Debian Installation :: Installing Gnome 3 From Source Files?

Apr 10, 2011

I just started to use debian at what i would call full speed as soon as i received my copy of the debian 6.0.0 DVDs. i installed it on two offline desktops, one for a friend. i have been able to install certain softwares that don't come along with the distribution such as firefox 4, openoffice 3.3, the latest jdk_update_24, and others, and i've been able to configure them to work well i think... but now, i learnt of the new gnome 3 that has been released recently. i've ofcourse downloaded all the source files at [URL] but now am facing a problem of how i can install these on to the debian computers (they don't have any internet connection).

Debian Installation :: Installing Live USB - What ISO Files To Download

Jan 8, 2015

I have a USB which I want to use for a 'live' debian OS. I have debian 7.7 on hard disk and will be using Unetbootin to transfer the .iso file onto the USB.

However, when I go the debian archive there are so many iso files for the particular debian pkg [URL] .... There's iso, iso.contents, iso.log, iso.packages and iso.zsync. Do I download all of these iso files?

I'll be doing a Code: Select allsha256sums <iso-filename> to make sure the downloads aren't corrupted. But when I use Unetbootin and get it to write the main .iso file onto USB, do I then repeat this process with all the other iso files for the OS?

Debian Configuration :: Installing The KVM From Source?

Jul 9, 2011

I have a fresh install of Debian Squeeze AMD64 which I'm trying to install KVM on. I have no idea what I'm doing so I figured someone on these forums might be able to explain it. I have already verified VT support and enabled it in the bios. I have googled and read about KVM installation but everything I can find is either confusing or doesn't work. Also I am trying to install it from source because I want to experiment with modifying it later.

Debian Hardware :: 8.0 Crashed After Installing ATI Open Source Drivers

Sep 11, 2015

The ATI/AMD graphics hardware is:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Oland [Radeon HD 8570 / R7 240 OEM]

I installed "AMD/ATI Open Source Drivers" according to: "[URL] ....":

Reboot after "apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree", the system automaticly reboot after grub, then went black screen forever (no tty1,tty2.., seems cannot booting). I reinstalled serveral times but same problem (having tried both cd/live dvd, debian8.1/8.2).

It seems that "firmware-linux-nonfree" is the cause, since debian crashed once firmware-linux-nonfree installed.

The problem went away by installing ATIProprietary driver("[URL] ....").

PC is dell 9020, i7

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Latest Mediawiki From Source

May 28, 2011

I downloaded latest mediawiki, moved the tarball to /usr/share/ exploded the tarball via

Code:

then

Code:

Then in your web browser point to local host 127.0.0.1/wiki

It will then bring you to the wiki configuration setup pages, and you may install databases for this package via phpmyadmin. im going to remove the alias to php my admin after i am done using it again to cut off outside world from seeing the php my admin login page for security reasons.

Im going to do this by adding a # infront of the alias in /etc/apache2/conf.d/phpmyadmin.conf and making it look like this.

Code:

My next to default ubuntu install says we should install caching, and pecl.

Pecl search in synaptic shows dh-make-php as first result. install that, then install [url] extension for mediawiki. i already have apache mysql and php installed, but if you dont have those installed they are requried.

download latest [url], tar -xf intl* to explode package.

## im clearly going to have to refine this.... php-apc shows up in synaptic, installing it does not stop the wiki installer page from throwing errors. going to try [url] to see if that resolves one

download the latest source of eaccelerator.
[url]

tar -xf eaccelerator source package to explode it,

phpize command tells me i need php-dev package, i pull the package from synaptic. i also grab libicu-dev while i am at it.

Code:

goes through, then

Code:

Code:

add to the top of the file the e accelerator info.

Code:

Code:

Code:

Then purge eaccelerator source directory and pure the tarball out of your system.

At this point we are going to make a database for the mediawiki by uncommenting the alias that keeps phpmyadmin shut off from attacks.

Code:

Then

Code:

Then point the browser @ 127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin

Then setup your database for wikipedia, i named mine wiki

Make a user, i named mine wiki.

Password your database, and follow prompts in the media wiki package

Comment the alias of phpmyadmin to disable the phpmyadmin pannel/address

Restart apache and your good to go on linking the wiki.

Ubuntu Installation :: Using Synaptic & Source Files?

So I've installed a dependency from source since I needed to customize its config (couldn't figure out how to do this to a package). Synaptic doesn't recognize that it's installed and the program I want to install wants to reinstall this dependency. Specifically, I'm trying to get Kdenlive, and FFmpeg is the dependency.

Debian :: Installing KDE Via DVD Along Side Gnome?

Jun 30, 2010

Just wanted to know whether I can install KDE along side GNOME in Debian Lenny? The reason I ask is Gnome was installed by default and I didn't get an option to install KDE during the text based setup. So I put in the dvd and to see if there was an option to install kde, and it does Install with KDE Environment (to that affect). Would it currently erase the current Debian installation with Gnome or will KDE install as a second desktop option to use?

Debian :: Message After Losing Gnome After Installing Mono

Aug 10, 2015

I installed Mono on Debian 8 using apt-get. Specifically, I followed these instructions: [URL]..

Then suddenly, my entire machine locked up . . . I gave it a few minutes and then cold booted. It came up to a login prompt but no gnome. sigh. So, I use apt-get to uninstall all of the mono stuff and I also did apt-get clean, apt-get autoclean, apt-get autoremove . . . and rebooted . . . to a login prompt.

So, I installed gnome using apt-get install gnome-core and then after a reboot I got gnome again.

However, every time I log in, I see an "Oops" message flash briefly and then the GUI loads. Everything seems to be ok . . . but I don't like seeing that message; it says something like "something went wrong, please log out . . ."

I kind of dug around /var/logs a little and there are some error messages in kern.log files . . . how I can get my machine back to the state it was in, i.e., not flashing an Oops message when I authenticate?

Debian :: Installing Minimal Gnome-shell After Stretch Netinst?

Jan 27, 2016

I've just installed debian testing on my computer (netinst AKA basic shell version). Now, how do I do a minimal gnome install? Minimal means, I don't need libreoffice or any extra bloat. However, I do want nautilus, gnome-settings-daemon and networkmanager (and of course, firefox!).

Also, is audio included or not in gnome-shell?

If I just install the gnome-shell package (with --no-install-recommends package), will it pull in gdm, Xorg, etc. or do I have to install them separately? Also, need to confirm whether my sources.list is properly set or not:

Code: Select alldeb http://ftp.security.debian.org/debian/ stretch main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main

Debian Installation :: GPU Overheating - ATI Open Source Driver Installed

Jul 17, 2010

First of all I must say that I am new to Debian, but not newbie on Linux. I am the Arch Linux user too, and I managed to solve identical problem on Arch. So, as I want to try Debian I am facing the same problem again. Problem is that my GPU is overheating. I am using Ati open source driver. I installed it following the procedure on Debian wiki. On Arch I solved it with proprietary driver fglrx. I tried the same solution here but it doesn't work. So I am stuck with open source drivers.

The difference between Arch and Debian (fglrx vs. Ati open source) is 10 C degrees. Debian Ati open source is much hotter. And ofc I am facing the low battery life too, because of this. My laptop is using much higher energy consumption with open source driver (almost double). How can I check my energy consumption on Debian? I read about some xorg options. I tried it, but no effect. As I am on Debian testing I am using kernel 2.6.32. Does this kernel supports xorg video energy consumption options?

Ubuntu :: Command Line To Copy Files From One Location To Another / Retain Source Files Group / User?

Feb 20, 2011

Is there a method at the command line to copy files from one location to another and retain the source files group and user?I'm migrating some MySQL files from one machine to another.I want to back-up the original files in the directory presently. They have owner:group of mysql, some have owner:group root:mysql and so on. To copy them under cli or Nautilus everything changes to root for I execute sudo cp or gksudo nautilus and copy via gui.

Since it is MySQL data I could simply do a dump of the database and restore it on the other machine. But there's about 20 db's and I want to do this via a copy for it will be faster - at least that is what I think.

Debian Installation :: Installing Debian On IBook G4 / PowerPC

When I put it in the CD-ROM it doesn't begin whatever it has to do. Do I need to do anything? FYI, I have partitioned my hard drive into two volumes. I would like to install Debian in one of them. I *do not* want my Mac OS X to get disappeared in the Debian installation process. So please help me if you would as to how I can (1) boot Debian minimal CD and (2) install Debian on one of the two volumes I have on my iBook.
