My debian system does not have any wifi drivers unfortunately. I suspect highly that the driver is not in the 3.2 kernel so ideally I'd like to update to a newer kernel.. However, the laptop doesn't have a network port and I don't have a network to usb cable. So in other words: updating the kernel offline using a usb stick..

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have background in ArchLinux though, and have successfully installed, configured and used it on one workstation and two laptops. owever, i just got a new PC and spent several days trying to get Arch to run on it. Finally, i decided that i don't want to spend my time on this anymore and thought that maybe it's a sign i should try other distros (even though theoretically Linux is Linux is Linux), and Debian has always been appealing to me.
So my question is, has anybody had any experience (or issues) running Debian on the hardware mentioned above? I'm actually contemplating Ubuntu already, because there's a chance it will spare me some time and configure everything by itself, but the pride of a person who used to configure Linux from scratch doesn't let me switch to Ubuntu yet
I am having some issues compiling my WiFi card drivers. I haven't encountered this issue on any other distros (including Fedora). I would prefer to use openSuSe however so I hope someone here could tell me how to solve this.I have a fresh install of the x586 DVD, fairly complete.The issue is picture in the attached image: basically I try to run a make and I get the pictured error.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAs the title says, I have tried both of them and they both freeze my system with no apparent reason. They freeze by just looking at them in the fist few minutes after startup and a hard reboot is needed. So I keep coming back to 11.6. Does anyone else have the same problem or is it just my system? By the way I have an HD 6970 in an AMD CPU based system running squeeze. And the reason why I keep installing new drivers and don't stick with 11.6 is a futile hope that anti-aliasing will work with compiz enabled.
View 10 Replies View Relatedi just migrated from fedora to debian, and i already love this system. it only seems that i am facing a serious problem with this graphic card.running on debian 8.3.booting my system, i do get this message:

already tried both, the open source and the proprietary drivers, and both cause serious problems.
i tried to install the proprietary driver following these instructions: URL...
after restarting the system i get a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner, and that's it.
then tried to install the open source driver following these instructions:URL...
but after restarting the system my monitor goes into some sort of a "sleep monitor mode", and that's it.in both cases i wasn't able to boot the system through the recovery mode, so i didn't know what else to do and re-installed the whole system each and every time i tried a driver.let's say i have installed the system like 5 times in the past 12 hours.
I got this message when I tried to get in WifiSettings.
"The system network services are not compatible with this version"
What should I do?
I just did a Wheezy reinstall (I just started using LVM on LUKS), but my Ralink RT5370 usb wireless adapter wouldn't work, even though I have firmware-ralink installed. When I click on the Network Manager icon, it lists my home network (WPA2 passphrase) as available, but clicking on it yields no result.
Before the system reinstall, I've been using the adapter with firmware-ralink without problems. As far as "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" goes, my system is up-to-date.
I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling firmware-ralink (rebooted too), but to no avail. The adapter seems to be undamaged.

I need to install wheezy nvidia-graphics-drivers because my video card (geforce GT 425m) isnt supported on the squeezy version. I downloaded the wheezy source code and built it on my squeezy system, some .deb files where created, the problem is I dont know which of those to install, these are the files:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have tried several times to get Ubuntu to work on my SX3, and I gave it a serious attempt today to see if I could get things working, I'm getting a new hard drive so this is Ubuntu's last chance - for a while at least.
I've gotten past all the minor inconveniences and has it set up like I want it, but my problem is drivers. If I go to System - Drivers I get a grand list of 0 drivers on my system. Things like the touchpad, bluetooth and WLAN are working, but any function keys, brightness control keys etc are useless. In addition it either doesn't have, or is running on really bad drivers for my screen and graphic card. My screen comes up as "unknown" - though it's usable. Scrolling is not a matter of scrolling, but "jumping", and the computer is generally kinda sluggish (which is odd since it's running quite fine on Windows 7) and attempting to play any video file, on any media player - or even ..... - gives you a fps of about 0.1. (sound's working perfectly though)
I noticed some thread about laptops that are incompatible with Ubuntu somewhere, Is there anything that can be done about this or should I just give up and go back to Windows 7? Kohjinsha has drivers for XP, Vista, and 7, as a side-note, if it matters.
Ubuntu seems to think my device is disabled. The switch is on and the blue light next to the switch is also on. I read up on this on other threads, but the solution involved using the cd. I had to install from windows using the iso and alcohol 120 because my cddrive is totally dead.

View 2 Replies View Relatedwhen i go into additional drivers, only two drivers pop up, both for my wireless card. however, i can only use the first one because if i try to use them both it breaks my wifi, forcing me to reinstall the first driver. ordinarily, this wouldnt bother me because it works with just one, but i realized the other day that the reason it takes forever to do anything internet related is because im getting pathetic transfer speeds. the highest i can remember is only 800 kb/s. ive tried standing right next to the router and it makes no difference. i know its my drivers fault because i get the same speeds at two different home wifi networks (both houses roughly the same size). my ipod gets a better connection. the driver im using is a broadcom b43 proprietary driver. the one that breaks the working driver is a broadcom STA proprietary driver. i havent bothered to try the second without the first because i just didnt think about it, but i think i will soon and see if it makes any difference. does anyone have an idea as to why my driver sucks? im tired of waiting 20 minutes to watch a 3 minute ..... video.

I have an old Dell Latitude D630 laptop that i have just installed Jessie on. So far I am unable to get the WiFi working. I have followed a guide to add the backports repository but when i try to install the firmware i am told that there is no installation candidate.

I was told that it's a WPA2 secured connection. But when I tried to configure it, it keeps asking me for a "passphrase". I don't have a passphrase! All I have is my username and password for the Wi-Fi. What should I enter as my passphrase ? I tried both username and password and neither of them worked.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Debian Jesse (Gnome) onto a laptop with a Broadcom BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter. It does not recognize wireless internet.
I have followed all steps (linked below) to install necessary firmware, but receive this error at the last step:
modprobe: FATAL: Module wl not found.
I cannot get an install past looking for CD on any of the iso's I've tried. I have burned many iso's of other distributions onto a USB Stick and installed them so easily. Yet when it comes to Debian it is always a no go with me.
I think that Debian being up with the times would or should know most people that burn iso's just use an USB Stick it is easier and convenient. Therefore, they'd write the scripts to use them too without the "iso" thinking it is an CD/DVD that it is needing CD / DVD drivers to finish an install else abort.

I have a USB wifi adaptor, [URL]../B...ef=oss_product, which claims to be Linux compatible. It was supplied with a CD that includes a Linux directory but windows-only documentation. How do I install the drivers etc, the device is currently entirely unrecognised by Ubuntu 10.04.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm was trying to choose between GNOME and KDE for version 8. However both the live DVD's fail to pick up the Wifi card on my system. I am also unable to use certain basic commands such as ifconfig on the live CD. I am completely new to Linux and Debian (of course). Pardon me for the hand holding. This will be my first install of a Linux system.
What steps I can take to ensure that the Wifi card and the network card will be supported - hardware compatibility test maybe? Is there a way to try before installing? This will be a dualboot with Windows 8.1

I've just finished installing Jessie and everything went well, however when I boot into the installed system the WiFi option says that the hardware is disabled. My laptop is a Lenovo G50 which doesn't have a physical switch. the odd thing is that during installation I'm able to connect to my wifi with no problem!
View 8 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my laptop from Debian Wheezy to Jessie the other day, and just as before my wifi auto-connects to my router, and I can "ping http://www.google.com" just fine, but only for like a minute. Then the Internet access dies, but I'm still connected fine to my router, and I can ping its IP address. If I connect to the router through cable / eth0 everything works just fine, and I have full Internet access.
I assume there is something wonky with how ip address is assigned after the upgrade, how can I fix this, or trouble shoot further?
(I run Gnome desktop, with network manager).
When I tried to rescue an old laptop that kept crashing (turned out to be HDD failure), a problem with the graphics quickly revealed itself. A graphical install was already impossible, and it looked like the image was starting halfway and wrapping around the screen, together with all kinds of artefacts. It's hard to describe, but impossible to work with. I did notice that all was okay when I booted into GParted live in the safe graphics mode (vga=normal).By the way, the system specs: AMD Turion64, NVidia 7150M.
When I had succesfully installed Debian using the normal non-graphical installer, the same effects showed up as soon as Nouveau was loaded, so I SSH'd into it to uninstall them and install the proprietary NVidia drivers. After purging nouveau and rebooting, the effects were gone! It clearly was a Nouveau issue. However, after I installed NVidia drivers successfully (X also started fine), I wanted to change the resolution using nvidia-settings which prompted:
"You do not appear to be using NVIDIA X driver. Please edit you X configuration file (just run nvidia-xconfig as root), and restart the X server."
I would really like to try and do a Netinstall on my laptop with it. I know I could just download the CD's/a DVD, but I would rather customize it for my laptop, and I've heard that's the fastest way. The problem is that I have to compile the drivers for both my wireless and my wired internet. I have guides to compile both the wireless [URL] and wired [URL] internet. I was wondering if there was a way to compile these drivers in a Netinstall (preferably the wireless, but wired if necessary)?
