I have an old Dell Latitude D630 laptop that i have just installed Jessie on. So far I am unable to get the WiFi working. I have followed a guide to add the backports repository but when i try to install the firmware i am told that there is no installation candidate.

I just installed Debian only to be confronted with a problem. My wireless internet won't work. If I click the internet thing, under "Wireless Connections" it says "device not managed", btw my internet works and it did when I had Ubuntu, so nothing wrong in that department.

In a hp pavilion 15 Notebook PC with Debian 8.1.After two hours or so wifi stops working. Network-manager does not give any indication of failure but some times a yellow question mark.
rfkill list wifi gives:

Hard blocked: no
ifconfig gives:

I am new to linux and decided to use Debian. I installed it on my laptop and have a few problems.First one is my WIFI.
Laptop type: HP Omen 15
Wifi adapter: Intel Wireless 7260n
rfkill list output:0: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
So wifi is not displaying
Kernel: 3.16.0-4-amd64
Debian version: 8.4
gui: LXDE
URL....
But they see in rfkill list the adapter. How to make this adapter work?I did this with no result:
nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
in file add:
#Fixing a bug that prevents wifi from working on HP Omen
blacklist acer_wmi
I would like to learn more about Linux, but before experimenting I need a working system. The plan for me is to run this as my native machine with vms on top of it with other OS.

I have some problems with my WiFi card I'm configuring for Debian Wheezy. I've used it in other computers successfully (It's a USB device), but this box doesn't seem to be able to recognize it or use it properly.
I've identified the card using Code: Select alllsusb with the output Code: Select allBus 001 Device 002: ID 7392:7811 Edimax Technology Co., Ltd EW-7811Un 802.11n Wireless Adapter [Realtek RTL8188CUS]
I've used the Wheezy docs to download the firmware necessary and it apparently is supposed to run fine with this firmware, but nothing is working. There was mention to a GitHub repository of a fixed version of the driver in question, which didn't work either.

I just installed the lastest stable Debian (gnome) today and what I was most afraid just happened: my laptop's wifi isn't working properly, it isn't turning on. This had already hapened on livecd.
In the laptop's chassis leds, the wifi led apears as green. When I click to turn on the wifi, as shown on the picture the button, quickly disappears and appears again not seeming to have any effect at all at turning on the wifi but not showing any error either!
Picture :
What's interesting about the wifi not working is that in the installation process I was able to connect to a wifi hotspot and it connected to the internet fine!
Now after installation was complete and my system did the reboot, I was no longer able to connect to the internet using wifi.
My wireless card is Atheros AR9565 and my LAN card is also Atheros.
Here is an output of lspci and lsmod which may have some leads about the problem.
lspci
Code: Select allquant@debian:~$ lspci

A couple of days ago I followed a guide online in order to install Adobe Reader and this guide recommended a specific package that needed the jessie repository, I added it (unaware the jessie was the name of the new distribution on testing) and so I found myself upgrading to Jessie, which is fine since is working quite alright, but since then I can't sent any document to my wi-fi printer.
I had no problem with Wheezy, I installed two printers: one connected to the usb interface and the other one to the wifi (but is actually the same). With Jessie when I try to print something and select the wi-fi one nothing happens. If i try to add a new one I can't since debian doesn't find it and I can't even delete the old "malfunctioning" one.

I just did a Wheezy reinstall (I just started using LVM on LUKS), but my Ralink RT5370 usb wireless adapter wouldn't work, even though I have firmware-ralink installed. When I click on the Network Manager icon, it lists my home network (WPA2 passphrase) as available, but clicking on it yields no result.
Before the system reinstall, I've been using the adapter with firmware-ralink without problems. As far as "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" goes, my system is up-to-date.
I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling firmware-ralink (rebooted too), but to no avail. The adapter seems to be undamaged.
Here are a few pieces of info that might be useful:
Code: Select all$ uname -a

I've recently bought a Dell Latitude E4310 off ebay. Wifi chipset is Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6200 AGN. I'm using Debian 8.2 with Gnome 3 and I've installed firmware-iwlwifi.

I've been installing multiple versions of ubunutu over years and now I better understand why I faced always problems with wifi configuration on these different baselines : Debian root of course.
Now on Debian 7.4 :
The Broadcom BCM4313 driver is not loaded by default (not free product) for my wifi card. This is stated thru the UNCLAIMED declaration
Code: Select all
sudo lshw -c network
*-network UNCLAIMED
description: Network controller
product: BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller
vendor: Broadcom Corporation
physical id: 0
[Code] ...
Unclaimed means : no driver found (no kernel association)
So I installed the driver located in the non-free backports by adding this target into the repository
Code: Select alldeb http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free
and install :
Code: Select allsudo apt-get update && apt-get install firmware-brcm80211
sudo modprobe brcm80211
Check seems OK :
Code: Select allsudo lshw -c network
*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller
vendor: Broadcom Corporation
physical id: 0
[Code] ....
I can't connect with wlan0, it doesn't work. I found information here regarding WPA2/PSK wifi configuration on debian : [URL] ....
so I added this setup to my interfaces file an got :
Code: Select allauto lo
iface lo inet loopback
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid Hznteam-Datacenter
# hexadecimal psk is encoded from a plaintext passphrase
wpa-psk 12345678901234567890123456
It's worth ! no more wifi network are detected and ifconfig gives no ip address allocated :
Code: Select allwlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 78:e4:00:4e:49:a3
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

My debian system does not have any wifi drivers unfortunately. I suspect highly that the driver is not in the 3.2 kernel so ideally I'd like to update to a newer kernel.. However, the laptop doesn't have a network port and I don't have a network to usb cable. So in other words: updating the kernel offline using a usb stick..

I recently started installing Debian and I want to download and install a GUI in it. For that I could use my university Wi-Fi connection. I was told that it's a WPA2 secured connection. But when I tried to configure it, it keeps asking me for a "passphrase". I don't have a passphrase! All I have is my username and password for the Wi-Fi. What should I enter as my passphrase ? I tried both username and password and neither of them worked.

Two years ago I setup a small ARM based home server running Debian 7, the system ran an automated sftp backup from my phone, a transmission server and a VPN (open vpn).So anyway I upgraded my home PC and also upgraded the ARM home server to a GB-BXBT-1900 as I wanted to run some VM's.My only issue is that I have been unable to get transmission working the way i want it... For example I run my OS from a USB3 32GB sandisk drive, I then have a 500GB 2.5 laptop hard drive to store my VM's and transmission files, the VM's run perfectly fine when directed to read and write to the sata drive but no matter what I do I am unable to change the default transmission download directory. The moment i do this the download will start, hit around 4MB then pause.Amended chmod and chown on the directory ie /mnt/500/Downloads, also usermod -a -G debian-transmission myuser but nothing I do seems to work, if i leave it all to its default directorys on the USB drive it works but i just cant get this to work on the mounted drive.

I'm was trying to choose between GNOME and KDE for version 8. However both the live DVD's fail to pick up the Wifi card on my system. I am also unable to use certain basic commands such as ifconfig on the live CD. I am completely new to Linux and Debian (of course). Pardon me for the hand holding. This will be my first install of a Linux system.
What steps I can take to ensure that the Wifi card and the network card will be supported - hardware compatibility test maybe? Is there a way to try before installing? This will be a dualboot with Windows 8.1
Wifi card: Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter
LAN card: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

I upgraded my laptop from Debian Wheezy to Jessie the other day, and just as before my wifi auto-connects to my router, and I can "ping http://www.google.com" just fine, but only for like a minute. Then the Internet access dies, but I'm still connected fine to my router, and I can ping its IP address. If I connect to the router through cable / eth0 everything works just fine, and I have full Internet access.
I assume there is something wonky with how ip address is assigned after the upgrade, how can I fix this, or trouble shoot further?
(I run Gnome desktop, with network manager).

I love using wheezy but i keep having to take my computer downstairs to hook it up to router through ethernet, i need it to connect through wifi and stay connected.
heres my problem, if i use live image and connect to network its fine but during installation process it gets to the network configuration, it will keep disconnecting at dhcp and if i try and continue it gives me the error packages broken due to it not staying connected.
MY WIFI CARD IS A TP-LINK WDN 4800
if i try and just do a net install then it doesnt show my wifi network.
it uses in both cases ar93xx atheros driver for installing, i just need to know how i can try and keep a stable connection over wifi so it can install over wifi so i dont have to keep taking pc downstairs to install it.
i done something that stopped me being able to login into wheezy i was left at black screen with blinking command line, i have reverted to mint debian until i can get a stable connection over wifi to install wheezy again.
