I want to modify the source code of the kernel so that the new compiled kernel should disable USB ports.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have the source of the application I want to modify, as well as the list of dependencies I need in order to compile. I got the source code for those and compiled/installed them. I'm fairly sure that all of the dependencies are installed. However, when I go to run the compiler it crashes while parsing some of the code.
I had the application installed before, and it ran. After tinkering around trying to get the source to compile, the app no longer runs either. It crashes, and if run from the CLI, spits out something about not finding one of the files from the SDL library.
So obviously I did something wrong to mess everything up, because I'm in a deeper hole than when I started. Anyone know how I would go about fixing this? Or even starting with a clean slate so that I can have another go at it?
I'd like to create a custom squeeze kernel. Is it a really bad idea to edit to edit the kernel config file directly instead of using "make config", "make menuconfig" or "make gconfig"? My problem is I missing a search function, for example in "make menuconfig" and cannot find some entries.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI read that xinetd listens on the service port and passes incoming traffic to the service (ftpd) via stdin. However, the ftpd source code reads its input from a socket not from stdin.
Am I to conclude that in order to be managed by xinetd, the source code for ftpd (or telnetd etc..) must be modified or recompiled to take its input from stdin??
is there anyway to modify the way gnome-deskbar look? It's not bad but when I do alt+f3 the search looks really bad with its blue background and his magnifier icon.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI attempted to install from source. Following the instructions on the gnome-do website verbatim, I received several errors. Gnome-do was installed (in Gnome menu), but would not run. Realizing I was over my head and was out of time, I ran "sudo make uninstall", restarted my machine for good measure, then installed gnome-do from my software manager. It still won't run. Running gnome-do from terminal gives the same error as when I attempted to install from source:

I used purged gnome-do and plugins, restarted, and reinstalled, but am experiencing the same problem.
I have run into problems building GNOME Shell from source on the Lucid Lynx. The Lynx has GNOME 2.30, correct? Well, ~/gnome-shell-build-setup.sh tells me that "GNOME 2.26 or newer is required to build GNOME Shell" when I already have 2.30. Just look at this screenshot [URL]...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to build my own GNOME. The problem I have is that I cannot find the tarball for the GNOME source code. Another thing I've read on their website is that the way to build it is not the conventional './configure, make, make install', and that it has to be done using a multi-phase process. Is this correct?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm just curious if anybody knows how to change the default settings in gnome-mplayer from it using video0 as the video input (which is my built-in webcam), to say video1 (which is my external usb tv tuner). There is no gui option for this.
My issue is not being able to use it for analog video, though it's not a huge deal because I figured out the same very thing for tvtime (video0 to video1). It'd just be another option.
I just started to use debian at what i would call full speed as soon as i received my copy of the debian 6.0.0 DVDs. i installed it on two offline desktops, one for a friend. i have been able to install certain softwares that don't come along with the distribution such as firefox 4, openoffice 3.3, the latest jdk_update_24, and others, and i've been able to configure them to work well i think... but now, i learnt of the new gnome 3 that has been released recently. i've ofcourse downloaded all the source files at [URL] but now am facing a problem of how i can install these on to the debian computers (they don't have any internet connection).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install form source (gnome-voice-control-0.4.tar) the voice recognition tool. ./configure seems to go fine, the Makefile has been made bur when I try to install by typing make some errors appear.
code:
Quote:
[root@piotr gnome-voice-control-0.4]# ./configure
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes[code].....
Is there any open source virtual machine so i can study the source in order to create my own? i'm gonna write my own, so it doesNT matter if license does not allow further development of the code.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWe all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.
installed the fedora 12, but dont know how to use the source dvd to install the source package.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix on my girlfriend's computer, and everything went fine except the computer *thinks* it's got an 11'' monitor when it's actually something like 10.2". As a result, since Ubuntu windows now relies heavily on the screen size parameters, everything goes "out of the monitor": browser window, background image, etc In System -> Display, I see it's set as an 11'' monitor...do you know how I can modify this value to be 10'' ? There used to be an Xorg.conf that one could edit to permanently modify these values but now it's nowhere to be found
View 5 Replies View RelatedI would like to be able to change which OS is the default for grub to boot, and I would like to be able to do so easily from either Ubuntu or Windows. I suspect that this may be possible if I put /boot on an ntfs or FAT32 partition (though I do not wish to install Ubuntu itself on such a partition). There I would put multiple versions of menu.lst specifying different defaults. Then, before a restart, I can run a script which will copy, as the 'true' menu.lst, the one which specifies the desired default for my next boot.
Is this possible? If so, what do I need to worry about? (I must admit that it is unclear to me how the code in the MBR even finds the correct menu.lst.)
There is a thing I have worried about with a dual booted system and which I suspect I do not need to worry about. However, I would like to be reassured. I have ntfs partitions and removable drives which both Windows and Ubuntu can access. If a crash occurs which leaves a drive "dirty" (e.g., after a power fail), I am assured that if I reboot the OS in which the crash occurred, it will realize that the drive is "dirty" and will take measures to assure that no corruption will ensue. However, I am not so sure about the correct response if the next OS I boot is different from the one that crashed. I think Ubuntu and Windows both use the same convention for noting that a drive is "dirty", in which case I am worrying about nothing.
The relevance of the above worry in this menu.lst context is that, if it is important to reboot the same OS after a crash, then I would also include for each OS on _startup_ a script that would make itself be the default for a next boot.

I've never been able to touch or modify anything in USR. Now it's being a problem, as wine installed itself like 8 times and won't run right. It won't let me delete the files.
How do I get permission to do stuff on USR?
EDIT: I'm set as "administrator" and I've given myself every right, however frivolous or useless. I still can't do anything on usr.
there's a way to modify some value in gconf in a terminal? I want to make a configuration file.

i want to change the size of mouse pointer i use right click on the desktop then change desktop background then choose Themes --> customize then i draw from small to large and the pointer get large only in windows like firefox but when i get the pointer on desktop.
I installed Ubuntu onto my computer, I downloaded all of the major appearance applications like Tweak. Using Tweak, I modified the login screen to have a custom wallpaper and no sound to play when I login, and it worked perfectly. When I re-installed Ubuntu after that first time (I re-installed it because I totally screwed with the GUI) and every time after that, I go to use Tweak and it still allows me the option to modie login screen. However, after I make the modifications and restart the GUI, the login screen background is just a blank purple wallpaper and the login sound still plays when I login (both are things I didn't select). I open up Tweak and the modifications I made are still there, but they don't apply. What's up?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to run the lilo command from the ubuntu 10.10 boot cd? It doesn't get the directories right, as it has / mounted as the ramdisk memory file system, and / can't be demounted since it's busy. I can install lilo in the ram after booting from the cd with sudo apt-get install lilo. Mounting / to my sdb1 partition (where Ubuntu is installed) does not get the proper "maps" for the lilo command, since the cd ramdisk / takes priority. I prefer not to use grub, as I wish to use windows vista's bcd(edit) as the main boot selector and it won't boot grub from bcd to a partition; at least I couldn't get it to work in 11.04. I got lilo to work from the vista's bcd menu in 11.04, but had many glitches. Windows allows this type of proceedure from its recovery cds.
