Debian Installation :: Gnome 3 Failure On AMD A6-6400 APU

Dec 2, 2014

This is a new install of debian 7.7 amd64 on the following new hardware

MSI A78M-E35
A6-6400 APU

Basically I am unable to get gnome 3 to run (it defaults back to some legacy ver). I tried a few other distros out there FC17 worked but FC20 failed. Just tried Debian Jesse it works after installing linux-firmware-nonfree but want to stick to a 'stable release'

dmesg says i need to install firmware-linux-nonfree so i did that but to no avail. Here is dmesg:

Debian :: Installation Failure Using Live CD

Mar 1, 2011

I've just tried to install Squeeze on my guest partition, using a magazine disk that offered a live CD version with installer, which I ran in text-based expert mode. The process was not a success.

1. The routine for installing grub claimed (hd0,2) was the same as /dev/hda2
2. Starting Debian's grub from the Fedora bootloader with chainloader failed
3. A conventional start revealed all sorts of problems, ending with "/bin/sh can't access tty"

I can't believe Debian could produce something like that! Has anyone here used their live CD as an installer? Tell me this mess is down to Linux Format magazine!

Debian :: Debugging Package Installation Failure ?

May 12, 2010

I installed a packge redmine apt-get install redmine It went without any error. But I found later that it was not working. Another package I installed was red5 during installation it says it can not start red5-server. How can I debug the package installations. If there would have been some script I would have set some thing like set -vmx in it.

As an example while installing red5 I got a message to issue the following

Code:

See [url] for more information about dependency based boot sequencing. To reattempt the migration process run 'dpkg-reconfigure sysv-rc'. Even then it failed.

Debian Installation :: Squeeze Installer Yaboot Failure

May 13, 2010

The installer for powerpc is broken in Squeeze. If yaboot is installed, it will break the whole boot process. I don't know exactly what goes wrong but it is a serious bug. I tried many times until I found out that yaboot is broken in Squeeze. In Lenny it still works luckily, so I could get something back after a complete sweep of my hard disk (the Lenny installer could not do anything with the ext4 partition of Squeeze as it is not supported in Lenny, so trying to put yaboot back did not work from there). Let this be a warning to people and a reminder for developers that there is a serious bug in yaboot.

Debian Installation :: Intel HD4400 Graphics Failure To Start GUI

Nov 30, 2014

I have an HP pavilion laptop with core i5 4210U that has intel HD4400 graphics. I installed debian wheezy 7.7 after shrinking win 8 and freeing 350GB for debian. I went through the hurdle of making a UEFI bootable USB drive and the system dual boots fine. But once I boot debian, I get all the run time messages and then login prompt flashes and the whole screen is blank except for a prompt on top left. I can open a terminal but that's about it. I'm unable to remotely login (connection refused) from either windows using moba terminal or another debian machine.

I searched the internet and found : [URL] ....

I tried the apt-get but it failed saying:

Code: Select allE: The value "wheezy-backports" is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources

In case I have to install Debian testing version that some said worked, how do I get rid of my current installation, which is UEFI? Do I just erase its partitions in windows? Then what happens to its UEFI boot manager? Just leave it there to rot? If I install again with debian testing version, I envision some problems of the grub UEFI boot manager thinking that the debian 7.7 is still there and try to boot to it. I do have the partition images in partition manager home version 12 so I could just restore the UEFI partition.

Debian Installation :: Loading Missing Firmware - Failure To Detect Drivers

Aug 5, 2014

So, I am having certain issues regarding Debian installation. Since my Wi-Fi card, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG, requires non-free drivers not provided within Debian install image, I am bound to use USB stick during installation process to get those drivers, iwlwifi-3965-1.ucode and iwlwifi-3965-2.ucode, to enable Wi-FI on my system. However, no matter what I do, I cannot get debian-installer to detect drivers present on the machine. I have tried virtually everything - downloading drivers from multiple sources, renaming drivers properly, using ext4 instal of fat32, using gpt instead of msdos, placing files in /firmware instead of root directory - but no matter what I do, the outcome is the same. USB stick seems to be working properly. Am I bound to downloading non-free image now, or is there a solution?

Ubuntu :: GNOME Critical Failure

Mar 9, 2011

Ubuntu - 10.04 LTS
zlib - 1.2.5

Why does GNOME fail to start correctly after compiling the latest version of Zlib?

I have analyzed the situation. Zlib does not change or delete any file on the file system.

I have asked this on three occasions over the last 8 months and no one has been able to give me an explanation, so it would be a great challenge for the Ubuntu lovers. I am also EXTREMITY interested to find out why, because I have had a hard spot negative opinion against GNOME since this occurred.

Programming :: Why Is 6400 Baud Not Supported?

Jan 15, 2011

I desperately want to get away from DOS and Windows, change to Linux... however I need 6400 baud for a special dongle. I found out my PC is working in Windows perfect at this baudrate, but in Linux it is unsupported.termios.h seems to have no support. I'm programming in C++ and want to use 6400 baud.

With setserial software I can have a divisor of 18, then the baudrate = 115200/18 = 6400. However, I want to use it in my programs (G++) and maybe also in Dosbox until my program is completely converted to Linux... however, if Linux does NOT support 6400 baud this operating system I have to stick to MFC, which is terrible.

Fedora :: Gnome Root Password - Authication Failure ?

Jan 9, 2010

I just did a standard install of Fedora 12 including the specification of a root password and a user ID/Password.

When Fedora starts, it accepts the password for the user ID but it shows an authorization failure for the root passwword. However, in a terminal session the root password is accepted when I enter the "su -" command.

How do I get the Gnome Desktop to accept the root password?

Related to this is an interesting security issue when I use the "su -" command to switch to the root user in a terminal session. Apparently, I do not get full root privileges as far as Nautilus is concerned. Nautilus loads but has a very restricted range of files/folders. It won't let me access "Computer" so that I can drill down through "Filesystem", etc. In contrast, Gedit run from the terminal will allow editing of all files after I enter the "su -" command in the terminal window.

I have run "yum update" to install the latest version of all packages but nothing has changed. I'm downloading the DVD image of Fedora 11 but I hate to do a another total Fedora install if I can avoid it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell Inspiron 6400: No Wifi After Upgrade?

May 9, 2011

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 6400 which had been running Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) perfectly.Today I upgraded it to Natty and the wifi now refuses to work. Details: While no Additional Drivers were needed on 10.10, upon installing Natty it prompted me to install "Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver". Now when it's active I don't even have the option 'Enable Wireless' (only Enable Networking). If I disable STA the Enable Wireless option comes back, yet I can't actually search for wifi networks or connect to my saved one. The keyboard key to enable/disable wireless also does nothing.

I can take this laptop to somewhere with an ethernet connection for an afternoon if need be, but am currently stumped as to what to do. Obviously I know this machine can handle Wifi under Ubuntu - it's definitely a Natty problem.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Nvidia Driver Gives Gdm Failure On Fresh 11.4/Gnome Install (GT430 Card)?

May 8, 2011

I have spent ages looking at similar problems but not not quite the same. I have installed 11.4/Gnome (x86) and wanted to use my GT430 card. I went here: 'http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers' and used the 'one click' install for current cards. All went ok until I rebooted and I got a 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.846578 seconds' message. I got five of these in succession until the 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors' appeared and it popped me down to an init 3 login.

So, I deleted the blacklisting conf file so that I could get back in to Gnome on Nouveau (which I did ok). I then noticed there was no /etc/X11 Xorg.conf file so I ran /usr/lib/nvidia-xconfig to generate one (which it did) - but it made no difference. I am at a loss know after spending 8 hours on this. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. My machine is still at fresh install state so even if I have to reinstall 11.4 it does not matter.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Extending Display To External Monitor On Dell Inspiron 6400?

Mar 22, 2010

My brother has just installed 9.10 on his Inspiron 6400 and would like to have a dual screen setup using both the laptop display and a flatscreen attached to the VGA socket. Using the standard display options, the two displays are recognised and when the 'mirror screens' option is disabled then settings applied it works to the extent of allowing the cursor to move between the two monitors; however the monitors display nothing except a black screen and the cursor.

I've updated everything to the current version, had a look for restricted drivers (none are suggested by the GUI tool thing) and checked both displays work (both independently and as mirrored). I also had a look for an xorg.conf to poke around in but there wasn't one there.

Debian Installation :: Can't Boot As Root In Gnome?

Jul 15, 2010

I installed Debian 5.0.2 about a year ago, my first encounter with Debian and first serious look at Linux. I never got it right. Some software wouldn't work after installing. This week I decided to just start all over. I installed Debian 5.0.5 on a second disk. I seems to be better. Software that failed before works now!

Problem 1:
I ended up with two possible boot up choices in GRUB, but they both run 5.0.5 w/ Gnome. Why two? How do I know which to keep and how do I get rid of the other?

Problem 2:
Previously, I could boot into a command console by interrupting the normal boot. I don't get that chance now. It goes right to Gnome. I can't boot as root in Gnome. How do I get on as root?

I've been trying to purge my system from packages I don't normally use, like Epiphany and Evolution, and I think I have been somewhat successful but I'm still struggling with GNOME when trying to keep the gnome-applets package and the system forces the installation of the evolution-data-server-common and libedataserverui1.2-8 packages. What is the role of this packages? Are they hard-wired into GNOME and cannot be remove at all? Or is there a way to discard the packages and keep the one I want?

I'm not doing this for the sake disk space; I'm only trying to take control of my desktop to always have the most clean system possible.
