I'm having trouble to configure my debian (2.6.26-2-686) with some routing tuning. In fact, I have a VPN provider. I want my Squid Proxy use this VPN provider and I have to use policy routing because my ISP forbid IP spoofing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm intending to replace my current router (486DX2 w/16MB running FREESCO which has been faithfully working 24/7 for well over a decade) with a debian box with a bit more grunt and newer features. I'm currently setting up my iptables ruleset and am after a bit of advice re the FORWARD policy. A few example rulesets I have found set the default policy to DROP and the have two lines for each port forward, one to allow the traffic and one to direct the incoming packets to the correct machine.
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 25 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.100.10:25
iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 25 -o eth0 -d 10.0.100.10 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW -j ACCEPT
I'm thinking of setting the default policy to ACCEPT to cut down on typing as my default INPUT policy is DROP and unless there is a valid FORWARD rule for a particular port, the packets aren't going anywhere anyway. Or have I misunderstood something. My googling returned heaps of example scripts & not much intelligent commentary. Alternatively, what do you all use to configure & maintain your debian gateways; hand rolled iptables rules, or any toolset recommendations?
I've got Debian Sid x64 on my machine. Problem is that in my KDE setup several programs don't work, namely System Load Viewer plasmoid, plasmoid with temperature info and update-notifier-kde. System Load Viewer always shows 0% RAM and swap usage, as well as no processors, temperature sensors plasmoid shows no sensors available even after I installed lm-sensors and run sensors-detect, update-notifier-kde doesn't show any notifications even if I run aptitude update manualy. I might be mistaken but it seems to me that these three programs are not working because of some common reason, most likely some policy package either missing or misconfigured, but I can't figure out what is it.

I have just installed tripwire. I have created a baseline db using the default policy file. Then I checked the output of the db to see what I did not have on my filesystem that db was searching for (according to the default policy when tripwire was installed), I then changed my default clear text policy file accordingly and used twadmin to generate a new tw.pol file.
Next I come grinding to a halt after this (assuming the next thing is to update the policy in tripwire right? )

I just wanted to ask about official opinion or policy concerning newer versions of KDE. Is 4.6 still so buggy or unstable to be included in experimental? What steps are going to be made concerning KDE and what when? I don't like GNOME, KDE 3.5 is out of the game now in 6.0 and KDE 4.4 is IMHO all but mature and finished. So I am not sure what to do now, Kubuntu is buggy and don't like it but they have 4.6...

I am using my netbook with Squeeze when I travel. I recently started getting a msg "Network discovery service has been disabled" or something to that effect. And many websites have been blocked as well. I discovered that I could remove avahi-daemon to fix it and I have done so. Unfortunately, the websites are still blocked even though I no longer get the msg. I could not even post this msg here with Linux and had to boot with Windows to do it. It is a shame. Can someone please tell me how to unblock those websites.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI went to see if the iPhone was connected and it wasn't listed--and she was now on my wireless network, on the Internet. For the past month, I have experienced slow Internet (the Qwest people came over three times to fix the problem, to no avail.) And, when my laptop and desktop are turned off, the modem still shows activity, as if someone was downloading large files. Qwest insists that my network is secure and no one is using my network (and my house was built in 1997, so the wiring is fairly new and I have had NO issues with Internet/phone and had Qwest service longer than I can remember).
To make a long story short, I am concerned that my router has been hacked. I live in a rural area, so there's no teenagers or weird-o's around that I know of that would do that (unlike city/suburban areas)--and my Linksys router is "lying" to me, as my nephew was ON MY NETWORK and the SSID, MAC address and IP number was not listed on the LAN device list--only my laptop/desktop are listed, and she was happily checking emails on my network. I have changed my WPA2 password three times just in case, no fix.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had problems with the system not reading the monitor EDID and have fixed the problem by adding an override file in xorg.conf.d and all of that seems to be working well (although the system has not failed to read the EDID since I implemented the override. go figure).
The thing that I am wondering about is something I see in the Xorg log file. At the end of the log file, after everything seems to be configured, there are six (6) identical blocks of information regarding the EDID and modeline settings. Is this normal or is X stuck in some kind of loop? Everything is working and I am not waiting an inordinate amount of time to log on, or after. Just curious. Here is the log file.

Just upgraded to Debian Jessie. I'm having a problem with the desktop and lockscreen that I never had before in Debian 7. Whenever I open the laptop to wake it up, there is very bad discoloration of the background. (screenshot : [URL] ..... )
Hardware is an IBM Lenovo T410 with no customizations. The graphics are factory nvidia. 3D acceleration works flawlessly, and I have no other issues except this background problem.

Since I've installed Debian Squeeze, it freezes 2-3 times a day.
Usually the mouse pointer stops working and the screen remains unchanged, but sometimes it become white or distorted and the system halts.
Video is an older Ati 200m chipset (x300) with radeon driver and shared memory.
OS is Debian Squeeze x64
I've tried to modify xorg's settings. I've tried with and without KMS and compositing, different kernel, UXA/EXA/XAA acceleration, etc.
Maybe it was better with XAA, so the freezes reduced to an average of one per a day.
The version number of xserver-radeon-video-ati is 1:6.13.1-2-squeeze1.
The experimental repository has a little bit newer version of the radeon driver, but it depends on other xorg components, so it isn't simple to install and I don't know how to revert to testing/squeeze if I try to install it.
I have used debian in the past and I am pretty comfortable with it but I have been having an issue. My desktop has randomly frozen two times. All my applications are still running though. For example, I was still able to talk on skype with my friend. However, all I can do is move my mouse but I can not click on anything forcing me to restart. Here are some things that might be helpful:
-I was using compiz both times (I am assuming this might be why. however, I have used compiz on ubuntu and I have never had a problem)
-I use an ATI graphics card
-It froze the first time when I accidently tried to extract the skype install deb.
-It froze the second time when I pressed close in software sources
-Since I have installed debian, I have installed compiz, compiz effect packages, removed openoffice, installed opera, installed google chrome, installed flash, and installed skype.
Does anyone know why my desktop crashed?
As this was my first Debian installation with a 500gig drive, I chose to use the defaults. Debian announced that it was going to format the drive as EXT3, and commenced,I waited 3-4 minutes and only saw a very steady on disk active light. I presumed that the format should have ended sooner, and therefore, believing that the installer was in a loop, I rebooted and retried the installation again.
This time I let it run for the full duration, about 6-7 minutes (I also have a terabyte drive), for Debian, and after the longest time, the installer proceeded to the next step. The drive format was not in a loop. With todays large disks costing under $75.00 per terabyte, it makes sense to put a propellor or other indication on the text or graphic screen to show that the installer is really working at formatting. My screen showed an unchanging bargraph pegged at 31%.
