I'm brand new to debian and quite new to unix based systems in general.
I just switched to debian from ubuntu in search of something different and I want to find a system that works for me before I settle down.
I DO NOT HAVE A SECONDARY OS
just two problems I have with debian:
No sound
Error message: No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
When I try to open sound from the speaker icon at top right.
I think it's a driver issue but Its not as easy as ubuntu was lspci:
My trackpad also does not work so I have to open documents manually if I don't bring my mouse to class.
I was trying to update my debian lenny and aptitude gives a whole lot of errors about files it can't fetch due to a 404 error. Aparently de files i need are no longer available in the places they where supposed to on de Debian-servers.It concerns 35 packages that can't be updated. If nescessary I can post all the package-names and versions (old and updated). I'll give the two first as examples :

I'm using icedove with the calendar extension. Since quite some time there is a pending update from 31.7 to 31.8 which is held back by apt:

Seems like the problem lies with the package libvpx1. The correct version (>= 1.3) seems to be installed but under the name libvpx2.

I'm trying to use TheLastRipper Linux port 1.4.0. It worked fine for a while, but after logging in, setting the tag, and tuning in, I keep getting the following pop up message:

After updating Xfce to version 4.8 the Xfce menu button on the taskbar dissapeared. If I right-click the taskbar and select "add new item", the Xfce menu option is not there! Is there anyway to get back the Xfce menu button in the taskbar?

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy computer: 3 year old cheapish box, Gigabyte board with onboard video and sound. Cat5 cabled to Linksys wired router to a cable modem. Debian 6.0 Stable. Network installation.
This didn't happen from the initial installation but I now get an error message each time I get the updates.
I first see the red update notification icon top right of Gnome desktop. I click on it, enter root password at prompt. Click the install updates button on the update manager window. The software progress bars show me the download progress but then I get the following errors.
An error has occurred and installing has been aborted. Error Message: subprocess installed post installation script returned error exit status 1
Error message: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured.
I cancel the messages. The notification icon then turns to the reboot icon. If I start the update manager again from the System menu it shows me that my system is up to date, so I suspect the update has taken place. But why am I getting the error messages. This now happens every time I see the new updates icon. Apart from that everything works fine.
I include my source list in case this helps.

So I have been at this problem for most of the morning and I have run out of ideas: I want to convert and mp4 to avi, and having uninstalled ffmpeg, winff and all other dependencies and followed the fabled guide[URL].... to install a complied version of ffmpeg, I keep on getting this error when trying to convert:

Is there a way to make a dialog with zenity which would show an updating list? Zenity does it with progress, but I didn't figure out if it's possible to do it with the list. I.e. for example, I want to monitor something, and update the dialog with new list periodically. Is it even possible? zenity can wait for data from stdin, but it just adds stuff to the list. May be there are some control sequences which clear the list in the dialog?
For example:

How can I instead of adding Bar, replace the Foo with it?
I have a problem with Transmission. After using it for over six months without a single problem, it suddenly stopped downloading. In the torrents that do no get downloaded, I get an error message Tracker responded: Unknown error (0) in the info window, tracker tab. This happens every time I try to burn an audio CD burning data CD seems to work fine.I open Brasero, click Audio project, drag a couple of FLAC files into it and try to burn, or in this particular case, create an image.A dialogue pops up where I am supposed to tell it where to put the image. I just installed ubuntu 10.04 although everything works fine I have a problem related to sound, When I click Preferences/Sound I get the message "waiting for sound system to respond" and actually it does not respond at all. Although, I have downloaded, compiled and installed linux drivers from realtek website it did not fix the problem. internet which is simply deleting .pulse folder and restarting it didnt work either.At the moment I am using terminal alsamixer for controlling sound level but even the maximum attainable volume is too low.

I installed the MOTU ffmpeg and libav ppa in Natty beta, the installation went through ok and media players all work. But I am having problems converting MP4 to MP3 (extracting audio) with the error message that libmp3lame unknown encoder. I checked that lame and libmp3lame0 are both installed. I wonder what might have been the missing piece.

my iwlist scan is normal. ethernet connection ok, wirless not working but does seem to receive. wifi radar lists my router ssid.
