Debian Configuration :: How To Start And Stop Asterisk Service By Non Root User
Aug 25, 2011
I am using debian squeeze server with asterisk 1.6 installed and configured.my problem is non root users need to access the server using ssh and restart asterisk server after making changes in asterisk configuration files. As of now i am giving root username/password for this process (i know it is not at all a good idea) .now how can i create a username and configure it which can only access and modify asterisk configuration files and restart asterisk server without any other privileges.
How do I give permission to a logged in user to stop/start a specific service without entering a root/sudo password? So they can do a simple "service SomeService stop|start" It is for a headless Ubuntu server.
I am the author of an internet radio for the Raspberry PI originally running on Debian Wheezy. The radio (radiod) service is started and stopped using the usual service commands:
service radiod start|stop|status
Since upgrading to Debian Jessie the service status and stop routines in my radio daemon are no longer called.
For example:
# service radiod status ● radiod.service - LSB: Raspberry PI Radio Daemon Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/radiod) Active: active (running) since Thu 2016-03-31 20:17:07 CEST; 15h ago Process: 380 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/radiod start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: /system.slice/radiod.service └─603 python /usr/share/radio/ada_radio.py start
If I call my program (which runs as a daemon) I see the status message from my program
# ./radiod.py status radiod running pid 603
I have established that service stop never calls my program routines to shutdown the radiod daemon when the system is rebooted (I see that from my log files).
The reboot hangs for about 5 minutes whilst stopping the radiod service (because stop never calls my stop routines).
Below is my radiod script, which is fairly conventional, and which has been working all the time until I ported to Debian Jessie.
/etc/init.d/radiod #!/bin/sh # ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: radiod # Should-Start: # Should-Stop:
I am trying to give access to ONE single user to start and shutdown tomcat server. The problem being, when I enter syntax: username ALL= /etc/init.d/tomcat5, /usr/local/tomcat/webapps, PASSWD:ALL This gives the user access to start and stop tomcat but also gives user access to start and stop other services within /etc/init.d - such as httpd etc... What is the proper way to give user access to start and stop service, and limiting that power to only one service....
After install debian 8, I can't see system start and stop message from console ... How can I enable system message from console in debain 8?
debian 7 output ---------------------------------------------- root@demo:~# service apache2 restart [ ok ] Restarting web server: apache2 ... waiting . root@demo:~#
debian 8 output ----------------------------------------------- root@demo:~# service apache2 restart root@demo:~# <=============================== No message (start or stop)
I have installed squid 2.7 in my red hat Linux box.I need some guidance regarding to start and stop squid service. Normally when squid configuration file is n /etc/squid/squid.conf and we want to start the service we use # service squid startand to stop the service we use# service squid stopNow squid is inCode:# /usr/local/squid/etc/squid.confhere the default # service squid start and # service squid stop does not work.
I'm using debian 5 x64 with xfce.Is there a way to configure (start/stop/restart) services (especially Apache2, mySQL and PHP) using a graphical or cli tool? I tried to use sysv-rc, sysv-rc-conf, rcconf and rc-conf in the terminal but Bash didn't find them (Although Synaptic show that sysv-rc is installed).
Which command i need to use to start or stop samba service in suse10? I tried rcsmbd start , ./smbd start , /etc/rc.d/init.d/smbd start and no result. And the second question . How i need to connect to samba server from windows7 ? Are there any samba client programs or i must connect from cmd ?
I need a services viewer/start/stopper for slack 13.Htop is OK but want a easier-to-use GUI like in Gnome, etc. However, I am using JWM and so need an app that is not too heavily connected to a desktop like KDE/Gnome.
I have a "time-server". It's sending time to different devices through different ports/protocols. The problem is that it has no operator and that makes some extra difficulties.
Now when i try to start it using terminal Code: Select allsudo ./myprogram works fine and
Code: Select all./myprogram doesn't work.
It is so because without sudo i have no access to ports. As a result If i add my program to System->Preferences->Startup Applications it has the same problem. So i need to start it as root, auto-start, right after auto-login to system but without entering password cause nobody will do it.
Also I need to start ntpd but it also asks password sometimes I've tried googles but it offer a few ways with entering password that isn't suitable for me or writing some scripts/changing system files but with no example I'm afraid to break it all. So is there a way to start Myprogram and NTPD as root with no password entering?
My system is Debian 6.0.10 Squeeze, Kernel 2.6.32-5-686
on my netbook I've tried to make possible for my user to shutdown without needing a password. battery could run low when I'm not in front of it. Editing sudoers has allowed my user to shutdown the system, but Gnome still prompts me for the root password whenever root is logged in too. That's usually the case, because to avoid entering the root password multiple times whenever I need elevated privileges and not wanting to cache the root password, I keep a Root Terminal always open.
I'm using Debian Jessie Cinnamon right now. I've got 1 user account on my machine--fred--as well as root, of course. "fred" is an administrator, and many times that is enough for root priviledges, for example, I can install packages via apt or dpkg. However, I cannot access "Users and Groups", or install packages via GDebi, with my password. For that, I have to have the root password.
I know that it is possible to let the admin account handle everything and not even need root--for example, Mint and (I believe) Ubuntu do it this way. I don't know how, though.
Code: Select allgroups fred fred : fred cdrom floppy sudo audio dip video plugdev netdev lpadmin scanner bluetooth
I did disable the root account by Code: Select allsudo passwd -l root to see if it would make any change. Nothing different happened except that I now can't use GDebi or access "Users and Groups" since the root account and therefore password is inactivated. Not a big deal to get it back, though.
I have lost my password for my root and for my user account.
Code: Select alluser@debian:~$ su Password: su: Authentication failure user@debian:~$ su Password: su: Authentication failure user@debian:~$ su
I have just installed a gust debian 8 on debian 8 host in virtualbox, and when i wonted too login as su/root on the host there where no login possible, is there a way to regain the root password for the host?
I have a very strange problem.ometimes, yes sometimes not all the time, I get a Destination Host Unreachable when I ping a computer on my network. If I switch to root using su I can ping that same computer. Here is a screen shot:
joseph@laptop:~$ ping 192.168.1.14 PING 192.168.1.14 (192.168.1.14) 56(84) bytes of data. From 192.168.1.9 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
I upgraded a Guruplug Display machine running Lenny to Squeeze. It's running Linux on a MicroSD device, running an ARM-cpu.
# uname -a Linux gplugD 2.6.29 #1 Wed Feb 16 17:59:04 IST 2011 armv5tejl GNU/Linux yeri@gplugD ~ $ cat /etc/debian_version 6.0.1
However, after rebooting, every non root user was unable to access anything related to the net. This means, DHCP failed to auto start, ntp is giving errors, etc
# ntpq -p localhost: timed out, nothing received ***Request timed out
daemon.log:

As root:

For my project, it's absolutely necessary to have a read-only root partition system. I have a writable /opt/project partition. But, I also need to start x server. startx This tries to write to some temporary files and fails as / is readonly. Is there any how-to on how to move this temporary files to the writable portions of the file system.
I would like to configure visudo to authorize user to start only one application with sudo on one peculiar host and forbid everything else so, after reading the man, I came up with :
Code:
Select alluser ALL = (ALL:ALL) !ALL user host_name = /usr/bin/application
How can I start the vncserver serivce before any uesr log in? because I only have one screen now what I already did is when I log in the vncserver service going to be startup, but I want it can start before I log in. I try the "chkconfig --level 345 vncserver on" but after I reboot, I still cannot access the system before I have a log in action.
I am trying to setup LDAP server on Ubuntu 10.04 and am sticking to the old /etc/ldap/slapd.conf file configuration.
I had to comment ldapi:/// from /etc/default/slapd since it was giving 'Address already in use error'. Also had to juggle with pid directory and file issues
After that I was able to start the slapd daemon (service slapd start) but now I am running into multiple issues:
1. Can't stop the service with service slapd stop
Code: ## Service stop returns 0, maybe because start-stop-daemon is not giving error #service slapd stop Stopping OpenLDAP: slapd. # echo $? 0
Will switching to BDB database resolve this ?Also can't I slapcat at non-root user ??
Does anyone know a secure method for starting a service after a user logs in to the desktop environment? There are a couple of issues that I'm trying to work around / troubleshoot and this would assist with doing that.
I'm running Fedora 11, not sure if that matters for this question.
I have found so many ways for root user to execute commands in so many possible path locations - but having difficulties on executing commands as normal user - during start up.This is what i've got for /etc/rc.d/rc.local script:Code:su -l user && (/bin/sh svc_cmd.sh &)But the command doesn't run at all...
