I have a strange problem. I have set up a server to run without a keyboard, mouse, or video. If I boot it connected to a monitor, there is no issue. However, if I boot it without a monitor attached, the CPU just runs at 100%. Below is a shot of my HTOP from the machine: The weird part is that if you sort the processes by CPU%, they don't actually total 100%. I was trying to see what was pushing the CPU so high, but most of the time the running processes only total between 5 and 20%. Has anyone else seen the problem? Any idea what's happening? I'm worried that if I leave it running like that, the processor could burn up. My temporary work around is to boot it up with a monitor, then disconnect the monitor, but that's really inconvenient.

However when I remove the monitor and keyboard it doesn't boot (I don't know how far it gets, there is no monitor...). I did not install, and do not want, any kind of GUI interface, command line only. This is going in a closet as a solid state rsync backup repo. I have another small system (not this exact one) running Lenny that runs just fine headless - is this some kind of Squeeze regression? Is there any way I can get this running headless (I can't run Lenny on this box because I don't think the Marvell GbE driver is there or is working in Lenny.

I was running 2.6.26 and I've recently upgraded to 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 along with other packages (mostly dependencies)... which possibly involved the network stack.
After this upgrade my home gateway stopped working and I'm clueless to where the problem may be.
I can see that the iptables are still there when I type:
iptables -t filter -L -v -n -x --line-numbers
iptables -t nat -L -v -n -x --line-numbers
I installed Firestarter firewall on debian Squeeze.Now i note there is a gui available in System->Administration which apparently does not need to be running all the time - its not set up to start on boot.When I boot I notice the boot message has a line saying "Starting Firestarter firewall .... failed"When I am logged in and type "/etc/init.d/firestarter status" as the Firestarter FAQs say, I get"Firestarter is running... ... (warning)"I can run the gui manually and still same message.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just switched over from firestart to gufw.I have set all incoming traffic to deny and all outgoing traffic to allow.I have rules set for incoming traffic, and have only opened 1 port on my system for torrents. My router also only has the same port opened which again is for torrents.I use "Network Tools" which is included on squeeze and do a portscan of 192.168.1.100 and 127.0.0.1 I get all kinds of crazy ports coming back as opened. What is even stranger is if I do a few scans, these ports change, so one port on one scan may come up as open, then it will disappear and a different port may show as open.
Mind you none but the torrent port is forwarded in my router, I have no idea what any of these other ports are, or why they are even showing up.What the heck is going on? I dont think this is normal? Am I at any higher risk for attack?
Our firewall (debian) currently has 4 public ip addresses (eth0 1.2.3.4, eth0:0 1.2.3.5, eth0:1 1.2.3.8, eth0:2 1.2.3.9) and 3 internal subnets (eth1 10.1.x.x, eth1:0 10.2.x.x, eth2 10.7.x.x). We are experiencing the following two problems which I believe have the same root cause. 1) The firewall cannot access beyond the isp gateway (1.2.3.1). 2) From externally, we can ping eth0 with no trouble, however, pinging the eth0:0, eth0:1 and eth0:2 interfaces have results similar to the following:

I get the feeling that I'm missing something obvious, especially since all traffic on the internal subnets can access externally as normal.
I got 2 servers, each on different locations (server 1 and server 2). I want all traffic on server1 included web browsing, applications etc., be always going through server2, like a gateway. I want the traffic to be encrypted (maybe use VPN?) So if I browse, or any logs pick up ip adresses from applications used by server1, I want it to display the IP address from server2 (Might be the wrong way to say it).
I always wants server2 to act as an firewall and logserver that logs all the traffic. I was thinking about using Snort for IPS/IDS solutions and OpenVPN for the traffic, but what can I use as a firewall? Most firewalls I find on google has its own OS/Distribution. Maybe Squid for logs? But squid does not support much protocols. Distribution on both servers are updated Debian/Ubuntu based.
I wonder do we need firewall for home pcs at all?I mean, fine, for servers and stuff, but I have my own laptop station. People have different position on this issue.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a Shorewall (Shoreline?) firewall up and running, but it's logging to /var/log/messages. I'd much rather have it logging to another location e.g. /var/log/firewall but can't find (a clear enough) explanation on how to do this. Apparently, it varies greatly depending on the distro, the kernel, and the version of Shorewall that is running. You'd think it would be something as simple as setting a path in a config file, but apparently not. I'm running a stock Lenny kernel on the firewall machine. It comes with version 4.0.15 of Shorewall.

I've set up a Lan-to-Lan (routed) OpenVPN tunnel. For redundancy I want to set up a second VPN tunnel on a fallback gateway/firewall on the client side. Currently, both sides (server/client) know how to route packets across each others physical LAN. So no NAT is used. When the primary gateway (fw1) is connected to the VPN server all traffic runs via the fw1 tunnel. Than when the secondary gateway (fw2) connects to the VPN server and fw1 is still connected all traffic for fw1 will be delivered to fw2 and effectively destroying traffic intended for fw1. This is of course no problem if I first shutdown (fence) fw1, than set up fw2 to use the gateway IP address from fw1 and set up the VPN tunnel to the VPN server. Effectively replacing fw1 with fw2 on the client side.
However, I can't seem to find a decent howto.
I am also exploring the possibility to let both tunnels active and let OpenVPN (or another tool) decide how to route packets back and forth the different LANs. A virtual IP between two gateway's both running a VPN or something similar. This would be the preferred method of course. However, I don't know how to tackle this one but I'm pretty sure there are people out there who are happy to share their 2 cents.
I have 17 system (sys1,sys2,sys3.....sys17) in my office, and i am willing to setup a dedicated system to act as a firewall for that i have selected sys1 with two NIC(eth0 for local network and eth1 for internet) and i have configured to access internet in my office for that i have opened a wellknown port 80.but my clients are not accessing the internet..

When I enable UFW Configuration, in a programme called Firewall Configuration, runs along with the System. Now, I configured it such that it can run along with the Session. Now, Ubuntu is already secure. So, is there any need for additional Firewall like this? (ufw is already present in Ubuntu, and this only Configures it). And, is it required to have it enabled always for keeping the Firefox running? (Because It may consume System Resources). Or, is there any other firewall that consumes less System resources or runs at the Background?

I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible.My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet.The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).
I'm currently using the default Gnome desktop environment on my server when I connect via VNC, but I've been trying to Openbox on Crunchbang lately and I rather prefer it for being so light. I'm a relative noob and don't want to cock anything up - what's the simplest way to switch to the Openbox environment for when I connect via VNC, and once that's working, whats the safest way to remove Gnome?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a couple of Gateway SX-2841 boxes, Intel EM64T CPUs, lots of memory, big HDs. One has Ubuntu 10.10 Gnome and one has Debian 6.0.1a. So far, so good. I'm still working on USB hookup to a Motorola modem, but the LAN works fine. The machines did have problems running Firefox with the "pre-installed" Win7 Home edition OS. But then, I never intended to keep the MS system, anyway.

I have the DVD, and whenever I try to boot from the DVD it locks up the PC after selecting the default language stuff. I've run the media check on the DVD, and it passes with no problems. I am behind a firewall and for some reason the configuration is not allowing YUM to get through the firewall, but Firefox can get through (I have another post for this issue).
