I was trying to update my debian lenny and aptitude gives a whole lot of errors about files it can't fetch due to a 404 error. Aparently de files i need are no longer available in the places they where supposed to on de Debian-servers.It concerns 35 packages that can't be updated. If nescessary I can post all the package-names and versions (old and updated). I'll give the two first as examples :

Lately when I've tried to update my packages many of them don't update. I get nothing out of the ordinary when using the terminal but when I try to update via the Update manger I get this error message:

I've tried several different mirrors but get the same error with every one. Same result with ftp as well. Yesterday I upgraded to Wheezy and every package successfully upgraded, but today the problem started again.
I am trying to upgrade the version of dovecot on a rarely-maintained Debian machine with which I almost never have problems (ain't Linux wonderful?). The current version is 1.0.rc15-2, and I think the latest version is 1.2 something, but the point is that I want to be able to use the pigeonhole sieve plugin. Upgraded Wheezy to Jessie, by changing my apt sources to point at stable instead of wheezy. Ran upgrade, and dist-upgrade, all fine etc.
Then tried to update the kernel by installing linux-image-amd64 package .. seemed to work fine, but after a reboot my kernel version still says 3.10.23
What have I missed?

I have always used apt-get to update the system. Yesterday, I was doing some tests and one of them was to try to update the system using the aptitude command, instead. I ran aptitude update and then aptitude safe-ugrade. I thought that wouldn't be a problem, but I was wrong. This morning I found the computer just can't boot.

I have Squeeze in another partition on that computer. I can access the system through the terminal (the graphic is screwed). Is it possible to try my Lenny from this partition? If not, I also have a live cd for Squeeze. Right now I'm on another computer.
I am an old Debian user, ho just reinstalled it again to see how it evolved since my las version (3.2). I am sharing it with Arch Linux, And decided to let bot of them. I am using GDM compiled and configured in Arch, and removed GDM2 from Debian (i just like the easy menu.list from the old GDM). The problem is that when i update the kernel, it didn't fing GDM and drops an error message. I tried removing the distro-preconfigured Kernels, as i compiled my own 3.0.0-rc2 Kerenel, but i cant delete the previous ones. Now everytime i do an install or uptgrade, apt-get drops wastes some time, and drops an error message:

My internet conection is good, I've installed some updates months ago.
I have mounted an NFS share with ISO images on my kvm Server. If i connect such a iso to a VM (using virt-manager) for installing a operating system i get the following error on startup: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: could not open disk image /mnt/iso/public/Linux/Distributions/Debian/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso: Permission denied
The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?
I am having trouble upgrading and updating. When updating the file downloads to 99% and then stops. The error message is:

I believe this has something to do with a power outage while upgrading a few days ago. Most of the install completed after rebooting, all except the three 'linux kernel image' files and a few others. Also, as a side issue, Flash plugin and Flex builder are no longer working. This may be unrelated. Does any one have any trouble shooting advice for the issue?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a RAID5 array created with mdadm from four 1.5 TB WD15EADS formatted XFS and shared with samba. I recently upgraded it (fresh install to a SSD) from an old -stable 2.6.18-6 to a fresh -lenny 2.6.26-2, and since the upgrade, I've noticed I can't stream high bandwidth video off of the array over samba anymore. The video stutters like it's out of bandwidthI've tried using mpc-hc64 in Windows 7 and my newly arrived Boxee Box.
Everything is wired gigabit ethernet (Boxee Box isn't, but the other two and the switch all three run through are), and I can copy the file at 30-35 MB/s to my desktop, which is significantly more bandwidth than streaming a video consumes. Looking at CPU usage on my desktop and the debian file server, there is plenty of headroom on both. Lower bandwidth files play perfectly fine, either SD or smaller HD.
Since I installed to a new boot drive, all the other hardware is the same, and the array of data is independent of the OS installation, I can boot off the old system, and I can verify that it indeed does not have the streaming problem. Everything plays perfectly smoothly like you'd expect. It even appears to copy slightly faster (35-40 MB/s versus 30-35 MB/s).Is there something in the configuration of the system or samba that I can change?

Why does apt-get not want to work?
I recently tossed Ubuntu for Debian Unstable for my personal machines and I'm having trouble building Emerald into a package. I've already configured and installed the package (using the usual ./configure, make, make install) but I wanted to make a deb for future use (for myself and for others). However every time I try to run dpkg-build I get the following error message.

Network is OK, what is going wrong?
Before I used to make a copy of configuration file and give the end of the file name as 'something.conf.bkp' . Later realized it was a mistake. The correct wording should end in .bak and not bkp .
As per (See apt.conf(5) manpage, section DIRECTORIES, last paragraph.)
The Ignore-Files-Silently list can be used to specify which files APT should silently ignore while parsing the files in the fragment directories. Per default a file which end with .disabled, ~, .bak or .dpkg-[a-z]+ is silently ignored. As seen in the last default value these patterns can use regular expression syntax.
I just moved from Ubuntu to Debian, managed to get the WiFi printer working, installed flash player etc. Just seemed to have trouble opening files over the LAN, is there a firewall setting I need to set. Files work fine if i copy them to the desktop and open them from there but not over the LAN. I have looked on the web with no luck.
