Debian Hardware :: Black Screen Connecting Monitor To Laptop Via Displayport

I have a laptop and an external monitor connected via displayport. I can configure both displays via settings with correct resolution and arrangement. However, this configuration is not sticking, and every time I shut down the laptop or close the lid I will need to fight with black screens and more to bring the same configuration again. Basically, it seems that the monitor is "stealing" the primary role to the laptop's native screen (I have it configured as secondary, but also being primary the configuration gets messed).
After many trial & errors, this is the routine I have found to make things work every time I boot / awake the system:
1. Boot. Laptop's display shows the booting sequence.
2. When the login screen should appear, laptop's display goes black, monitor shows background.
3. If I press F9 to increase brightness, the brightness icon appears in the monitor, but it is stuck at the minimum.
4. The only way to leave this point is by pressing F7 (project screen) and then F9 again to increase brightness. Then the laptop's screen does light up.
This is when I'm lucky. Sometimes the configuration goes mad and I get mirrored displays and different resolutions, without touching the settings myself. Also, if I unplug the displayport I run the risk of getting stuck with a black screen in the laptop, without any way of recovering the GUI other than rebooting (Ctrl Alt F2 will still show the command line screen).
My system is Debian 8 testing up to date, running in a Lenovo T430 with Intel components. I'm not sure the monitor is relevant here, but in any case it is an Eizo CS240.
I am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again. When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.
I have an Asus z9100 laptop with an Intel 855GM integrated graphics chip, which is running Karmic (the purpose of the laptop is to be a MythTV frontend so my understanding is that it needs to run 9.x in order to connect to the MythTV 0.22 backend - I have installed and configured this using the installable Mythbuntu package) and the laptop is subject to this bug which causes random freezes:

So, following advice for similar freezes I've seen, I have added the following options to my grub menu.lst on the kernel line:
nolapic nomodeset
and I have edited xorg.conf so that it makes use of the vesa driver instead of the Intel driver. This results in no freezes and if I wanted to watch Myth on the laptop screen I'd be squared away. However, the laptop has a damaged screen so the point was always to output the signal to an external monitor via its VGA out.
When I attach the external monitor and boot with the setup as described, the external monitor is never detected. But I noticed that if I remove the "nolapic nomodeset" from the kernel boot line, it is detected. However, signal is only output to it during the earliest part of boot (when the Ubuntu logo is in the center of the screen before the full-screen graphic with the animated progress line), after which the external monitor goes black and all the display output goes to the laptop screen. The external monitor power button is still lit up green as if it has been detected and is receiving signal, but it's just a black screen.
get the signal out to the external monitor after the initial part of the boot process, using the vesa driver? Here is the current state of my xorg.conf:

I'm using Jessie 8.3 on Dell laptop Latitude E7240.
Now when I plug the laptop in the Dell eDock docking station, external monitor connected through DisplayPort and it is detected (according to xrandr output).
BUT nothing shows on the monitor (it stays black) and I get errors repeating in the kernel log:

I've recently installed Debian v8.1 and installed Nvidia driver 340.46. In nvidia-settings I am able to enable my second monitor and enable it/set it's position..etc. My second monitor is not being detected in Debian Display and is 'on' but only showing a black screen. I've tried researching and implementing various 'fixes', but I'm not having any luck.
I'm running dual GTX 570's with a monitor plugged into one each (DVI). I noticed in my xorg.conf under Section "Screen" I have an option "MultiGPU" "Off"; would this be part of the issue?
I've tried: - purging all nvidia drivers and re-installing - installing different versions of nvidia drivers - add nomodeset in grub
I like to suspend my laptop when I close the lid. I have squeeze installed. When I open the laptop lid all lights indicated that it coming out of suspend but the monitor stays black. It is worse since I install the ati drivers for the card instead of the xorg. It did it with both but worse with nonfree drivers. I can get it to come out by ctrl alt f2 and the ctrl alt f7. I'm running Debian Squeeze on a Dell Studio 1558 laptop, and I have my laptop set to suspend when my lid is closed. Resuming from suspend seems to work but the screen remains blank, forcing me to hard reboot every time. Upon reading this thread:

Where the script is for Gnome 3. When I plug the HDMI cable, the desktop expands to include both, but disables the backlight on the laptop monitor. I have to restart gdm3 or the laptop for the brightness control to bring it back up. First, why would it turn brightness to 0, and how do I change the default of that so it stops. I plug and unplug the HDMI regualarly while I wait for a new desktop and the laptop has to pull double duty.
I just switched from Ubuntu 14.10. It never blacked out a screen on plug in or removing. That means that there must be some way to do it, however, it used Unity and this is Gnome 3.
I installed KDE. It works as well. I will use it for now, but would like to get Gnome 3 to work. My default is gdm but I think I saw I can switch it to kdm.

Is there any way, how to make connecting monitor to my laptop as easy as it is e.g. in Windows? Just plug-n-play? I've just installed last version of Ubuntu and then connect monitor. After connecting monitor nothing happened (my laptop LCD doesn't get blinked and it doesn't try to use the monitor as a second one). So I went to Monitors configuration, where I saw "Mirror screens". I've unchecked "Same image in all monitors" and applied, also nothing happened. The monitor is still just black. Is there any application which would make this stuff easier for me? I have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 running kernel .26 installed on my Dell Dimension 2350 with 512mb of memory. The problem I have been having is, When I am using the computer mostly Internet stuff for no reason the monitor will go black then on the screen it will be at a terminal screen, kind of like when you start up the computer, I don't remember what is all on it but the last thing in the list was: checking battery state: OK after that the screen will flash in multiple colors and then it goes into a loop of just black screen than a colorful flash and back over to a black screen. the only way I can fix that is by holding down the power button. this will happen mostly on face-book on the games and just on the profile page, but it does happen just checking my gmail or play solitaire it does this around 4-8 times a day.
I have finally decided to reach out for help because I've been messing around for 3 days with xorg.conf and I'm a beginner and not getting it right. What I want to do is to use only my external monitor (1920x1200) via DisplayPort when my computer is docked. And then my laptop display (1280x800) when undocked. I am using Ubuntu 10.04.
I have setup System->Preference->Monitor: Unchecked <same image in all monitors>, turned off laptop display, and set External monitor to 1920x1200. After doing this everything works when in Xwindows. The resolution is correct when I am docked, and when I am undocked it defaults to my laptop display.
The ONLY problem with using the System->Preferences->Monitor is that when I start up the computer when docked the external monitor goes to the incorrect (laptop screen) resolution at the initial login screen. After I login the resolution corrects itself but it's messy with reinitialization of the screen and my icons being all messed up. I think this happens because these settings only take effect after logging in.
I believe I have to edit the xorg.conf to get my setup working at the login screen. Can someone please tell me how to this.
as after connecting thru vnc (any tightvnc or real vnc),after some time of the connecting the Linux server RHEL 5.3,screen goes black screen with X mouse movement,getting after some time login all the things are visible even we can open the terminal & any application thru taskbar option,but after some time the screen goes black with big X. eventhough I tried to disable the screen saver option then also is happening.
I installed Ubuntu on MSI laptop. Works great. I am trying to connect the laptop to external screen through the VGA output. When the laptop's lid is open - it works just fine When the laptop's lid is closed - the VGA output content is gone. i didn't find tin the monitors' menu nor in the power menu, an entry where I can ask or set the VGA output to be active all the time.
I recently installed Debian, using the amd64 Network Install .iso. I'm using XFCE4 as my desktop environment, and everything is working well... on my laptop's screen.
My desired setup is to have my laptop sitting on a well-ventilated shelf, closed, and to have an external monitor be my main monitor. I want this because I'm using my laptop as my "home" computer, so it never moves, and I don't like the keyboard/trackpad. My laptop has a VGA output, and I can get my desired setup on my Windows partition (not stating a preference ; just that the hardware CAN do what I want it to).
I've been working my way around the Internet for a few days, now, and I've got the commercial NVIDIA driver installed. If I run sudo nvidia-config --twinview I can get my external monitor to be part of the display, which is great, but it's part of a dual-screen monitor setup, which is not what I want at all, because (a) XFCE's multiple virtual desktops are good enough for me and (b) my graphics card is integrated, and I'm trying to squeeze every drop of performance out of my laptop that I can (1 gig of RAM; the less that my graphics card eats into it, the better). Plus, it'd be annoying to accidentally drop something on my laptop's screen, and then have to dig it out of the shelf in order to undo it. I'm not saying that I'm consistently clumsy, but I'd eventually end up doing it.
I have tried to connect my GMA500 based Acer 751 to an external dsiplay via VGA connection. I couldn't get the right resolution on the external screen (1920/1080) so I disconnected it and rebooted. Now there is only an "unknown" screen in the display menu. I have rewritten the xorg conf file per instructions for enabling GMA500 but to no avail - conf file looks right but screen is "unknown", low resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio, instead of 16:9. How to restore to laptop monitor - I think I can take from there to enable the right resolution.
i tried to install linux mint, at first i got 'out of range' with black screen msg but used compability mode and got past it and installed mint on my HD. a moment after it updated my nvidia drivers and after reboot I got the out of range message again, which leaves me in the situation where i cant do pretty much anything I tried editing xorg.conf added VertRefresh 60-75 and Modes "1440x900_75.00"
I have an Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM chipset. As I was playing around, trying to figure out how to get my dual monitor to work. The Mirror Screen was working fine, but then I uncheck the mirror screen option, both my laptop and my secondary monitor black out. I can only see the mouse, and it cans move on both screen.
I have this very frustrating problem... I'm trying to build a Linux-based HTPC (Home Theatre PC). I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty as the operating system, and it works fine when I have it connected to my 17" Samsung monitor. However, when I connect the HTPC to the TV via VGA I get a black screen after "startx" (I can access the console through recovery mode though). Ubuntu is running gnome, so I guess it's a gnome related problem?
I would have thought it was a problem with the drivers to graphics card, but since it's working on my 17" monitor I've ruled that out. The TVs resolution is 1024x768. What can be causing this? Apperently there's some difference between my monitor and my TV (forgetting the fact that it is indeed a TV, not a monitor), but what? I've previously run Windows on the same hardware without problems, and thought I should give Linux a shot. It doesn't look good...
My laptop screen will go black while i'm using it. I do not have any screensaver enabled. It just goes black (whenever) and I have to reboot to use my machine again
I am booting XP and Opensuse 11.4 all was ok until I changed my old monitor for a widescreen monitor, Xp works ok but when I select Opensuse from the menu it just boots to a black screen.
I did a LiveCD to USB install, following the directions I found at [url] When I went to reboot to the USB stick, all I get is a black Screen (monitor is on and lit, just nothing on the display) No cursor or command prompt. I've tried holding shift to bring up the GRUB menu, changing splash quiet to nomodeset, or just adding nomodeset after the splash quiet thing. I've even tried xforcevesa instead of nomodeset still black screen. Looking at the logs nothing is current as of the last time I tried to boot the computer, it's strictly what was written when I installed it to the stick. Other things I've checked/tried, Pressing CTRL+Alt+F1 at GRUB to get TTY, all I get is that blank screen. I've Checked etc/default/grub to ensure the timeout was higher then 0. The Install CD seems to be OK but I have (as it did another install successfully) but I haven't done any throughal checking of it (there was no check this disk on the first screen of the LiveCD) The USB sticks also seem to be ok (in windows though). Using the disk utility on the live CD I did check the file system on the USB stick, the "/" partition came up clean. Anybody have any other thoughts on this install, any thing else I can check?
My laptop was shut down normally, but when it restarts - it just shows the very first image (Toshiba something....) which is the screen where it says what commands to type to get into bios.
After this - the screen shows nothing more. All black, except some faint (extremely faint) lines...
I don't know - my first thought was that the screen itself was caput, but since it shows the initial screen - I guess it's not...
Got a problem with Ubuntu 9.10 and a Lenovo T400 with an ATI Radeon Mobility HD3400 and ATI drivers /ATI contol center. Whenever the laptop wakes up from power-saving mode, the screen goes black (with some jagged mulicolored lines).
I'm having problems with the screen going black on startup in 10.10. It appears to go completely off (no backlight or anything). If I press ctri+alt+f1 I get a terminal, then I can ctrl+alt+f7 and the desktop appears. I have tried setting the mode to the correct resolution in xorg.conf and I tried using the vesa driver, but it still doesn't work. My graphics card shows as sis 661/741/760
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 to dual boot alongside Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron. This worked fine and after restarting it seemed to be working normally, after the first boot into windows though when I tried to restart the laptop again I just get a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left instead of the grub screen.I'm still able to boot the LiveCD fine and tried to reinstall Ubuntu but the exact same thing happened? Anyone know what's going on/how to fix this?
Whenever I use the function hibernate or sleep - or just generally close my lid on my laptop, my laptop displays a black screen when I open the lid again - though it is turned on.
Basically, it hibernates/sleeps the laptop when I close the lid. When I open the lid though, it turns on the laptop, but brings me a black screen.
Just did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.
I have just "finished" updating my Ubuntu 9.10. (somehow I knew that something is going to go wrong), and now my PC starts, works fine for a few seconds, then I get a black screen for a moment, and then my monitor starts acting like PC is off.Interestingly I think that otherwise everything is working just fine and that I just can't see anything due to the black screen (monitor is flashing like there is no signal coming from PC).
