My laptop doesnt support USB booting, has no optical drives but does have an FDD.If copy the install folder onto a USB drive, boot from a floppy and load USB drivers for the drive, can I then install from there without issue?
View 2 RepliesI am installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on and old Dell Laptop. The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card.When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

The problem is that the netbook has a broadcom wi-fi n that is not supported by linux for now because I searched for drivers and other stuff an I found that it is not supported. After that I tried to format the disk and reinstall windows 7 but the problem is that the installation procedure gives me this error: "windows cannot be installed on this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enable in the computer's bios menu."

Obviously when I format the drive with ubuntu and I put it in the netbook it's not working, it stops at the logo and the only thing I can do is entering BIOS.
I formated the drive with a windows os and then the pc makes the boot from usb but the problem persit...I still can't install because of that error :"windows cannot be installed on this disk. Before installing ubuntu the sistem had kaspersky antivirus and detected 1 Trojan, it could be that a virus destroyed the bootsect...I don't think so.
I have a HP laptop which can support 1600x900. But after I install ubuntu 9.10 on it, it can only support up to 1280x700. My laptop has a Nvidia graphics card. And i am using GNOME as my desktop environment.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 from my USB SanDisk Cruzer to my ThinkPad x60s. I configured the USB exactly as directed by the Ubuntu website's instructions, and booted the laptop from the USB. Things went well until the installer informed me that the installation was complete and I needed to restart the computer. I clicked on the button to do so, but when the computer restarted it displayed a list of error strings like thus:

Restarting the computer again with the USB brought up the regular installation menu. Restarting without it brought up a blank black screen with a blinking cursor. I attempted to execute the entire process again (format and reinstall) with the exact same results. How can I finish the installation and access the operating system?

I know Ubuntu can be installed from a USB thumb drive but I have a unique problem. My CD drive in my laptop doesn't work any longer and I have no way to replace it. I know I can place Ubuntu on the flash drive but the bios in my laptop does not allow booting from USB and not ROM update for the laptop. So my question is, since this laptop does have Win7 on it, I can partition the drive to make room for a dual boot, but how do I get Linux on the new partition with out a CD Drive or bootable usb?

(with working floppy disk drive all would be fine). I also installed WUBI, but the harddisk is only 4 GB, so I had to use the USB-Stick as the Ubuntu install partition and this is not supported by the Laptop as it cannot boot from it.
Has anybody an idea, is it viable to online-resize an NTFS-partition to create a small linux-partition for bootstrapping the install?? I do not want to, it's still useful, so when crashing the NTFS-filesystem is likely I prefer not to take this route and leave the laptop with Win2k installed.
Im looking at getting a laptop and dual botting it with ubuntu and windows and my boss said when he did that on his laptop it caused all kind of problems, but that was 2-3 years ago. Is it still a big buggy doing this or should i be able to dual boot on any laptop i get?

I have still not been successfully able to boot from CD. No matter if it says to boot from CD/DVD Drive first, it skips on to Main driver and starts Windows. It's not because I didn't burn the .ISO image right, because it worked on my desktop, which is ALSO an Acer, an Acer Aspire T180. What I am trying to do, is install Windows XP Professional, and dual-boot it with my Windows Vista. Only thing is, it WON'T boot from CD.

However, I have no Disk Drive in the G4, it was broken so I removed it. Now I have an iBook G4 I have tried using an ubuntu cd on to install to the said PMac in TDM, but of course after reading the Ubuntu kernel doesn't support install to firewire by default. meaning so far floppy & hard disk can be accessed. I am using ubuntu 8.04 .
I installed 10.04 (clean install) on a 250G drive (partitioned to 107G for the system files). It was working fine, until I wanted to install Window$ for the use of Adobe stuff. I popped the Windows XP disc in, it loaded its files, then I tried to choose a partition for installation. There was an error saying that I can't do that, and needed to delete a partition blah blah. I thought it was too much trouble, so I quit and just wanted to use my 10.04. Booted, and it says "Error booting operating system" I WAS SHOCKED.
I tried to install grub (but don't need that right? I DO NOT want to dual boot now), but the usual method ( the sudo grub; root (hd0.0)...) doesn't work ,because something like "stage1" is missing. I tried many methods by still the same error. The reason I do not want a clean install is that I did many fixes on my 10.04 so that it would work with my EeePC 1001pxd, and I do not want to go through that again. I will be checking my email frequently on other computers if I have a chance.
Does grub2 support booting off of encrypted partitions? I'd like to have an encrypted linux system, but only have space for one partition or logical group in my mbr. Or can I include that one /boot partition in the lvm group.

When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process.With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.
