Debian :: Strange Backtrace On Ibm Thinkpad 600

May 10, 2009

I am reciving a strange backtrace furing the boot process of an IBM thinkpad 600 with debian lenny. The errors appear to be in the 'cs' module, but I'm not sure. Also the "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated..." script in which the backtrace occours also hangs and hasto be Control-C'd, or you have to wait for it to time out. Attached is my syslog

Programming :: Using Backtrace() Function In C?

Jul 23, 2010

I want to use backtrace() function to debug a crash issue. I tried this sample code to see how backtrace works. backtrace() function always returns 0 with the below code. Is there any kernel configuration that needs to be set for proper working of backtrace?

#include <execinfo.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
/* Obtain a backtrace and print it to stdout. */
void

Programming :: GDB Internal - Error Using Backtrace?

Jun 16, 2010

I have submitted the following to Bugzilla as well. I have a Fortran routine with a C signal handler. When a signal is caught, the signal handler calls gdb with a script argument to the system() call to output a backtrace. When I build the fortran file with the -g option, run the program, and send it a signal,I receive the error message "stack.c:295: internal-error . Without the -g option the error message does not appear but as expected I get limited output in my backtrace. Below is a description of the environment in which the bug is experienced, output from gdb showing the bugs occurrence, as well as source code and a Makefile to reproduce the bug. The problem occurs in gdb 6.8 but I have seen the same results with gdb 7.1

General :: Does The Backtrace Call Lost Memory

Oct 11, 2010

Here is a test code for memory alloc and free. It is to detect whether the allocs and frees match. From the result, after backtrace call, there is some memory alloc, but it does not free these memories after calling or the process exit. Why? Nomorlly, the memory alloced need to be freed after use, or the memory will leak. But I run this program for about some times, and find that though the system memory does not real leak,the free memory decreases, and the cache increases(Use free command).

Fedora Networking :: Network Manager Crashes After Upgrade (Backtrace)

May 29, 2011

I was running F15 for a month now. After this week's updates NetworkManager crashes at startup and throws a backtrace. During reading ifcfg-<wifi network name> it was throwing some assert() failed of some hash is not null, but just as a warning. Later it was dying while reading ifcfg-eth0.

I removed all the ifcfg-* files in /etc/NetworkManager and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
Then NetworkManager started but at the moment I used the gnome applet to connect to a network it crashed trowing a backtrace (I have no debuginfo installed).

Then I also deleted ifcfg-* in /etc/sysconfig/network/profiles/default and /etc/sysconfig/network/devices, now the NetworkManager does not crash anymore, but instead gnome applet crashes when I try to connect to a network. grrr...

As a result I am still unable to connect to any network. Why so many copies (hardlinks?) to these config scripts? Now it is even worse: I rebooted the system and at the boot time when NetworkManager starts the boot process freezes. It says in VPN the Get() method is not implemented. I am unable event to switch a console and to log in to put the config files back (getty not started?).

Debian Multimedia :: DE For Older Thinkpad T41?

Jul 21, 2010

I was wondering if anyone uses older laptops (for e.g., Centrino M) like Thinkpads from the T40-series.I am finding LXDE to be extremely buggy. There's been more than one occasion in which I've been totally surprised at weird 'events.' It's been so often that it annoys me now and I wish to switch DEs now.

I guess my choices are Gnome, KDE and xfce. I think KDE 4 will be too bloated so I guess that leaves Gnome and xfce. I also read that LXDE is actually a 'beta' (release?) even though LXDE versions are in 'release' form. I come across too many 'bugs' so I think the other desktops, even if it takes up a bit more resources, is a compromise I have to take.

Is xfce the best choice for an older laptop like mine? I thought LXDE sounded great and had great potential but the amount of bugs I find and the fact it looks like there's not much of a team developing and working on it, is disconcerting. Hopefully, things will improve but I don't want to work out or encounter 'bugs' on my laptop so often.

General :: Debian 507 Won't Load On Thinkpad T20?

Dec 28, 2010

I have an old laptop I bought for $20 & thought I'd install Linux & XP in a dual-boot. It couldn't handle the MINT installer, so I thought I'd go with Debian. XP was already on there, so I ran the Debian install CD (LXDE), set up the 2nd partition, and finished installation. It rebooted once, but since then will not load Debian.

I get the GRUB menu, pick the default (not single user), it runs through all the lines of text down to the block that says "starting gnome display manager gdm" & maybe 4 lines after that (which I can't read in time)... then the screen goes blank, there's a brief flicker, the CPU thinks a bunch, and then there's usually a low-pitched BOOP at which point the CPU stops thinking & the screen just stays blank. The power is still on, but nothing happens.

Anyway, I don't know if it has an ATI card or whatever (saw something online alluding to that being a problem.) I also don't know how to use the single user mode, or how to display error messages, or do anything useful in the command line. Haha... But I'm a novice programmer & "computer literate" outside of Linux, so I can learn.

The laptop has 128MB of memory (which functions perfectly according to MemTest 86), I think a 450MHz PIII processor, 20GB HD (split between XP and Linux), a dead battery, a slightly damaged Power Supply, damaged screen...

Debian :: Strange Link Gets Me To Different Sites?

Apr 19, 2010

Trying again here.. no-one on reddit seems to respond..It initially happened here (it was deleted, you can try the lower links.) Sometimes one, sometimes both of these links gets me to 'attack sites', it starts with both, then to one, and then neither does it. I am on Debian Lenny, Both Iceweasel 3.0.6-3(firefox), epiphany2.22.3-9, elinks0.11.4-3 and firefox 3.6.3 sometimes do this for me. It doesn't seem to happen if you enter it into the adress bar, but it does when you follow it by clicking.[URL]..Someone else reported it too, from XP w/ Firefox. The adress bar tells me it is subreddits.org the but the screen doesn't. (Worry my computer is compromised..)

Links it send me too, something on 89.248.174.24, orcug.com, thindx46td.xorg.pl and a whole range of varying other sites. http://i.imgur.com/d7ZGv.png So can you reproduce/any idea what this could be? I do worry about having some malware on firefox and such, also besides this, but as i said, it happens with other browsers. I have add-on flashblock, noscript, redditreveal, socialite, trackmenot, had tree style tab until i found it wasn't usefull enough. I also noticed that control+k gets me to bol.com (wtf is up with that??), and there was the random site you get to when you misclick.(Which i was able to disable.) I am gradually getting more and more pissed off and suspicious about firefox. (as on my computer.)

Firefox also seems start reading/writing from disk suddenly. (I use iotop when i think it shouldn't be writing sometimes.) Perhaps i should try set something up to record what writes to disk.

Debian :: Nvidia All Video Has Strange Hue Around Certain Elements

Nov 28, 2015

First impressions I really like Debian, been running a server with it for a while and just last week switched to it on my main workstation.

I have only had one problem with video. I have a Geforce 210 with 1gb (1024x768 resolution) of ram and the proprietary Nvidia drivers installed from a repo. Thing is, in all video whether flash in my browser or movies in vlc, mpv, and mplayer, I have these weird overlays that scan over the video, especially in scenes where the camera zooms in, long distance shots seem unaffected.

Also, almost every video I start whether flash or movie file, I get a flash of a green bar at the bottom of the screen very quickly and barley noticeable.

Now I know thats a rough description so I attached two screen shots (link at bottom of post), the affected area is circled in red on one, also I have attached a png of a similar image that may be more enlightening.

Notice the quality of the second screen shot, especially around Will Ferrell's head, and the greenish yellow line leading down his shoulder and arm. The general quality seems terrible. The film is in 720p and looks great in Mac.

I had the proprietary drivers installed in Slackware 14.1 and Mac OS 10.10.5(Nvidia Web Drivers) on this system, with this card and did not have this problem.

I'm in gnome latest version.

Debian Installation :: Squeeze 6.01 Thinkpad T520 Network?

Aug 10, 2011

I have a new Thinkpad T520 from work and am trying to put Debian 6 on it. I previously had a Thinkpad T42 and was able to install Debian 6. I recall having to find the driver and install it separately, so I downloaded all of the non-free drivers, but the network detection step doesn't seem to let me select my own driver.

I've been thru this at least 4 times, both the standard 6.01 and the AMD64 bit version, both behave the same. This has the (unfortunately) the Thinkpad b/g/n wireless card, but the wired ethernet is the Intel 82579LM gigabit. Seems there would be a driver with Debian 6 that would support that one.I can't stand running Windows 7.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze On Thinkpad R400 Laptop Getting Very Hot?

Apr 6, 2011

I have Lenovo Thinkpad R400 laptop. It has Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor with ATI Radeon 3400 series graphics card and Intel Mobility chipset series 4 Integrated graphics controller. I have Squeeze ( stable) installed on it with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 .

My laptop gets very hot within 10 minutes whether I do any task or not. Also battery life is almost 40% as compared to Windows. I am more worried about temperature as it remains completely cool in windows. Mostly CPU load remains around 10% and CPU spends 99.99% time at 800MHz clock. I believe heat generated is by graphics card chipset.

Debian Hardware :: Broken Brightness On Thinkpad X230

Oct 27, 2015

I have Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (model 23202TG) laptop. I can not control brightness via Fn-keys. Tested with default 3.16 kernel and 4.2.3 kernel from backports. After system startup brightness set to max and Fn-keys does not work but correctly detected by xev.Tried to add "acpi_backlight=vendor" to kernel boot parameters, as suggested at ThinkWiki but this does not work.

In the logs I found this messages
Code: Select allkernel: thinkpad_acpi: ThinkPad ACPI Extras v0.25
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: http://ibm-acpi.sf.net/
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: ThinkPad BIOS G2ETA4WW (2.64 ), EC unknown

kernel: thinkpad_acpi: This ThinkPad has standard ACPI backlight brightness control, supported by the ACPI video driver
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: Disabling thinkpad-acpi brightness events by default...

After some googling I tried to add acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" and acpi_backlight=native to grub kernel options but this also does not work. On other hand I can adjust brightness by echo-ing some value to sysfs.

Here is some information
