I installed Zim via Synaptic. Initially everything was fine. However, for some reason, it no longer works.
I've tried reinstalling it via Synaptic, but it still doesn't work.
The next thing I'd try is to compile it from source on my system. Trouble is, I don't know how to go about it!
I followed the steps from [url] to download and install the kernel source code.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was recently trying to install Ruby from source, due to needing and older version and having yum acting up on me. The problem is, the executable is being installed to /usr/local/bin instead of /usr/bin. I figure there's probably a way to change the install directory at some point during the configure/make/make install process, but there's no man page for these functions, and Google has not been kind.
Thus, my questions are twofold:
1) Does anyone have any good documentation (ideally, with examples/explanations) of command line parameters available for configure and make?
2) Failing that, can anyone tell me in specific how to install a source code's compiled executable to a specific directory?
I installed the audacious source code and now i can't find it I looked in "/usr/share/audacious" but no luck. im still getting used to the Linux file system so forgive my ignorance.

The issue now is that the nVidia installer from their website wants the source code to build the right packages for this machine, however, I do not have the src directory with the source code that it is looking for. Is there some way to give this too it now?

Now when I download the files, I leave themin the down loads folder, do i need to make a new directory? If so how do I do that and how do i call it up when I compile the sopurce?

Apart from that could someone explain to me what is the importance of files *.dsc , *.tar.gz and *.diff.gz in every package ? I assume *.tar.gz is the source. Is this independent from Debian ? I assume also that *.diff.gz is some patch you have to apply after you expand *.tar.gz in order to get a Debian specific version but how do you apply the patch ?
I have installed two softwares manually, from the source code downloaded from their official websites: Stellarium, and the Linux Kernel. The version of these is not the same as the one found in the official repos. My question is: does aptitude have knowledge of the existance of these softwares? Can it do any damage to them, in case, for example, I run automatic aptitude tasks, such as autoclean and dist-upgrade?

I have a project and would like to create a .deb package that brought on any computer with debian distribution installs it in your home user who is installing.I followed a guide and managed to create a deb package from my sources with FPM. But creates them with root permissions and tells me that I should create a script before installation to change the permissions.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just started to use debian at what i would call full speed as soon as i received my copy of the debian 6.0.0 DVDs. i installed it on two offline desktops, one for a friend. i have been able to install certain softwares that don't come along with the distribution such as firefox 4, openoffice 3.3, the latest jdk_update_24, and others, and i've been able to configure them to work well i think... but now, i learnt of the new gnome 3 that has been released recently. i've ofcourse downloaded all the source files at [URL] but now am facing a problem of how i can install these on to the debian computers (they don't have any internet connection).
View 4 Replies View RelatedFirst of all I must say that I am new to Debian, but not newbie on Linux. I am the Arch Linux user too, and I managed to solve identical problem on Arch. So, as I want to try Debian I am facing the same problem again. Problem is that my GPU is overheating. I am using Ati open source driver. I installed it following the procedure on Debian wiki. On Arch I solved it with proprietary driver fglrx. I tried the same solution here but it doesn't work. So I am stuck with open source drivers.
The difference between Arch and Debian (fglrx vs. Ati open source) is 10 C degrees. Debian Ati open source is much hotter. And ofc I am facing the low battery life too, because of this. My laptop is using much higher energy consumption with open source driver (almost double). How can I check my energy consumption on Debian? I read about some xorg options. I tried it, but no effect. As I am on Debian testing I am using kernel 2.6.32. Does this kernel supports xorg video energy consumption options?

View 3 Replies View RelatedTrying to get Fedora 12 installed normally on a laptop, but it's hanging at the aforementioned point during installation. The mouse cursor is movable and the system appears to be fully working. The progress bar isn't moving and there is nowhere to either shut down the PC or access the terminal?? I cannot check any progress or see any log of what the installation program is trying to do.
It's a P4 laptop with ~700mb of ram. This is a fresh install from the i386 DVD distro. Why is it so hard to get a running system in linux when Windows or Mac is ready to go in about an hour? I've spent a good 3 hours trying to find my way around this latest problem and I am SO close to giving up. What a waste of my time linux has been so far.
