursor.
# apt-get install gnome, tells me that the latest version is already installed.
If it has any bearing on the issue, I dual boot with Ubuntu and that works fine.Is there anything to be done to fix the problem?

I just upgraded one of my non-mission-critical servers to squeeze just to see how it would go. Since the upgrade NFS is broken. When I try to start it I get:
Starting NFS kernel daemon: nfsdrpc.nfsd: unable to resolve ANYADDR:nfs to inet address: Servname not supported for ai_socktype
rpc.nfsd: unable to set any sockets for nfsd failed!
I've tried searching on those errors, but all I've found is that this has happened to others when no network interfaces are started; this is clearly not the case with this server, since other services are running and working on both interfaces.

I can only open xml files with iceweasel.
I cannot open using gedit. When I try to open gedit crashes. I installed xml tools plugin in edit but is crashes like before. When I open plugins dialogue in gedit preferences I can activate any of the plugins available, except xml tools plugin. When I click on it to tick the box and to activate it it turns to gray. I installed bluefish which is claimed to be the right tool for such work. Although it opens the xml file, it displays all the lines like each one is typed the previous. All lines in one line but not continuously. Just the one upon the others!!!
I'm not sure, but I think that I may have removed some necessary files: when I first installed my Debian Squeeze system, I totally removed gnome-desktop-environment and then reinstalled gnome-core. I removed whatever supposed useless and to keep the phenomenal orphaned packages I gave an "aptitude keep all".

But when Squeeze goes from 'testing' to 'stable' in December... does Wheezy get promoted from 'sid/unstable' to 'testing' at the same time?.
I started my life in Linux with and currently use Ubuntu, and it runs decent(barely). However, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, and because of strange little issues and increasing bloatware, I have been forced to strongly consider the "mother OS": Debian.
The reason for my original question is that I want to run whatever the current "testing version" is. And if Wheezy gets promoted at the same time Squeeze does, then I will just wait the 4 weeks instead of slogging through another install(I prefer fresh installations vs upgrading within). I know the test versions of Debian are a bit more active than stable, but I have used Ubuntu for over 2 years, so I have some experience dealing with Terminal commands, package management, gnome, etc...I am also currently VirtualBoxing a copy of Squeeze.

I've tried to Google my way through this one, but I'm a very novice Debian user (about 4 days) and can't find a straight answer that doesn't go over my head. I'm using the stable Squeeze release of Debian with the xfce desktop environment and having trouble opening .rar files (.cbr in particular) I just transferred from my memory stick through any methods I've searched out.
Currently, I'm using Comix to try and read the .cbr(s), and would like to use Squeeze (the archive manager) to extract. Of course, I'll take what I can get if these are a problem. When I open a .cbr with Comix, all pages are [x] icons, but there are no errors. Trying to extract with squeeze gives "command exited with status 256."
I won't be back online for about 8 hours, but I'll be taking my laptop with me to work in the morning to follow up on suggestions.

I have been trying to figure out some way of installing Squeeze with some assurance that the new installation won't be pwned from Day One--- and so far I have had no success. Even worse, I have been having some strange problems using SSL in my existing Lenny installation which has been further hampering my efforts. And which may be consistent with the hypothesis that I am in fact being subjected to an on-going MITM attack when I try to install Squeeze over the net. This possibility has encouraged me to keep trying to take reasonable steps to ensure that key binaries in my forthcoming Squeeze have not been tampered with by the time I finish the initial installation. I am seeking steps that can be taken by an average user willing to follow directions written by an expert user.
I found a very interesting recent Debian Security mailing list thread which articulates some of the same concerns that I tried to express several weeks ago. The scenarios which concern Naja Melan and myself (and ???) should not simply be dismissed as too implausible to be worth trying to prevent. I think Melan's thread is rather prescient in view of "Comodogate":http://arstechnica.com/security/news/20 ... estion.ars https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/03/i ... lent-https http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/0 ... ompromise/ http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03/23 ... forgeries/ http://blogs.comodo.com/it-security/dat ... ompromise/ http://www.techeye.net/security/firefox ... rtificatesOne of the fake certs acquired by the bad guys would have enabled them to mount a MITM attack on anyone trying to install updates to Iceweasel/Firefox add-ons via addons.mozilla.org, which I think certainly suggests that the alleged state actor intended to tamper with at least some software.
(EDIT: important new developments in that story:http://erratasec.blogspot.com/2011/03/c ... festo.html http://www.thetechherald.com/article.ph ... y-attacker http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03/28 ... aks_cover/ http://arstechnica.com/security/news/20 ... o-hack.arsBriefly, an anon who claims to be Iranian and who claims to have acted alone, and who suggests that he has some connection with political dissidents inside Iran, has claimed to have been the Comodo affiliate cracker. At least one pentester finds the claim plausible. It woudl explain several aspects of the breach which did not appear consistent with Comodo's conclusion that the breach was sponsored by the Iranian government.)

I installed Squeeze on an Acer Extensa 4420. My desktop is KDE. The problem is that I cannot mount DVD/CD in my laptop.
Here is my fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

# Use 'vol_id --uuid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

Now that the stable version of Squeeze is available, the newbie that I am is asking himself this almost existential question: should I get Squeeze or stick to Lenny? Some arguments in favors of Lenny that are coming into his mind are that there is more material, tutorials, in brief, more resources to find as to learn and solve problems.
But is this true and if yes, is it a reason? What about security? There is also this widespread saying that tells to always get the last release for performance and security reasons.Being in this position where I obviously don't have a lot of knowledge and experience to judge myself with all the elements, assessing thoroughly all the differents factors, I would have like to listen you opinion(s) on it.

When I activate Tor in Iceweasel, it forbids me access to the internet completely. Even attempting Google results in "Iceweasel is configured to use proxy server that is refusing connection".
I have seen this in Lenny, too - it was caused by activating Tor without having installed privoxy. I installed privoxy and everything was okay. In Squeeze, Tor is using polipo. Polipo is installed and running. I have not played with settings of polipo or Tor, the configuration is the same as it was after installation.
What can be wrong? I am a rather an user than a networking guru. I am connected to internet by means of DHCP, no local lans, no special routings, no additional proxies. I have already tired to reinstall polipo.

Alright, I have an Acer Aspire 5102WLMi that has an HD ATI SB which uses the HD Intel driver. My boss has a Compaq 515 with an HD ATI SB that also uses the HD Intel driver. Mine works out of the box in Squeeze, while his does not. We both have ATI/AMD chipsets. He has an Athlon 64x2 while I have a Turion 64x2. Both of our video cards and such work as-is. How can I get his sound working? I have built ALSA on it but still no go. I know how crappy Compaqs are, but he needs sound. He loves Debian, but he cannot work without his sound. I asked about this on the System Configuration forum, but got nowhere. Is he destined to stick with XP since we have a driver there, or is there something special I must do to get it going under Squeeze?
