Debian :: Debugging Package Installation Failure ?

May 12, 2010

I installed a packge redmine apt-get install redmine It went without any error. But I found later that it was not working. Another package I installed was red5 during installation it says it can not start red5-server. How can I debug the package installations. If there would have been some script I would have set some thing like set -vmx in it.

As an example while installing red5 I got a message to issue the following

Code:

See [url] for more information about dependency based boot sequencing. To reattempt the migration process run 'dpkg-reconfigure sysv-rc'. Even then it failed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Debugging Java Applet Loading Failure

May 1, 2010

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04. When trying to run a Java Applet on a web page I discovered that Java is not installed in 10.04 and the SUN Java JRE is not available to install any more so I installed the OpenJDK and IcedTea Plugin.

Most applets work fine but one specific, for me a very important one, dos not. Specifically the log inn applet used in my net bank: URl... See login entry on top left. After entering userID I am redirected to a page giving the following error message:HTTP 404 - The resource cannot be located. The file cannot be found. This applet runs fine in Windows.I have started Firefox in a terminal window but do not get any error messages there when trying to start the applet. The applet runs fine in Opera (though slow start up) in Ubuntu 10.04. Opera does not use plug in but run the applet directly from JRE. This indicates that the problem could be in the IcedTea plugin.

Debian Installation :: Debugging ACPI With Gateway ML3109

Apr 25, 2015

Ever since I started to tinker with GNU/Linux on my machine, ACPI has been a thorn in my side.

I can't find any BIOS updates or DSDTs for my laptop, either.

The only distro I've ever gotten to boot without acpi=off is Fedora 20 with the 3.11 kernel and nohz=off parameter. Which leads me to believe a change in the kernel after 3.11 is to blame.

Anyways, I have installed wheezy 7.8 XFCE with LVM encrypted, but alas I am stuck booting with the ACPI=off parameter.

The installation CD booted perfectly, with my wireless card working (an indication of ACPI functioning) as well.

This leads me to believe that it is possible to have a stable wheezy install on this machine.

The install disc used the parameters: video=vesa :ywrap, mtrr and vga=788.

I tried these, but the boot hanged after "switching to clocksource: acpi_pm".

How I could track down the problem with ACPI on my machine?

Fedora Installation :: F14 Upgrade Failure Due To One Package?

May 28, 2011

I,ve tried upgrade from F14 to F15 using preupgrade, but I run into serious problem. Preupgrade downloaded all packages without problem and prompt me to reboot. After reboot installation process went ok. It was upgrading cca 1650 packages. But installation hung around package 1600 (almost on end) with message that openjpeg-devel-1.4-6.fc15.i686 cannot be installed and only option to end installer. After reboot I ended up with "kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)". It is still possible to enter grub menu, where I can choose upgrade to F15, but it fails again on that openjpeg-devel package. When I enter terminal after failure, I can see package is downloaded in preupgrade repo (and after moving somewhere else and running upgrade again it I got message that package is missing). Is there any possibility to skip this package installation or only option is fresh reinstall?

Fedora Installation :: Plugin Install Failure - No Package Available / Transfer Failed

Debian :: Installation Failure Using Live CD

Mar 1, 2011

I've just tried to install Squeeze on my guest partition, using a magazine disk that offered a live CD version with installer, which I ran in text-based expert mode. The process was not a success.

1. The routine for installing grub claimed (hd0,2) was the same as /dev/hda2
2. Starting Debian's grub from the Fedora bootloader with chainloader failed
3. A conventional start revealed all sorts of problems, ending with "/bin/sh can't access tty"

I can't believe Debian could produce something like that! Has anyone here used their live CD as an installer? Tell me this mess is down to Linux Format magazine!

Debian Configuration :: Compile Custom Kernel Without Debugging Symbols

Aug 3, 2010

I've compiled 2.6.35 for my eeepc, but I have noticed that resulting .deb file is 30mb large. After investigating i saw that modules (and maybe kernel) are compiled with debugging symbols enabled.I've checked my lenny router and modules there are without debugging symbols. So stock 2.6.26 from lenny comes without debugging symbols and linux-image .deb file is around 20mb.Stock 2.6.32-5-686 from squeeze comes with debugging symbols enabled - linux-image .deb here is 26mb. (I have used 2.6.32's .config file to build my kernel, then i did make oldconfig.)I guess this is what increase my kernel size, but how to disable it?Or maybe enable stripping of debugging symbols.

Debian Installation :: Squeeze Installer Yaboot Failure

May 13, 2010

The installer for powerpc is broken in Squeeze. If yaboot is installed, it will break the whole boot process. I don't know exactly what goes wrong but it is a serious bug. I tried many times until I found out that yaboot is broken in Squeeze. In Lenny it still works luckily, so I could get something back after a complete sweep of my hard disk (the Lenny installer could not do anything with the ext4 partition of Squeeze as it is not supported in Lenny, so trying to put yaboot back did not work from there). Let this be a warning to people and a reminder for developers that there is a serious bug in yaboot.

Debian Installation :: Intel HD4400 Graphics Failure To Start GUI

Nov 30, 2014

I have an HP pavilion laptop with core i5 4210U that has intel HD4400 graphics. I installed debian wheezy 7.7 after shrinking win 8 and freeing 350GB for debian. I went through the hurdle of making a UEFI bootable USB drive and the system dual boots fine. But once I boot debian, I get all the run time messages and then login prompt flashes and the whole screen is blank except for a prompt on top left. I can open a terminal but that's about it. I'm unable to remotely login (connection refused) from either windows using moba terminal or another debian machine.

I searched the internet and found : [URL] ....

I tried the apt-get but it failed saying:

Code: Select allE: The value "wheezy-backports" is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources

In case I have to install Debian testing version that some said worked, how do I get rid of my current installation, which is UEFI? Do I just erase its partitions in windows? Then what happens to its UEFI boot manager? Just leave it there to rot? If I install again with debian testing version, I envision some problems of the grub UEFI boot manager thinking that the debian 7.7 is still there and try to boot to it. I do have the partition images in partition manager home version 12 so I could just restore the UEFI partition.

Debian Installation :: Loading Missing Firmware - Failure To Detect Drivers

Aug 5, 2014

So, I am having certain issues regarding Debian installation. Since my Wi-Fi card, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG, requires non-free drivers not provided within Debian install image, I am bound to use USB stick during installation process to get those drivers, iwlwifi-3965-1.ucode and iwlwifi-3965-2.ucode, to enable Wi-FI on my system. However, no matter what I do, I cannot get debian-installer to detect drivers present on the machine. I have tried virtually everything - downloading drivers from multiple sources, renaming drivers properly, using ext4 instal of fat32, using gpt instead of msdos, placing files in /firmware instead of root directory - but no matter what I do, the outcome is the same. USB stick seems to be working properly. Am I bound to downloading non-free image now, or is there a solution?

Debian :: Changing Features Of A Package After Installation?

Sep 7, 2011

I was recently pushed back towards linux after spending nearly a decade in a windows only environment and I'm finding myself struggling. The reason for the change is that we purchased Kaspersky and the mail gateway is only available under linux. They advised Debian and Exim.

The crux of the problem is that I have a working debian server running with exim4 and kaspersky to act as a gateway mail server but it's not checking inbound mail against the internal servers address list. For this I need to add ldap support to the exim package but I'm not sure how to do this - it seems silly that I should have to start over at this stage.

Full details:= I didn't have too much trouble installing and configuring a debian 64bit server for our network, adding exim4 and getting it all set up to work, then several weeks of hot fix releases and "oh, it shouldn't do that" passed as we attempted to get the Kaspersky software operating properly. During that time I learned that the kaspersky software does not provide a function to check inbound emails against the internal server. Previously we did this with an LDAP lookup under the Sophos Puremessage software that Kaspersky replaced. Without this function the MTA sends out a lot of backscatter that results in the server being put on blocklists and that effects business. Kaspersky tell me this is something I need to set the MTA software (exim4) to do so I've looked that up and it appears that step 1 is to install exim with ldap support... but I've already installed and configured exim without ldap support. So I'm not sure if I have to start over by removing exim, install over the top or what. Also if I do add ldap support or install exim-heavy over what I have will I need to reconfigure everything I've done so far?

as I said, it's been 10 years since I used linux and even then it was fairly basic sendmail and apache stuff.

Debian Installation :: Upgrading One Particular Package From Jessie To Stretch

Jan 8, 2016

I have installed Package: gnumeric (1.12.18-2) in my Jessie/Mate system. It is very jittery on scrolling, and I was wondering if I should upgrade to the version (1.12.26-1) in stretch(testing), as there seem to have been a large number of bugfixes.

I have tried the following simulation command, but it gives the error message shown:

Code: Select all~# apt-get --simulate -t stretch  install gnumeric
Reading package lists... Done
E: The value 'stretch' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources

The documentation suggests that I may need to create an apt preferences file. I do not have any of the following files mentioned by the apt-get man page:

/etc/apt/preferences/etc/apt/preferences.d/etc/apt/apt.conf

What I would like to do is upgrade just the specific package jessie/gnumeric(1.12.18-2) to stretch/gnumeric(1.12.26-1). I do not want any other packages to be inadvertently upgraded to stretch. I have seen warnings that one can easily end up with a badly mixed system and I wish to avoid that! I also do not want to disturb the standard apt-get update, which I am running daily via anacron at present.
