Debian Configuration :: Unknown Root LV In Gnome-disk-utility ?

Jul 24, 2011

Gnome-disk-utility doesn't show filesystem type, mount point, filesystem label, size¦ of my / filesystem.

I am running Debian Squeeze using lvm2. I have two HDDs and each has one primary partition, which are used as PVs. Having two VGs, each VG has it's own PV.

There are some LVs and all of them except the LV holding the swap space are formatted with XFS. Now gnome-disk-utility shows everything about my /home LV, another LV containing a whole Ubuntu installation,¦ only the / LV (and Swap LV, but I don't know what it is supposed to show there) is/are missing nearly all information.

Otherwise the system is running perfectly well and the Debian / LV is shown normally in Ubuntu's disk-utlity, as well as all other LVs.

DebianCopy is a copy of my Debian installation (different fs label and UUID). DebianII (again different UUID and label) is a copy too, but there I tried out newer (testing) versions of udisks/lvm2/udev and right after the upgrade it showd everything as it should with the additional advantage of the newer udisks-version showing my VGs, but after a reboot it showed the same behaviour as before or even worse, because the information about other LVs was missing too.

In the end I even modified the fstab. Originally it contained the /dev/mapper/vgbay... entries and I replaced them with LABEL=... and finally with UUID=..., but it didn't make any difference either.

Debian Configuration :: Installed Firestarter Firewall On Debian Squeeze?

Apr 5, 2011

I installed Firestarter firewall on debian Squeeze. Now i note there is a gui available in System->Administration which apparently does not need to be running all the time - its not set up to start on boot. When I boot I notice the boot message has a line saying "Starting Firestarter firewall .... failed"When I am logged in and type "/etc/init.d/firestarter status" as the Firestarter FAQs say, I get"Firestarter is running... ... (warning)"I can run the gui manually and still same message.

Debian Configuration :: Firewall Up But Ports Still Open

Sep 9, 2011

I have just switched over from firestart to gufw.I have set all incoming traffic to deny and all outgoing traffic to allow.I have rules set for incoming traffic, and have only opened 1 port on my system for torrents. My router also only has the same port opened which again is for torrents.I use "Network Tools" which is included on squeeze and do a portscan of 192.168.1.100 and 127.0.0.1 I get all kinds of crazy ports coming back as opened. What is even stranger is if I do a few scans, these ports change, so one port on one scan may come up as open, then it will disappear and a different port may show as open.

Mind you none but the torrent port is forwarded in my router, I have no idea what any of these other ports are, or why they are even showing up.What the heck is going on? I dont think this is normal? Am I at any higher risk for attack?

Debian Configuration :: Shorewall (Shoreline?) Firewall Up And Running, But It's Logging To /var/log/messages?

Jan 29, 2011

I've got a Shorewall (Shoreline?) firewall up and running, but it's logging to /var/log/messages. I'd much rather have it logging to another location e.g. /var/log/firewall but can't find (a clear enough) explanation on how to do this. Apparently, it varies greatly depending on the distro, the kernel, and the version of Shorewall that is running. You'd think it would be something as simple as setting a path in a config file, but apparently not. I'm running a stock Lenny kernel on the firewall machine. It comes with version 4.0.15 of Shorewall.

Debian Configuration :: ProFTPd -- Cannot Download From FTP - Can Upload Though

Sep 7, 2011

I rent a dedicated virtual server (ve) from Media Temple. It is one of those servers where they give you the base OS install and then you have to install all of your own applications.

Anyways, setting up the FTP software for the server has been hell. I am using ProFTPd and Webmin 1.510. I am able to log into the FTP and upload files to any of the directories that I have created.

The issue here is that I cannot download anything from my server via FTP. I have tried multiple clients (Filezilla is what I use normally), but they all come back with "Transfer cannot be started".

Debian Configuration :: Cannot Upload Pics To Facebook But Can Download Normally

Apr 30, 2011

I am using debian squeeze, with browsers chrome, firefox, and flashplugins installed.

I get online via ipv4 DSL, pppoe(I don't quite sure their relationships), I can browse websites, watch flash smoothly, can download softwares from websites to my desktop PC via the browser chrome or firefox with speed about 200kB/s, if I download an some 700MB ubuntu iso from ftp6.sjtu.edu.cn, it reaches 10MB/s.

The thing is, I can't upload files from my PC to online disks(say [url], [url] via browser (firefox, chrome etc), can't send email with an attach file even as small as 1MB via broser, can't post topics on this forum with attachment, can't upload pics to Facebook.

When I try do these "upload things", the web browser just stays there and doesn't refresh. Some online disks have a instant upload speed of 10kb/s ,then it quickly slow down to less than 200b/s, finally it stoped there ,and say "upload failed, network failure".

Here is my configuration files or test results.

When I enable UFW Configuration, in a programme called Firewall Configuration, runs along with the System. Now, I configured it such that it can run along with the Session. Now, Ubuntu is already secure. So, is there any need for additional Firewall like this? (ufw is already present in Ubuntu, and this only Configures it). And, is it required to have it enabled always for keeping the Firefox running? (Because It may consume System Resources). Or, is there any other firewall that consumes less System resources or runs at the Background?

Debian Configuration :: Find & Download I386 Packages On An Amd64 System?

Oct 30, 2010

I have a computer with internet access with amd64 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny). I have another computer with NO internet access with i386 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny).I want to download some packages for the i386 computer using the amd64 computer. So far, the only way I can see to do this is to use dpkg-architecture to temporarily change to i386 on the internet computer, run aptitude with the download-only option to retrieve the packages I need with all suitable dependencies, then switch the internet computer back over to amd64.

I can't imagine I'm the only person who ever needed to do this, and yet I've had no luck finding any advice. The method I described seems rather awkward - is there a more elegant solution?

I apologize to the membership, I realize now the absurdity of this subject. Having now studied the online repository search functions closer, I see it appears packages are automatically retrieved with all necessary dependencies. As such, it is not necessary to use apt and its various functions to do the job.

Debian Configuration :: Install A Multi-core System And Configure It To Run Several VMs, One Each For A Firewall, A Caching Proxy Server, A Mail Server, A Web Server?

Jan 25, 2011

I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible. My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet. The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.

In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).

Ubuntu Installation :: Proxy Configuration - Running Apt-get Update Due To A Firewall At Work

Jun 24, 2010

I think I have encountered a problem in the way that lucid handles proxy servers. I was having problems running apt-get update due to a firewall at my work. I also noted that I was getting 403 Forbidden for wget. So I went to System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy from my account (which has administrator privileges) and input the http address for the proxy server, and then clicked the button to "Apply Systemwide...".

Following that change, wget worked from my account, but whenever I tried to sudo apt-get update, I got the 403 forbidden response again, even though I could wget the same files that apt-get reported as forbidden. I figured that this was a problem with the root account, and so I typed

Code:

However, upon exiting from the root account, and trying to run sudo apt-get update again, I got the 403 forbidden code again!

So, it seems that the proxy settings are not being applied systemwide.

Debian :: Incremental Encyrpted Local Backup Utility?

I want to backup data and upload to online hosting services.Since I'm uploading stuff online, I only want to upload encrypted data (so that even the hostiing service admins cannot look at the data). Thus, I first want to encyrpt my data locally that I want to backup. Since I will be making changes locally to the data, I want some sort of incremental imaging system where the incremental changes are stored in seperate files so that I only have to upload the incremental encrypted changes.

Duplicity is an option, but it uses GPG, which makes it a bit complicated; and I was wondering if there was any alternative which was simpler as I am only doing the encryption and backup locally.
