i have some problems.. I set the laptop when I close the lid to hibernate and none of them really work. it doesnt "hibernate". the pc is on.. fans are on all lights are on i left it overnight and it got HOT i have to have it "shut down" when i close lid...

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 desktop version on my Lenovo L420 laptop. Now my friend told me that if I had installed laptop version on it then it would have recognized events related to laptop like closing down the laptop screen and all.
Q1. Is there any way by which I can upgrade it to laptop version?
Q2. What are the differences between both?
My desktop is a Compaq CQ5110F. It's a dual boot system and Fedora 11 resides on sda3 of hard disk (WD 3200AAJS-6).Both suspend and hibernate don't work, but the symptoms are different. For hibernate, after resume, there are some messages (??) about register errors quickly flashed on the screen, then the logon window shows but the system hangs. For suspend, I cannot wake up the system by hitting some keys on the keyboard. After I press the power button, LCD doesn't get any signal. I remember hibernate worked when I was using Fedora10, but wireless card did not automatically reconnect at that time. Also hibernate works fine for vista.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSince I have 3 Network cards in my Desktop PC I've configured it to act as a Router using GNU/Linux Ubuntu Lucid in combination with Samba so I could share my internet connection. It works on any laptop a connect to it using any of the network cards ports [regardless of the operating system installed on the Laptops], but when I plug that same network cable to any Desktop PC [regardless of the operating System installed] it doesn't even light the LED in the netcards. From the Client PC seems like nothing is plugged in the the netcards.

Whenever I try to do either, my screen fades to black and nothing happens. If I move the mouse or touch the keyboard, it comes back.

After installing Ubuntu Tweaks (that's about all I remember changing) the cursor disappears whenever I hibernate or suspend the laptop. I am running 10.04.1 and have compiz running but changing to less effects seems to have no effect on this problem. when I have no cursor the only thing I can do is restart and it reappears and does fine until I suspend or hibernate. Some hours later - I just found the setting that caused this. The tweak has a box that was clicked to disable the touchpad while typing. This caused the blank cursor when awakened. working now. This shouldn't happen, but I guess this is one to leave alone. Here we go again. cursor disappears after suspend.

The trouble started immediately after I followed the instructions to test out Unity. I was going to post the link, but again, noobs like me can't do that.
My Thinkpad T61 just got a Corsair X256 SSD in the ultrabay (where the CD usually is). This works well except for hibernating. Earlier I had a traditional HDD drive there which also hibernates just fine.After a failed hibernate the machine hangs with this message on screen:

Reopening the lid and will see a screensaver password screen immediately.
Does this means that the laptop does not have Sleep (or is it called hibernate) mode enable? How can I enable it?
This also happens with Debian that this laptop is dual booted with.
when i try and hibernate it says the space is not large enough however i have 4GB of space free and ONLY 1GB of RAM (it's a netbook).how can i get it to hibernate?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was using Ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 liveusb ver. and then someone unplug my power and then i unaware of it and leave it. after serval hours, i find it and the screen go blacke. when i reboot with the LiveUSB, i find it just same as not being used before. although it is what Live USB supposed to do if someone restart the computer with it, but i check the deafult setting when the battery become extremely low it should hibernate install, and why LiveUSB ver. would loss all data after hibernate as same as restart?

I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.
