Debian Hardware :: Laptop Fan Doesn't Stop?
Jun 11, 2011
I have just install debian squeeze in my old laptop (HP nx6120). Everything works fine except for the fan. When it boots up, the fan is really silent but after a few of minutes it starts working and doesn't stop at all. The CPU usage is low (1%) with 53MB/512MB of used RAM.This is how I install Debian:_ During the installation, I chose to install the "laptop" and "base system" categories (the last 2 categories of package)._ I use FluxBox as my graphical environment and Slim as login manager.I have Ubuntu installed before and it didn't happen so I think this is a configuration problem

I have installed Squeeze on my laptop, an Acer 5315.The fans never turn on, and the laptop eventually overheats and shuts off. This is not a hardware problem, because Lenny, on another partition, works fine.I have poked around, and discovered that the temperature sensor, as reported by "acpi -V", and in /sys/devices/virtual/thermal, does not get updated. It seems to get read at boot, but the reading never changes, no matter how hot the machine gets.
Specifically, if the machine is cool, acpi reports 40 degrees C, and goes on reporting the same number until the machine overheats and shuts down.On the other hand, if the machine is hot (because it's been running without the fan), and I reboot, then the reading at boot is usually either 75 or 85, and the fan turns on during boot, and stays on, at high speed, until the next reboot, and the reading never changes during the whole time

I have installed Debian a few days ago and when I close my laptop, it goes to suspend, everything is ok but when I try to awake the screen remains off.
I am using Asus X51RL laptop (made in 2007) and it is NOT a hardware problem, suspend works fine in Windows.

I'm trying to install debian on my HP laptop but get the following problem...
After the live CD boot screen shows up i go to XFCE > install
it loads vmlinuz and init.gz and after that the screen goes blank
i tried graphical install, advanced install, advanced graphical install but those too didn't work
also i tried all of these from LXDE menu
but the same problem
My laptop is HP pavillion dv6
its got an ATI radeon graphics card (hope there's no problem with the display)
4GB ram

However the cd works fine with my old desktop computer
which has no graphics card
256MB ram

I have done a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. My problem is that at the login screen if I close my laptop lid, the laptop goes into suspend. This is not the effect I want. GDM doesn't respect my settings in gnome-power-preferences and I can't seem to locate any other way to configure the power preferences for GDM. I have had 11.04 installed before as an upgrade to 10.10 and I did not have this problem in that case.

I'm on an Acer Aspire 7535 Laptop running a dual boot with 10.10 and Windows 7. Although a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't seem to give me any problems, after a few updates, my laptop would lock up and give a black screen while using 10.10. The kernel panic seems to happen randomly, either taking minutes or hours to happen, whether I am doing anything or idling.

I'm having a very faint but noticeable electric-like buzzing/grinding. It is not the hard drive but sounds very similar.
It occurs when i move scroll bars, or drag windows. It is highly replicable.
The only other time this has happens is when i install KDE which resulted in me reinstalling. Something id prefer to avoid. I haven't installed KDE this time, but this seems to have started immediately after replacing my fstab file which i accidentally deleted. That's the only thing i can think of.

I have a box running Ubuntu 11.04 (natty). I have never run memetest before. Then, randomly, when starting up today, it ran memtest. Because memtest86+ is on a loop, it doesn't stop unless you stop it. So I tried restarting the machine - no good. It simply starts memtest again and runs the same testing loop. I cannot find any setting in the BIOS to disable memtest. how I can stop/disable memtest so I can USE my computer??

Every time I've tried to install 9.10, it will not run. I get "Grub - " and it just hangs there. I shouldn't have to deal with that. Why can't I just have a happy install like usual? 9.10 / Grub2 is not stable and it needs fixing. Grub2 sucks. It's in beta and no-one tells you that unless you do some looking. I've tried to fix it, can't. Linux really sucks for me right now.

I'm running debian (AMD64 dist), and I recently upgraded via aptitude to KDE 4.3.4.After the upgrade I found that I could no longer start X (using startx from my user account).I am, however, able to launch kdm from a root command line and log in as a user to X this way (graphically).I want to run startx as a user and I cannot figure out where the hangup is. I've looked in my Xorg.0.log files comparing .old to current and nothing stands out. After I launch 'startx' the screen goes black and the computer waits. I can hit ctrl-alt-f2 and bring back the text-mode terminal screen; it's at a point where it looks like X is working. From there, I can control-c it and get back to the command prompt.
I'm thinking this is a software configuration thing but I don't know enough about how all the systems tie together to figure out where the problem is.

I'm looking for some pointers on a method to "transfer" the song-playing from my laptop to my PC, both running ubuntu. The use case is: I'm home listening to some song on the laptop. Then I realize how crappy the speakers are. Here's what I do *now*:
1. Stop playback on the laptop
2. Get up, go to the PC, open the music player
3. Find the same song
4. Try to find the same point in the song
5. Stop playback on the laptop
6. Start playback on the PC (the PC has good speakers)
Of course now I'm dreaming of having a "button" I push that does all this all by itself. Can anyone give me some pointers?

I'm currently having problems trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop.I have burnt off a CD that contains the latest Ubuntu 10.10 iso using the exact way the website tells me to.However, I can't boot from that CD. I can, however, boot from other CD's. For example i ran my Gparted Live CD to create a partition on my hard drive about an hour ago and that worked fine.

Hibernation on my laptop doesn't work. When I try to hibernate (either manually or automatically because battery goes critically low), any of the following can happen (randomly):
A. During the hibernation process it hangs forever with a black screen (with or without some error messages unanderstandable to me) and never terminates hibernation. I have to manually turn it off by holding the power button, and when I turn it on again, it does a fresh boot.
B. Instead of hibernating, it just locks screen.
C. It (apparently) terminates the hibernation (the power goes off automatically as if it had succesfully hibernated, even if AC power is connected), but then, when I turn the computer on, instead of resuming it does a fresh boot.
D. It hibernates succesfully and when I turn it on it resumes succesfully. This almost never happens; it has been a long long time since the last time it happened.
I am far from being the only one and this has been so for years. The bug has been reported in launchpad by a lot of people a long time ago, so if it has not been fixed in such a long time it must mean that the developers don't think it deserves much attention. (Which is strange by the way, because an operating system with non-bulletproof hibernate/suspend is an operating system that you just cannot safely use, at least on a laptop.)
