I've been snooping around a bit about this issue of how to automount USB Drives, have them show on the desktop in file managers like PCManFM and not have to touch fstab at all.
How do I do this? Without touching Fstab, GNOME, any other DE. I only want openbox around.Another question I also hope to answer: How do I make shortcuts in PCManFM?

Jun 1, 2009I have F9 on a laptop that dual boots with WinXP.When i log in and the desktop shows that the NTFS partition is mounted with a shortcut on the desktop. Is there a way to make it not automount? Trivial inconvenience, but i thought i'd ask anyway.

Jul 5, 2011I upgraded to F15 and now my Plextor DVD PX-712A drive will not mount.My CD-ROM will mount fine.My optical drives kept auto closing right after opening, but I did find a solution in this fourm to that problem which was editing the sysctl.conf file.But like I mentioned I cannot get any DVD rom to mount properly. I have used disk manager and I can see the DVD drive listed.I have told disk manager to mount the DVD but I still cannot find it in Dolphin.Also, a strange problem is that in Disk Manager trying to speed test any of my optical drives fails, it says that the transfer rate is too slow to measure.

Oct 5, 2009I've installed Fedora 10 short time after it came out. Now I am having some problems unmounting thes drives on restart or shutdown. It hangs at the stage of 'unmounting file system'. I've looked into this matter and discovered that those drives are automatically mounted and shown on the Gnome file browser. As the /etc/fstab indicates, it is not mounted by it. I must have done something to have all the hard drives shown in the file browser and now Fedora seems to be unable to unmount them.

Ubuntu :: Automounting A Specific Partition On Secondary Drive
May 29, 2010I'm using rsync and crontab to do automatic backups from my /home partition on /dev/sda to my backup drive /dev/sdb3. The backup partition is ext4.
But the backup partition (sdb3) is obviously on a secondary drive, and I want to automount it when I log in. I read that you have to edit /etc/fstab to do this, but I'm not familiar with the process and can't find clear enough instructions, so I was wondering if someone could give me the command I need and maybe explain how it works?

May 25, 2010I have Debian Squeeze AMD64 bit release. It finds my wired ethernet connection and ues itfine, although nothing shows up in the top right corner under the networking icon.
When I plug my mobile phone in (HTC S620) it always uses this as the main internet connection and then even if disconnected wont use my wired connection until I reboot.
Is there a way to stop it doing this or at least have my wired connction as an option so I can just click to reconnect to my ethernet connection?

Since upgrading to Debian Jessie the service status and stop routines in my radio daemon are no longer called.
For example:

If I call my program (which runs as a daemon) I see the status message from my program

I have established that service stop never calls my program routines to shutdown the radiod daemon when the system is rebooted (I see that from my log files).
The reboot hangs for about 5 minutes whilst stopping the radiod service (because stop never calls my stop routines).
Below is my radiod script, which is fairly conventional, and which has been working all the time until I ported to Debian Jessie.

Jan 15, 2010I've just installed lenny from dvd, and am just settling in. I'm curious about virtual machines. so I've installed xen. With xen comes qemu by default. Now the setup I've recently become familiar with is Suse-11 which is quite slick.In Suse, Yast provides a distribution prepared virtual management section for xen, including an installer. Debian's setup is similar but not a clone. I want to try out the installer. Aside from the differences, debian has a screaming deficit. On booting dom0 in Lenny, if fails to get into gnome, badly. I can tell what's probably wrong, but I need to fix it. Now I'm also a gentoo fan and very practised at posting queries, so here goes.
Debian's config for X is somewhat unhelpful. The xorg.conf just states Configured device and configured monitor for its components. If it expanded on just what the settings were it would help. What I have is a frambuffer driver not loadinf or being implemented.

Debian Configuration :: No Network Access In Gnome
Apr 5, 2011I've installed Debian on a Sun Ultra 450 Enterprise system using the net install version, so I know that my network is working correctly. However, now that Debian is installed and I bring up Gnome, I have no network access. I've set eth0 to DHCP, and have pointed it to my DNS server, but it never gets any information from the DNS server.
I've looked through /etc/network/interfaces, which looks like this:

So far, nothing works. Why would the Debian network install disk work, but not be smart enough to set my network correctly from the start once I'm actually running Linux? Also, how do I get the network running in Gnome?
