Debian Configuration :: Squeeze On Thinkpad R400 Laptop Getting Very Hot?

Apr 6, 2011

I have Lenovo Thinkpad R400 laptop. It has Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor with ATI Radeon 3400 series graphics card and Intel Mobility chipset series 4 Integrated graphics controller. I have Squeeze ( stable) installed on it with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 .

My laptop gets very hot within 10 minutes whether I do any task or not. Also battery life is almost 40% as compared to Windows. I am more worried about temperature as it remains completely cool in windows. Mostly CPU load remains around 10% and CPU spends 99.99% time at 800MHz clock. I believe heat generated is by graphics card chipset.

Following are some information about my machine

$ lspci

00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset PCI Express Graphics Port (rev 07)

Debian Configuration :: Thinkpad X120e - Wireless Network Down

May 14, 2011

My wireless network is down. I got thinkpad x120e, chipset: Realtek RTL8188CE, driver: rtl819ce.

Here is what I did so far:
upgraded to 2.6.38-bpo.2-686
installed firmware-linux-nonfree
Added the firmware file from the repo since it's not yet packaged in firmware-realtek and reloaded the module.
'iwlist sc' shows: 'wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down'
'dmesg |tail -20' shows:
rtl8192ce:rtl92c_download_fw():<0-0> Failed to request firmware!
firmware 0000:04:00.0: firmware_loading_store: vmap() failed

I also tried the following commands:
ifdown wlan0 ; ifup wlan0
ifconfig wlan0 up

Relevant bug: [URL]
Step by step, in case someone is interested:
add to sources.list: deb [URl] squeeze-backports main
aptitude update
sudo aptitude -t squeeze-backports install linux-image-2.6.38-bpo.2-686
install this package: [URL]
get the first file: [URL]
add to driver:
mkdir -p /lib/firmware/rtlwifi
mv rtlwifi_rtl8192cfw.bin /lib/firmware/rtlwifi

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze X64 ThinkPad 61p Suspend Key Doesn't Work

Sep 28, 2010

I have Debian Squeeze x64 on ThinkPad T61p with standard 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel. thinkpad_acpi loaded as module, suspend to RAM works fine from menu in KDE as well as by closing the lid, however machine doesn't appear to react on pressing Fn+F4 which should put it to sleep as well. I've read through thinkpad_acpi documentation and asked Google but so far can't find the solution. Can anyone, point me in correct direction?

Debian Configuration :: Thinkpad W510 - Squeeze 64-bit And NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M

Feb 14, 2010

I am running Debian Squeeze ( kernel 2.6.32-trunk) 64-bit on this machine - "most" of the hardware can talk to Linux or vice-versa. I am, however, having trouble finding a suitable free / non-free driver to work with the abovementioned card. It would seem that this card is too "new" at the moment (February 2010).

Hardware :: Mouse Won't Stop Clicking?

Aug 24, 2010

I had a problem a while back with hard freezes on my laptop, turned out the thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink was a small circle less than 1 cm across. A new coat of thermal paste fixed that, but talking with a local Linux geek, he said that it looks like the UHCI Host Controller has taken permanent damage, which might explain at least some of this problem.

I have a USB optical mouse. The last time I used it was on Fedora 10, shortly after Fedora 11 came out. Now I'm using Fedora 13, and all my other USB devices work fine (Cruzer Micro, Targus Numpad, Seagate external). The problem with the mouse is that after a little bit of use (usually 5-10 minutes) it starts rapidly clicking. On the desktop or in any program with highlighting (gedit, OpenOffice, etc) it does a perpetual click and drag. In GIMP it seems to just rapidly click (moving it fast enough will leave white space between colors). The only way to fix it is to pull the cable out, and then it usually doesn't work until after I reboot. I don't have any other USB mice around to test with, and money is a bit too tight right now to buy one, or else I would try that. The touchpad works flawlessly, but it doesn't have the fine control I need for most of the things I do.

Ubuntu :: Clicking Noise When Playing Audio / Stop It?

Mar 12, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 x64 on an HP Pavillion, p6110y PC. Whenever I playback audio, and have not played audio for several seconds, I hear a clicking noise before the audio starts to play. I did not have this problem with Ubuntu 9.04 x64 on the same computer, and I think that PulseAudio is to blame, as usual. Does anyone have any advice as to how to stop this clicking noise? I found something that might be relevant to this issue: http://www.flibblesan.co.uk/2009/10/...-playback-bug/.

Debian Configuration :: Radeon DRI Driver, Clicking "Apply" It Fails?

Mar 3, 2011

i couldn't get out after many hours of reading documents/posts/forums etc.

The issue:In Kde 4.4.5, using xorg and radeon opensource driver, i can't set OpenGL for desktop effects. Clicking "Apply" it fails. OpenGL seems corrupted someway. I have to stay on XRender. This is the glxinfo output:

glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.7.1
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

The story:i was running previously kde with nvidia propertary driver and a nvidia board. Then i removed the board for a fault and put a sapphire radeon HD5450. Initially i set up propertary radeon fglrx. At the end, i decided to use the opensource drivers, removed in the best way all fglrx files and links. So i then followed the wiki for reinstall open source radeon drivers, did it many times, also reinstalling xorg with purge, same for libgl1-mesa-xxx etc, but i still cannot use the OpenGL hardware support (should be DRI, that is correctly installed but not loaded).

Seems to be really an opengl corruption, if i disable the check on apply, and select OpenGL rendering, i get a complete blank screen.

also, I am noticing that the picture on mp4 files is jittery and the video and audio slowly become more and more out of sync

This is happening on my Media Center running Boxee. When I run the same avi file from my PC it is perfect. MP$ files are still out of sync

Debian Configuration :: Hard Disk Won't Stop Spinning Up / Down

Feb 11, 2015

I've bought a new notebook. The hard drive won't stop spinning down and then spinning up again during load. I don't want HD power saving, so I disabled it within

1. /etc/hdparm.conf
Code: Select all# -B apm setting
apm = 255
# -B apm setting when on battery
apm_battery = 255

It didn't work. I can still hear the HD spin up. It's annoying in a video game because things just suddenly stop for a second.

2. /etc/udev/rules.d/50-hdparm.rules

Code: Select allACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="sda", RUN+="/usr/bin/hdparm -B 255 -S 0 /dev/sda"

This was also every tip I could find during RTFM.

Other specs:

Acer Aspire E5-521G-88A8 Notebook
AMD A8-6410 APU
4 GB RAM
AMD Radeon R5 2 GB VRAM

Debian Configuration :: Jessie Service Script Not Calling Status And Stop Routines

Apr 1, 2016

I am the author of an internet radio for the Raspberry PI originally running on Debian Wheezy. The radio (radiod) service is started and stopped using the usual service commands:

service radiod start|stop|status

Since upgrading to Debian Jessie the service status and stop routines in my radio daemon are no longer called.

For example:

# service radiod status
â—Ź radiod.service - LSB: Raspberry PI Radio Daemon
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/radiod)
Active: active (running) since Thu 2016-03-31 20:17:07 CEST; 15h ago
Process: 380 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/radiod start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
CGroup: /system.slice/radiod.service
└─603 python /usr/share/radio/ada_radio.py start

If I call my program (which runs as a daemon) I see the status message from my program

# ./radiod.py status
radiod running pid 603

I have established that service stop never calls my program routines to shutdown the radiod daemon when the system is rebooted (I see that from my log files).

The reboot hangs for about 5 minutes whilst stopping the radiod service (because stop never calls my stop routines).

Below is my radiod script, which is fairly conventional, and which has been working all the time until I ported to Debian Jessie.

/etc/init.d/radiod
#!/bin/sh
#
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: radiod
# Should-Start:
# Should-Stop:

Debian Multimedia :: DE For Older Thinkpad T41?

Jul 21, 2010

I was wondering if anyone uses older laptops (for e.g., Centrino M) like Thinkpads from the T40-series.I am finding LXDE to be extremely buggy. There's been more than one occasion in which I've been totally surprised at weird 'events.' It's been so often that it annoys me now and I wish to switch DEs now.

I guess my choices are Gnome, KDE and xfce. I think KDE 4 will be too bloated so I guess that leaves Gnome and xfce. I also read that LXDE is actually a 'beta' (release?) even though LXDE versions are in 'release' form. I come across too many 'bugs' so I think the other desktops, even if it takes up a bit more resources, is a compromise I have to take.

Is xfce the best choice for an older laptop like mine? I thought LXDE sounded great and had great potential but the amount of bugs I find and the fact it looks like there's not much of a team developing and working on it, is disconcerting. Hopefully, things will improve but I don't want to work out or encounter 'bugs' on my laptop so often.

General :: Debian 507 Won't Load On Thinkpad T20?

Dec 28, 2010

I have an old laptop I bought for $20 & thought I'd install Linux & XP in a dual-boot. It couldn't handle the MINT installer, so I thought I'd go with Debian. XP was already on there, so I ran the Debian install CD (LXDE), set up the 2nd partition, and finished installation. It rebooted once, but since then will not load Debian.

I get the GRUB menu, pick the default (not single user), it runs through all the lines of text down to the block that says "starting gnome display manager gdm" & maybe 4 lines after that (which I can't read in time)... then the screen goes blank, there's a brief flicker, the CPU thinks a bunch, and then there's usually a low-pitched BOOP at which point the CPU stops thinking & the screen just stays blank. The power is still on, but nothing happens.

Anyway, I don't know if it has an ATI card or whatever (saw something online alluding to that being a problem.) I also don't know how to use the single user mode, or how to display error messages, or do anything useful in the command line. Haha... But I'm a novice programmer & "computer literate" outside of Linux, so I can learn.

The laptop has 128MB of memory (which functions perfectly according to MemTest 86), I think a 450MHz PIII processor, 20GB HD (split between XP and Linux), a dead battery, a slightly damaged Power Supply, damaged screen...
