I installed Debian 6.0.1.a on Friday, but the problem is that installing xfce installed a few packages that have nothing to do with it, like Brasero and metacity. I'm using the xfwm but why were these extra packages installed? All I installed at the time were wicd, gdebi, xorg and xfce4. Everything is working fine...but why the extra bits?

Now I have the Thunar file manager opening up by default even when logged into Gnome (for example when using Alt-F2 and typing in a folder name, or when plugging in an iPod.) I've searched around for days but can't find any place to set a default file manager. The Default Applications dialogue doesn't include file manager, only web browser, video etc.)

I have been trying to decide which distro of linux i want to use, and i decided to go with debian because i keep reading that it is very stable. I currently am installing it in in virtualbox first to make sure i like it. I wanted to use xfce instead of gnome but forgot to specify that in the beginning. The install takes a while and i didn't want to start all over if that is possible. I am wondering how i could completely replace gnome with xfce.

If i understood correctly recovery mode uses /etc/rcS.d which starts the computer with minimal services and the normal startup is /etc/rc2.d. What can rc3, rc4 and rc5 be used for? Can anyone run different desktops (gnome, xfce, etc) using these runlevels (i am considering that the base system install is the same for all desktops)? Where i can find information about the services that are listed in the rc folders, since some (hibernate, bluetooth, apache2) are not useful to me at the moment.
I am also interested to find out what makes the computer start at it's default runlevel. Is there a way to start rc2 (or rc3, etc) from the recovery mode? When i used to start my computer, it would load into grub, and then it used to get me to the login screen. This is something i would like to avoid (the login screen), and start at the command prompt. My startups are minimal since the computer is always on. I was thinking of 'copying' rcS into rc2 for a normal console start and then start rc3 or rc4 or rc5 to load a desktop.
I am using Squeeze, Gnome, default installation.
I've been thinking about moving from Gnome to Xfce for atleast something more lightweight and etc. But I do not know of any good ways to completely remove Gnome without issues and etc. removing all of Gnome? And does Debian Squeeze have Xfce 4.8?

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
I've Debian 7.8 and i tried to install gnome URL... I've used tasksel but after rebooting i don't see any change...also logging in with "GNOME" or "GNOME Classic" instead of "Deault system" nothing happen... i tried to run Code: Select allgnome-shell --replace and the gnome shell appeared but flicking,and to make it stop i had to reboot.I think i should try to install the radeonATI driver following this tutorial URL...

So I put in the dvd and to see if there was an option to install kde, and it does Install with KDE Environment (to that affect). I installed Mono on Debian 8 using apt-get. Specifically, I followed these instructions: [URL]..
Then suddenly, my entire machine locked up . . . I gave it a few minutes and then cold booted. It came up to a login prompt but no gnome. sigh. So, I use apt-get to uninstall all of the mono stuff and I also did apt-get clean, apt-get autoclean, apt-get autoremove . . . and rebooted . . . to a login prompt.
So, I installed gnome using apt-get install gnome-core and then after a reboot I got gnome again.
However, every time I log in, I see an "Oops" message flash briefly and then the GUI loads. Everything seems to be ok . . . but I don't like seeing that message; it says something like "something went wrong, please log out . . ."
I kind of dug around /var/logs a little and there are some error messages in kern.log files . . . how I can get my machine back to the state it was in, i.e., not flashing an Oops message when I authenticate?
I just started to use debian at what i would call full speed as soon as i received my copy of the debian 6.0.0 DVDs. i installed it on two offline desktops, one for a friend. i have been able to install certain softwares that don't come along with the distribution such as firefox 4, openoffice 3.3, the latest jdk_update_24, and others, and i've been able to configure them to work well i think... but now, i learnt of the new gnome 3 that has been released recently. i've ofcourse downloaded all the source files at [URL] but now am facing a problem of how i can install these on to the debian computers (they don't have any internet connection).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am fairly new to RPM based distributions. I installed using the OpenSUSE 64-bit Gnome live CD. I used the one click installer to enable the Nvidia drivers. Doing so caused the system to want to install about 700mb of packages. I am assuming these are "recommended" packages that normally would be on the DVD with Gnome. There is no graphical way to "not" install them (other than using the QT interface, which I do not want) that I could find from the Gnome software installer, other than to perhaps uncheck them one by one.
I installed Nvidia drivers without such issues by using the "zypper in" command. I would like to use the Gnome interface without having to install all these files along with any package changes. Is there a way to do so? My second question is related. When running a default upgrade, packages such as foreign locales and translations and the yast qt interface want to install which is making the download take a long time. I only need English. Is there an easy way to disable these from installing?
After reading quite a lot about this distro, I have come to know that Slackware doesn't provide tools for managing dependencies. So how do I take care of dependencies?

So I can't install Firefox, because it conflicts with Iceweasel, but it appears that uninstalling Iceweasel uninstalls GNOME (gnome & gnome-core).Is there any way around this? Perhaps telling apt that Firefox is an alternate to Iceweasel?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed debian testing on my computer (netinst AKA basic shell version). Now, how do I do a minimal gnome install? Minimal means, I don't need libreoffice or any extra bloat. However, I do want nautilus, gnome-settings-daemon and networkmanager (and of course, firefox!).
Also, is audio included or not in gnome-shell?
If I just install the gnome-shell package (with --no-install-recommends package), will it pull in gdm, Xorg, etc. or do I have to install them separately? Also, need to confirm whether my sources.list is properly set or not:

When I try to install the wireshark-gnome interface I get a notice about needing two dependencies. One is portaudio and the other is the jack-audio-connection-kit. Seems like kind of odd dependencies for wireshark. Do wireshark really need them? VoIP related maybe?
