I downloaded the most recent version of debian and isntalled it. Everything went really well there. Until i issued free -m on the box. It would appear that the server is missing about 300mb of ram which is okay for i figured perhaps the video card / sound was taking that amount of ram for it'self. it was not until i installed Xen and I found a bigger problem with memory and my system. for what ever reason when I attempt to create a domU with 512mb of ram, i need to add 19MB more ram so that when i issue free -m from within the domU it will show a total of 512. worse yet is that when i raise the total up to 1024 for 1gb or domU ram, i need to addd 28mb or ram. and add 28mb of ram PER GB i wish to add to the domU.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been testing Squeeze to determine whether KDE4 is finally suitable for my primary machine. Everything seems to be working fine except for detection of IDE devices. My CD/DVD drive no longer automounts and the reason seems to be that no device is being created. My Lenny system detects the drive as /dev/hda, but no such device exists in Squeeze. During boot, Squeeze appears to detect the drive as /dev/sr0 (according to dmesg), but in fact that device does not exist either.I'm actually running the Lenny kernel, as I am unable to compile my Ralink wireless driver (rt2860sta) using the Squeeze kernel. Also, for inquiring minds, I use removable HDD drive bays on my systems to simplify testing.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo, as per Arch Linux's wiki, I tried to make some optimisations to the intel driver through setting it up in Xorg.conf (or as advised by that wiki article, in '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf' ), but I've ran into trouble enabling DRI3. Here's my current config file:
Code: Select allSection "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "SNA"
Option "DRI" "3"
Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection
So far everything works fine, I haven't seen any noticeable tearing, nor did I had any problems with any graphics-intensive programs I run, but there's a slight problem with the DRI3 part as indicated by Xorg's logs:
Code: Select all[ 26.556] (II) Loading sub module "dri2"
[ 26.556] (II) LoadModule: "dri2"
[ 26.556] (II) Module "dri2" already built-in
[ 26.556] (==) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp
[ 26.616] (II) intel(0): SNA initialized with Haswell (gen7.5, gt2) backend
[ 26.616] (==) intel(0): Backing store enabled
[Code] ....
First of all it still mentions the DRI2 driver, is this supposed to happen, or did something go wrong? Also it complains that it cannot find a file, which I can't figure out which package it belongs to, and taking a quick search around the interwebs hasn't produced anything useful...
The IGP is the CPU, which is actually a i5-4460... which according to Wikipedia it has a HD Graphics 4600 GPU.
I just upgraded my Debian stretch via apt-get and I noticed that the network manager is missing at least 2 icons: the mobile broadband icon and the settings icon. I haven't found any bug reports or other information about how to restore them. The icons were there after initial installation of version 8.2.0 from DVD.

Here's my problem: I'm running a Lenny laptop and I need both wifi and virtualbox to work. I had to do a kernel upgrade to run the wifi. It works with either the 2.6.29 or 2.6.30 kernels, but with 2.6.30 I'm having screen brightness issues that I can't seem to get rid of. So I want to run 2.6.29, but virtualbox is a bit of a problem because it requires linux-headers-2.6.29, but when I try to install the amd64 headers it tells me that it cannot install the dependency linux-kbuild-2.6.29. Is there any way I can get that dependency installed on my computer?

I am trying to upgrade the version of dovecot on a rarely-maintained Debian machine with which I almost never have problems (ain't Linux wonderful?). The current version is 1.0.rc15-2, and I think the latest version is 1.2 something, but the point is that I want to be able to use the pigeonhole sieve plugin. Anyway, when I try to "apt-get install dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d", it gets to this: Err [URL].. etch/main gnomemeeting 2.0.3-6 404 Not Found Failed to fetch [URL]..-6_all.deb 404 Not Found E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis may sound ridiculous, but after installing Debian 5 (from CD 1) in my laptop, ASUS UL80VT, it fails to detect the Ethernet device. The device is "Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Ethernet Controller". I guess the problem comes with the old kernel of version 5. I was intending to compile the latest kernel anyway. But the problem is is there any heads up i need to download the kernel and trying to compile it? Is there anyone who uses Debian on UL80VT. If there is, does it works okay?In short I want to compile the latest kernel, hoping it will fix the Ethernet device. There are installers available with the latest kernel. But I want to do it on my own.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got Debian Sid x64 on my machine. Problem is that in my KDE setup several programs don't work, namely System Load Viewer plasmoid, plasmoid with temperature info and update-notifier-kde. System Load Viewer always shows 0% RAM and swap usage, as well as no processors, temperature sensors plasmoid shows no sensors available even after I installed lm-sensors and run sensors-detect, update-notifier-kde doesn't show any notifications even if I run aptitude update manualy. I might be mistaken but it seems to me that these three programs are not working because of some common reason, most likely some policy package either missing or misconfigured, but I can't figure out what is it.
View 4 Replies View Relatedwhat the difference between the commands tracert and traceroute is? I need to run tracert as superuser, while traceroute is no problem in user mode.
Also, it appers like tracert is showing nodes completely different from traceroute:
Code:
sudo tracert google.nl
traceroute to google.nl (216.239.59.104), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1 192.168.1.254 (192.168.1.254) 1.078 ms 1.699 ms *
2 * * *
[Code]....
Another thing.. Is it correct to assume that hop 5 and 7 above are loadbalanced nodes? How should I interpret this result, is the traceroute initiating it's path three times? Otherwise it'd be rather strange as to display other addresses in the same node..

I am trying to see if something it aliased correctly but i cannot list all the names a system is know by.
I am sure its something simple I am missing with a switch.
I am not so experienced with networking in Linux. I've successfully installed Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.2 on a VMware host. When I issued nslookup command, it returns "connection timed out" error as follows:
Code:
[root@rac1 ~]# time nslookup rac1
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
real 0m15.038s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s
My questions are:
(1) Is that error normal?
(2) Is there a way to decrease the 15.038s value? rac1 is the local hostname, so why it takes all that time to resolve it.
Following info may help:
Code:

I'm trying to find a command to tell nslookup, "I want you to try to resolve hostname X using DNS server Y, and if the lookup fails, just output failure do NOT fail over to some other DNS server as a backup and use it to try to resolve the same hostname."I'm trying to follow the man page instructions for doing this, but it doesn't seem to work. The man page for nslookup on my system (CentOS 5.5) includes the line:
"[no]fail Try the next nameserver if a nameserver responds with SERVFAIL or a referral (nofail) or terminate query (fail) on such a response."But if I try using that option, the output seems to indicate that after the lookup failed on ns1.afraid.org, nslookup failed over to 208.67.220.220 (the first nameserver listed in my resolv.conf -- an OpenDNS nameserver) and used it to resolve the hostname instead.
