Debian Configuration :: Missing Policy Package - KDE Setup Several Programs Don't Work

Aug 1, 2011

I've got Debian Sid x64 on my machine. Problem is that in my KDE setup several programs don't work, namely System Load Viewer plasmoid, plasmoid with temperature info and update-notifier-kde. System Load Viewer always shows 0% RAM and swap usage, as well as no processors, temperature sensors plasmoid shows no sensors available even after I installed lm-sensors and run sensors-detect, update-notifier-kde doesn't show any notifications even if I run aptitude update manualy. I might be mistaken but it seems to me that these three programs are not working because of some common reason, most likely some policy package either missing or misconfigured, but I can't figure out what is it.

Debian Configuration :: DRI 3 Doesn't Work With IGP - Missing Packages?

Nov 20, 2015

So, as per Arch Linux's wiki, I tried to make some optimisations to the intel driver through setting it up in Xorg.conf (or as advised by that wiki article, in '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf' ), but I've ran into trouble enabling DRI3. Here's my current config file:

Code: Select allSection "Device"
   Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
   Driver      "intel"
   Option      "AccelMethod"  "SNA"
   Option      "DRI"    "3"
   Option      "TearFree"    "true"
EndSection

So far everything works fine, I haven't seen any noticeable tearing, nor did I had any problems with any graphics-intensive programs I run, but there's a slight problem with the DRI3 part as indicated by Xorg's logs:

Code: Select all[    26.556] (II) Loading sub module "dri2"
[    26.556] (II) LoadModule: "dri2"
[    26.556] (II) Module "dri2" already built-in
[    26.556] (==) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp
[    26.616] (II) intel(0): SNA initialized with Haswell (gen7.5, gt2) backend
[    26.616] (==) intel(0): Backing store enabled

[Code] ....

First of all it still mentions the DRI2 driver, is this supposed to happen, or did something go wrong? Also it complains that it cannot find a file, which I can't figure out which package it belongs to, and taking a quick search around the interwebs hasn't produced anything useful...

The IGP is the CPU, which is actually a i5-4460... which according to Wikipedia it has a HD Graphics 4600 GPU.

Debian Configuration :: Setting IPTables Default Forward Policy?

May 3, 2010

I'm intending to replace my current router (486DX2 w/16MB running FREESCO which has been faithfully working 24/7 for well over a decade) with a debian box with a bit more grunt and newer features. I'm currently setting up my iptables ruleset and am after a bit of advice re the FORWARD policy. A few example rulesets I have found set the default policy to DROP and the have two lines for each port forward, one to allow the traffic and one to direct the incoming packets to the correct machine.

iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 25 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.100.10:25
iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 25 -o eth0 -d 10.0.100.10 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW -j ACCEPT

I'm thinking of setting the default policy to ACCEPT to cut down on typing as my default INPUT policy is DROP and unless there is a valid FORWARD rule for a particular port, the packets aren't going anywhere anyway. Or have I misunderstood something. My googling returned heaps of example scripts & not much intelligent commentary. Alternatively, what do you all use to configure & maintain your debian gateways; hand rolled iptables rules, or any toolset recommendations?

I was trying to setup a cross-platform development environment with qt, an thus looked for the qt-sdk package I used to install on my 32-bit machine. This package appears to have been deleted from 64-bit ubuntu maverick, but I do not understand the details...

- Has this package been renamed, or is there another one in place of it?

- Is this package going to be available again in the future?

PS: I am aware that one can install the sdk by downloading the installer, but for unattended install I prefer the apt package...

Debian Configuration :: How To Best Manage Partitioning When Install Programs Not From Debian Repositories

Dec 4, 2010

How to best manage partitioning when install programs not from debian repositories?I just discovered that Debian installs applications not from repositories to /opt and /lib. Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application. What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.

Then I checked the output of the db to see what I did not have on my filesystem that db was searching for (according to the default policy when tripwire was installed), I then changed my default clear text policy file accordingly and used twadmin to generate a new tw.pol file.

Next I come grinding to a halt after this (assuming the next thing is to update the policy in tripwire right? )

When last month I installed debian squeeze I missed reiserfs (or did I miss noticing it?) Though Ext3 is giving me no trouble. I would love to have reiserfs. Is it now possible to change the filesystems without much trouble.

Debian Configuration :: Server Missing About 300mb Of Ram

Mar 15, 2010

I downloaded the most recent version of debian and isntalled it. Everything went really well there. Until i issued free -m on the box. It would appear that the server is missing about 300mb of ram which is okay for i figured perhaps the video card / sound was taking that amount of ram for it'self. it was not until i installed Xen and I found a bigger problem with memory and my system. for what ever reason when I attempt to create a domU with 512mb of ram, i need to add 19MB more ram so that when i issue free -m from within the domU it will show a total of 512. worse yet is that when i raise the total up to 1024 for 1gb or domU ram, i need to addd 28mb or ram. and add 28mb of ram PER GB i wish to add to the domU.

Debian Configuration :: Missing CD / DVD Device In Squeeze

Apr 3, 2010

I've been testing Squeeze to determine whether KDE4 is finally suitable for my primary machine. Everything seems to be working fine except for detection of IDE devices. My CD/DVD drive no longer automounts and the reason seems to be that no device is being created. My Lenny system detects the drive as /dev/hda, but no such device exists in Squeeze. During boot, Squeeze appears to detect the drive as /dev/sr0 (according to dmesg), but in fact that device does not exist either.I'm actually running the Lenny kernel, as I am unable to compile my Ralink wireless driver (rt2860sta) using the Squeeze kernel. Also, for inquiring minds, I use removable HDD drive bays on my systems to simplify testing.

Debian Configuration :: Pxe Setup On Lenny

Feb 27, 2010

i am trying to get a pxe server working on a debian so other clients can boot off it. the problem has two parts.

1. getting the pxe working. so far the tftp part doesnt work. the client says tftp error. so i guess the dhcp portion is working, but theres something wrong with the /var/lib/tftpboot or the deamon config itself.
2. the other issue is that in the shop many system's have non-working disk drives. also many of them do not have a usb boot option in the bios. all i need to do is get the "bare" kernel file or grub(?) to boot over pxe and give me the ability to boot from a usb flash drive and load the rest of the linux files from there. my primary intention is NOT netinstall. although it wouldnt hurt. my intention is running a linux live usb on systems without bios usb boot support. ive read somewhere that a full pxe live boot requires nfs setup. i am asking for that, just so i can boot from a flash drive.

Debian Configuration :: Using Shorewall To Setup NAT

I posted a previous topic on bridging, and that didn't seem to work, so I went with Shorewall and I'm trying to setup NAT, but I'm struggling very badly. I have the interfaces configured where eth1 is my Local LAN (loc) network, and eth0 connects to my ISP (net). But my problem is that I have no clue how to forward traffic from eth1 to eth0, without using ProxyARP, which routes all traffic to eth1, and doesn't allow traffic out on itself. I've looked at the NAT tutorials, and they don't make sense to me, because I have two interfaces that I want to be able to talk to each other and the internet at the same time. Is there anyone who's good with Shorewall?

Debian Configuration :: Missing Dependency For Headers-2.6.29 On Lenny?

So I want to run 2.6.29, but virtualbox is a bit of a problem because it requires linux-headers-2.6.29, but when I try to install the amd64 headers it tells me that it cannot install the dependency linux-kbuild-2.6.29.
