I checked in the website [URL] and downloaded the recommended package for the java update, but I am not able to open it.

Ubuntu :: Install Latest Java Version - Java SE 6 Update 24?
Feb 18, 2011If you are interested, Java SE 6 Update 24 is available. The Check Java Version link in my signature will tell you if you are up to date or not. The Update Java Version link in my signature will tell you how to obtain and install the latest version. The 32 bit version install directions are on the left side of that page and the 64 bit instructions are on the right side.
Just remember to remove the current version before installing the new one as it says in the instructions. The remove instructions are below the install instructions. Also, in Step 9 - "Now you'll want to tell the system, that there's a new Java version available." See the note below it that says if you get an error upon entering the command once, enter it a second time. I have to do that and sometimes forget. Just thought I would mention that. These instructions are already setup for version 6 update 24, but they can be modified for any update and they will work. I have been using these instructions for a couple of years and they work.

Jul 25, 2011When I run a java application (minecraft) the computer occasionally freezes. I'm not sure which version of Java I have. The online java app for telling you which version I have says that I have an old version. The command line says I have an up to date version. If I need to update Java Sun , how do I do it ? I followed the instructions once and didn't work.

Jul 15, 2010I've purchased a couple of books so that I can begin to learn JAVA. Finding recent editions is very challenging, so the books I found cover JAVA 5.0. I plan to go through all of the exercises in both books. Which version of Java should I have installed on my computer?
Should I install 5.0 so that the examples from the book will work perfectly? Will I run into confusing situations or problems if I try the example exercises using Java 6?

May 31, 2010I have a Lenovo T400 and I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. After the upgrade I am not able anymore to start ubuntu.
I get the Grub boot manager. After that I only see the a black screen and sometimes a few pixels.
I tried already to remove 'quite' and 'splash' in the boot options. And I added 'nomodset' and 'fb=false'.
Ubuntu :: Download Packages For Update From Another Computer?
Jul 17, 2010My internet connection is one where I have to pay according to the amount of data transferred and Ubuntu updates require large downloads. I was wondering if there was some way to export the list of packages required for an update in ubuntu and then go and download them from another PC. (The other PC in question will be running windows).I'd love to know of any apps that can do this ..If there aren't any can someone tell me if there is a way to do this? I am just getting used to Linux but I still have no experience at all with writing shell scripts (which I suppose would be needed for this sort of thing).
So in summary, this is what I want. Synaptic (or any other package manager in Linux) should generate a file with all the packages that should be downloaded. A program on the PC with a better internet connection then interprets this file and downloads the packages creating a local copy of the packages. These local copies are then transferred to the Linux box which required the updates and the updates are applied..

Dec 3, 2010The last update of a few days ago messed up the update manager. here is the error that I get. I do not have the time to hunt for bug reports to report this and don't know how anyway. maybe someone else can do it.
Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Crashed During 11.04 Update
May 1, 2011I was updating Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 and my computer crashed/shutoff because of overheating(my laptop doesn't ever do this when running Windows 7 but seems to really need to be as cool as possible when running Ubuntu). the update was at about 12-18 minutes left(also i am using wubi to have it run alongside windows). After getting pissed off that i forgot to backup Ubuntu i restarted it to see if it would finish updating.
To my dismay it the loading screen looked a bit unusual and when it go to the login screen the word "Ubuntu" was flashing uncontrollably and the time in the bottom right corner was acting the same. i feel that i have totally ruined it and i also don't know how i can remove Ubuntu from my computer so that i could reinstall it as Ubuntu 11.04 instead of upgrading from 10.10. i still have Wubi.exe for Ubuntu 10.10 but i'm not sure if that just searches for the most recent version of Ubuntu.
