I have one of my user's home directory on a seperate partition, and I was wondering if there was a way to only mount it when/if the user is logged in and unmount it if they log out.

I've just made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. When I right-click a panel and choose "New Panel", the panel is made, but is not visible. The panel is placed on the left side of the screen, and icons on the desktop is moved to the right. Also windows does not use the full width of the screen when maximized. I've tried to remove the panel configuration in my home directory, logout and login, installing ATI drivers and running a gnome-panel command (from another post on ubuntu forums), but nothing works.

I don't have encrypted home directories currently, but I was wondering if there is an easy way to encrypt my home directory so that it is automatically decrypted when I'm logging in (console/kdm). Basically I would like to manually do same thing as Debian installer would have done.

I recently reinstalled Lenny and I am attempting to save my /home directory. I used the graphical install and when it came to the part about partitioning, I created a new /home partition "hdb1" and told the installer to ignore my old /home partition "/dev/hda9".Following the completion of the install, I logged in and changed my /etc/fstab so that /home --> my old /home partition "/dev/hda9". I then mounted the old partition to /home and rebooted the system. Now, when I go to my /home directory >> properties, I can see that the files I had are on the drive (2GB are used) --- but --- I cannot actually see the files??

We've tweaked sshd_config so that they default to their home directory but they are able to navigate up/across/down to everything. This is a "straight-out-of-the-box" debian 5.0.5 Netinst. Just a basic system with Apache/MySql/PHP/SSH and no desktop.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been working on building an LTSP server for diskless booting. I have a tftp server that's booting the system. I followed the steps on [URL] .... to build the LTSP server.
I had to make one change from the guide. I have a cisco router that's acting as the DHCP, I'm not very familiar with Cisco IOS so instead of playing with that, I decided to modify the default file on the PXE.
I commented the kernel append line and added the following instead
/srv/tftp/ltsp/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/default

I'm mounting the nfs as a rw file system for now. I'm planning to make it read only once I have it working the way I want. In addition to this, I also chroot into the LTSP root and installed lightdm + mate. As I understood what I read, this would boot the environment on the diskless system. All of this seem to work correctly.
What I need to do next is to find a way to setup the LTSP clients to log in by authenticating on the active directory. I understand that the login account used by the LTSP client has to exist on the LTSP server.
I have successfully added the LTSP server as a worksation within the windows domain and I can log into domain accounts from the LTSP server but domain credentials do not work when using an LTSP client, I can only log in if I use an account that exists on the LTSP server. I wanted to know if there is a way to accomplish AD authentication.
Do I have to build an LDAP server on the LTSP server, sync accounts with the Active Directory to be able to log in with AD credentials?

I have attached a 2 TB LUN to the HP Blade Server running CentOS 5.3 via a Qlogic HBA. To provide the cluster users with sufficient storage areaa, I want to move only the home directory from the default partitioning schema to the attached storage and leave the remaining partitions on the main harddrive of the server. So, having copied user directories & files to the new location, i.e.,
/cluster/home2 on the new storage partition, what modification(s) should I make on the server?
/export/home is the default location for the users.
/cluster/home2 is NFS shared directory serving as the new home location for the users.
i am getting weird results after mounting the /home directory from the server. seems like the client sees the ldapuser and it's directory from the server side.. /home/ldapuser. but it's pulling the "blank" user as it's permission. blank is the actual user on the client side. any ideas why?

I've just reinstalled my box with an encrypted home (used the encrypt home option when installing). I have a query in this regard - suppose I lose the box. Won't it be possible for someone to drop into root, reset my passwd and then access my /home. Is there anyway of having a different passwd for accessing /home? My ~ is on a different partition from /.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can not use nfs from F10 client to F12 server. nfs mount on F10 to F12 times out anf nfs4 mount gives "mount.nfs4: mounting localhost:/home failed, reason given by server: No such file or directory" I have tried to close firewall and set selinux to permissive mode on both client and server with same result. Samba works fine. On server [root@flokipal ~]# mount -t nfs4 localhost:/home /media/tonlist mount.nfs4: mounting localhost:/home failed, reason given by server: No such file or directory

I've made a LAMP install and used it as a test server connected to my Mac. Good. I managed to get Dreamweaver to work with the server and had access to the home folder from my Mac. The bad part is when I was setting up the permissions for my Mac to connect, I gave it too many rights and set /etc/exports with "no_root_squash" option. This allowed me to change permissions in my home folder from the Mac! That was really cool. The trouble started when I tried to get too clever about managing my F11 test server.
The permission change on the F11 box from the Mac created a new user 501. All the home files had this new user, 501, and a new group 501. I manually edited the /etc/passwd file giving this new PID a meaningful name, rXtian, and set its group to Xtian from the original user. Just to make myself feel really clever, I read in my "F11 Bible" that a "portable desktop" would make it easier to manage log in from different machines. I created a new home directory and CP'n the content from:
/home/Xtian
to
/home/xtiansimonsibm/Xtian (with -rw-r--r-- rXtian Xtian)
What I mean to say is I deleted the old /home/Xtian directory for reasons I do not know. Thats when all the trouble started. I can't login to either user, rXtian or Xtian. I can only get on as root. I tried to start over by creating a third user with ADDUSER including the base set of user files. I renamed home/xtiansimonsibm/rXtian. I can't log in to either. I used PASSWD command changing Xtian and rXtian's loginpass, but neither password has taken. I still have the test server working, but I can't login to the home folder anymore. What can I do? Any tutorial or checklist for repairinig the user permissions, passwords?
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Ran some updates,finally got around to rebooting. When I rebooted, It came up with Some errors about missing files. Came to discover my home directory was not decrypted. user's $HOME/.drmc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. user's $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writable by other users. next i click OK, then... your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. if you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem. when i click ok, the login screen reappear again... how to use failsafe sessions.
This may be a rookie mistake, but I created a user (new user) in Linux on a Ubuntu system and didn't actually create the home directory for this user. Now, when I log in, it says there are problems... If I delete the path home/<new user> and try to log in the system tells me I can use root as home directory but I will likely experience problems, and then it won't let me log in. What is the best way to create this directory with the appropriate permissions? Should I just create another user and delete this one?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?
I've installed debian squeezy recently and for some reason I have problems with mounting /home partition during startup.
There's an error:Mounting local filesystems...mount: special device /dev/mapper/isw_bbfedcffgi_Volume0p6 does not exist. failed
I've tried using fsck - no result the file system is healthy, I've tried formatting it once again (fresh copy, no user data) and it's not working. What is more mounting the partition manually goes well - I can read the data and write to it. All other partitions are ok.
I have no idea what's going on and why mounting /home fails. I've written this post on Polish debian users forum, but no response - only to give more info, so I'll put it here also:

I am having problem accessing and detecting a HFS+ USB HD Drive. I already installed HFSPLUS apps and its corresponding utils and said HFS and HFSPLUS module is loaded in my kernel.In short, my 1386 Debian squeeze cannot detect the said Drive and such I cannot mount it.

The system is freezing and the only way to get it out of freeze is to kill tty7, I log into tty2 as root(which can startx) and kill tty7 via pid...
At first I thought it might be that I have 10 virtual NICs on 1 physical NIC, but after removing them it still freezes after a few minutes of running. Now I am wondering if double mounting/bind causes issues,
Example: drive2 is mounted to profile2/MyStuff, but I also "mount -o bind" a folder inside profile2/ MyStuff/.opera to profile2/.opera..

Does double mounting cause freezing ?Because I have not double mounted, and it hasn't froze yet. and to be honest, I am double mounting/binding several config folders like .mozilla etc...Drives are SSDs, and I created a complete other drive with LinuxMint and it froze the same way after mounts.
I have two remote systems which I have fstab entries for on the local system. I have them set to noauto, because mount fails during boot for some reason, but that's not the problem. For years I've mounted them in rc.local.
The problem is after I recently reinstalled Debian, when I mount them manually it always asks for my user's password. I've copied my user's pub key from the local to the remote system and put it in the user authorized_keys file (not root), like I always have. But it still asks for a password, and so fails to mount in rc.local.
After having problems with lxde crashing while running Jessie, and re-installing Wheezy, I am not able to mount my WinXP drive. In the past I was able to run pcmanfm and mount the drive from there. It would ask for my root password and then would mount the drive. Now, however, when I click on the drive icon it gives me an error message saying authentication required.
One thing is that when I installed Wheezy I had the WinXP drive disconnected so as to not inadvertently install Wheezy on the wrong drive (I have two identical drives). After installing I connected the WinXP drive and then did a grub update. I can boot either drive, as expected, but I can not mount the WinXP drive from pcmanfm. Do I need to change the Policykit?
I upgraded my testing/Wheezy Inspiron N5010 to 2.6.38-2-amd64 recently (along with a bunch of other updates, of course) and now my Samba network share is no longer automatically mounting, I have to open a root terminal and do a "mount /mountpoint"; my relevant /etc/fstab entry:
I've tried over options, as well, but it isn't automatically mounting. Any suggestions (including where to file a bug report)?

In these installations, I am able to access her home directory, while, in the past, I was not allowed to access her home directory on previous Debian releases.
